From Kevin Skarupa: In the Palm Beach Post in the Accent section there’s an column by By Thom Smith that mentions an intimate charity concert Jimmy will be doing at the Breakers in early April.
Buffett to sing in the sand at The Breakers
As I mentioned before, the student body at the Academy of the Palm Beaches claims some impressive bloodlines, including Jimmy Buffett, who will sing for son Delaney’s education, barefoot, in the sand, at The Breakers Beach Club on April 3. Tickets, which may be a little steep for Parrotheads, are $1,000. Call 832-8815.
It could be the most intimate show Jimmy does for a while. He’s playing four Florida arenas in mid-February, the closest being National Car Rental Center in Sunrise on Feb. 16. Otherwise, the rumor mill has him making a dramatic change — to stadiums. He’s one of the most successful acts on the road, but he wants to cut back and spend more time with family. Stadium venues would allow him to play fewer dates before larger crowds.
No doubt, Jimmy will be singing some tunes from his new album, Far Side of the World, which is now set for a March release. It originally was due out Oct. 23.
Buffett intimates who’ve heard the music say it’s his best record in years. The problem was outside. The cover art had him sitting atop a camel, cell phone in hand, head wrapped in a burnoose or towel and a bright light in the background. After 9-11, Jimmy said whoa. At first he even considered pulling a couple of songs — one mentions Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting — but ultimately he pulled the cover.
Meanwhile, on Dec. 1 Jimmy, with wife, Jane, got all dressed up — he even wore a tux — and went to Washington. At the Kennedy Center Honors, Buffett introduced honoree Jack Nicholson, talking of his passions — talent, music, art and politics, and then added: “Of course, there are the women. Most great women of our time have been passionate about Jack Nicholson.”
Back home last week, he sat down for dinner at Chez Jean-Pierre with an impressive group that included Breakers President and COO Paul Leone and wife, Kathy; Breakers marketing boss Dave Burke and wife, Amy; and Matt and Annette Lauer.
