Radio Special on Parrothead Studies Course at UNCW

Be sure to tune in for a Time After Island Time radio special (produced by Paul Leslie & Jeff Pike). The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) offers one class you never got to take in college. Recently, I had the chance to visit UNCW to witness an honors course called Parrothead Studies. This is not a joke. The class studies the phenomenom of Jimmy Buffett fandom as a form of leisure studies…and that’s no oxymoron. This officially credited class has garnered a lot of attention from musicians, Parrot Heads, the founder of PHIP (Scott Nickerson), and of course Jimmy Buffett and so I had to see what it was all about.

It was certainly worth the trip, and I stuck around after class and got to interview the professors of the class for an article which appeared in Jimmy Buffett’s periodical, The Coconut Telegraph. Call them at 1-800-COCO-TEL Along with some music to get your neurons pumping, Professor Dan Johnson, PhD and Professor Candy Ashton,PhD…self-professing Parrot Heads themselves, reflect on the academic study of Parrot Heads. This will be a hoot, but we are afraid Alice Cooper was wrong… School is in fact, not out for summer.
