The Year of Still Here tour got back underway last night with a show at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, OH. Jimmy Buffett has performed at Riverbend forty one times since 1988.
The set list included a number of additions including:
- “Jamaica Farewell” last known live performance was was back on August 12th, 1990 in Wisconsin during the Jump Up Tour.
- “Take Another Road” was last played on February 20th, 2001 in Charlotte
- “The Ass And The Hole” last played on May 4th, 2001 in New Orleans, LA
- “What If The Hokey Pokey Is All It Really Is About?” was last played on October 5th, 2002 in Irvine, CA
Jimmy ended the show with a cover of John Prine’s “Paradise”. The last time Jimmy perfermed the song was back on June 18th, 2002 in Cincinnati, OH.
The Cincinnati Enquirer has a review of the show: “Parrotheads toast Buffett“

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has a great article on the Coral Reefer Band: “Buffett’s band will strike a ‘Coral’ chord at Alpine Valley” (thanks to Todd and CaptainP for passing that along)
What doesn’t often get recognized is the 11-piece band providing the soundtrack for the never-ending party.
What’s remarkable about the group of musicians that Buffett has chosen for his Coral Reefer Band is that it isn’t just a ragtag group of background musicians who will back Buffett for his sold-out show Saturday at Alpine Valley Music Theatre.
In fact, many people might be surprised to learn that the group that creates the live sound behind “Margaritaville” and “Fins” includes a Christian recording artist, a few Grammy-winning songwriters, a former member of Arrested Development, revered studio musicians who have appeared on records with Aretha Franklin, Kris Kristofferson and James Taylor, and an award-winning children’s recording artist.

The Cincinnati Enquirer has a couple of articles leading up to the show at Riverbend on Thursday: “Jump on the Buffett bandwagon – Examining the origins of the Parrothead species” and “Margaritaville makes money”
Some excerpts from the articles:
Jimmy Buffett brings his “The Year of Still Here” tour to Riverbend Thursday, representing the 20th anniversary of his first performance at the venue in 1988. This show is his 41st consecutive sell-out at Riverbend. This one sold all of the 20,000 tickets in 10 minutes. Make it his 47th consecutive sell-out in this market, if you count the six shows he did at Kings Island from 1984-87.
Buffett managed to turn a fantasy lifestyle into a marketable product, selling escapism for a night or so and he was on his way to being the Margaritaville mogul. Given his current sold-out summer tour, it is a “product” that never goes out of fashion. As Buffett sings, “I’m growing older, but not up.”
From beer to sneakers, it’s usually all about selling a lifestyle these days when it comes to marketing any consumer product. Jimmy Buffett practically wrote the book on that kind of marketing, or at least he wrote the song. Buffett has managed to turn a mythical beach bum lifestyle into a financial empire that reminds one of another financier named Buffett. That would be Warren, no relation.
Buffett has turned his musical fantasies into what is estimated to be a $400 million brand, making him one of the richest musicians in the world. Rolling Stone magazine estimated in 2006 Buffett was the seventh richest rock star, earning $44 million that year.

The Hollywood Reporter has an article that mentions Jimmy Buffett has partnered with Discovery Communications to create a video bringing attention to the plight of sharks that employs his song “Fins”: ““Planet Green Planet Green orders more ‘Greensburg’” (thanks to Scott for passing that along)

In an article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Kenny Chesney talks about getting inspiration from a Martin guitar that Jimmy Buffett gave him: “Songwriter Chesney’s perfect spot: ‘On my boat’”
When the Poets & Pirates Tour, which hits Turner Field on Sunday, wraps in September, Chesney will grab his Jimmy Buffett Signature Edition Martin guitar — a gift from Buffett himself — and seek songwriting inspiration aboard his boat in the near-translucent waters of the Virgin Islands.
While plans are already in the works for next year’s tour, Chesney has his sights set on that upcoming songwriting sabbatical, crafting material with that guitar given by equally notorious island aficionado Buffett.
Jimmy’s a great songwriter, so I’ll try to get whatever energy I can from it,” Chesney says with a laugh.

The Key West Citizen has an article “Attorney: Buffett didn’t coin phrase”
Jimmy Buffett didn’t coin the phrase “Coconut Telegraph” after all, an attorney for the singer/songwriter’s Margaritaville Enterprises now says.
Buffett attorney Jeffrey Smith wrote a letter Sunday to Denise Malefyt, whose Prestige Publishing produces the 8,000 circulation Conch Republic Coconut Telegraph, recanting an earlier statement.
“We sent you a letter on April 30, 2008, regarding your company’s violations of Margaritaville trademark rights. In that letter, we stated that Jimmy Buffett coined the phrase “coconut telegraph” in 1981. … Based on your feedback and our further investigation, this information appears to be incorrect. We are therefore retracting that statement.”

There’s a full page article outlining the responsibilities of Mike Ramos, Jimmy Buffett’s assistant and personal trainer in the August 2008 issue of Men’s Journal on page 40. It’s pretty cool, a few small pictures and quotes from Ramos. (thanks to chitownpirate and Amy for passing that along to us)

From Trent: The encore then came. Jack played a couple of his own songs by himself, then announced he had another friend in town he was going to invite out. It just happened to be Jimmy Buffett with G Love. All three of them together played “A Pirate Looks at Forty.”
