Jimmy Buffett Day – Jacksonville Florida

Our PH club received this today from the City of Jacksonville —

WHEREAS: People have been drawn to the music of Jimmy Buffett for many years. And his fans banded together in 1989 to form Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc. The group chose “Party with a Purpose” as a motto to depict their love of Buffett’s music and a desire to make a positive impact on the world; and

WHEREAS: The Parrot Heads have supported environmental and charitable causes for many years. For example, in 2003, the group raised more then $1.6 million for local and national charities and contributed 365,068 man-hours in supporting them. And on a national level, the Parrot Heads contribute to the Alzheimers Associaition, Americare’s Foundation, Artificial Reefs of the Keys, CL Foundation for SIDS, Dolphin Research Center, Tommorows Childrens Fund, Welsley House and the Cancer Foundation; and

WHEREAS: Jimmy Buffett is the Chairman of the Save the Manatee Club, which he established in 1981 with Florida Governor Bob Graham. Buffett also founded Friends of Florida, an environmental group focused on preserving the Florida Ecostructure. And Buffett’s Singing for Change program has nationwide focus and provides grants that are concerned with the health, education, and protection of children and their families; and

WHEREAS: Locally, the Beaches A1A Parrot Head Club participates in the Adopt-A-Highway program and the annual Polar Parrot Plunge which raises money for the Sea Turtle Patrol. They also support the Alzheimers Association, Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry, and Planet Gumbo, which provides hope and sustenance to those in need.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOHN PEYTON, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Jacksonville, Florida do hereby proclaim December 11th, 2004, and all second Saturdays in December henceforth, as

JIMMY BUFFETT DAY

and urge citizens to join me in recognizing the Parrot Heads for the positive difference they are making in the country and community.
