Uncle Warren and Cousin Jimmy

June 28th, 2006 7:09 am       4 Comments »

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has an article that mentions the family ties (or lack of) between Jimmy and Warren: "All about Buffett — Warren, not Jimmy"

He is not believed to be related to musician Jimmy Buffett. But Warren’s sister, Doris, has tried for 20 years to find a genetic link. Jimmy calls him "Uncle Warren" and Warren calls him "Cousin Jimmy."

They did travel together in 1983 to Norfolk Island in the South Pacific, which has a large population of Buffetts, who are descendants of men who participated in the 1789 mutiny aboard the HMS Bounty.

And Cousin Jimmy wrote a 2003 song having to do with Uncle Warren. Part of the ditty goes, "I bought Berkshire way back when it was cheap. I bought Berkshire way back then and I do nothing but keep…it."

Berkshire Hathaway, a diversified company with major interests in GEICO, life insurance, annuities and jewelry, is Uncle Warren’s company. Subsidiaries include Fruit of the Loom, Dairy Queen, See’s Candies, Borsheim’s Fine Jewelry and World Book. Its 2005 net income was $8.5 billion.

Cousin Jimmy bought his first shares in 1989. As of Monday, the stock was selling at about $91,500 per share. The per-share price dropped $600 that day on news of Uncle Warren’s largess.

I’d like to thank Nancy (conched) for putting together a list of shows that Jimmy has played between 1985 to 1996. She was able to come up with the list of shows from some old copies of the Coconut Telegraph newsletter and a few old tour t-shirts. The Shows Database has been updated with these additional tour dates (even though the set list from the shows may not be available).

Here’s an unofficial list of the venues that Jimmy Buffett has performed the most shows at over the years (updated with shows played as of 6/26/06). With the two shows this coming August at the Tweeter Center Boston in Mansfield MA there will be a tie with the Merriweather Post Pavilion for the most shows performed with 44.

44 Shows - Merriweather Post Pavilion (Columbia, MD)
42 Shows - Great Woods / Tweeter Center Boston (Mansfield, MA)
40 Shows - Riverbend Music Center (Cincinnati, OH)
26 Shows - Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre / Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre (Irvine, CA)
25 Shows - Lakewood Amphitheatre / HiFi Buys Amphitheatre (Atlanta, GA)

21 Shows - Pine Knob Music Theatre / DTE Music Theatre (Clarkston, MI)

(this is an unofficial list and it has not been verified)

Jake’s Having a Ball!!!

June 17th, 2006 6:45 pm       13 Comments »

From an article in the San Francisco Chronicle: "Rocking Big Time on Little Ukulele"

Jake Shimabukuro is taking the ukulele to places that it’s never been before.

Just back from his first stint at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Shimabukuro was still buzzing from four nonstop days of making music. With his wiry build, tousled hair and impish smile, he looks younger than his 29 years.

"I got to sit in with a lot of Dixieland bands and I played with Jimmy Buffett in front of 120,000 people," Shimabukuro says, grinning at the memory. "I was so scared. I was only looking at Mac McAnally, the guitar player, or down at the ground. I played at the House of Blues with Keller Williams and I opened for the Radiators and then got to sit in with them. I also opened for Ivan Neville. Man, talk about the funk! We crammed three weeks of stuff into the four days we were in New Orleans."
