From the Denver Post: “Head trauma killed soldier in Buffett-song fight

A decorated Army Special Forces solider who was fatally injured in a New Year’s Day fight after playing one of his favorite Jimmy Buffett songs on a bar jukebox, died of severe head trauma, according to autopsy results released Tuesday.

Sgt. 1st Class Richard Lopez, 37, of Fayetteville, Ark., died Monday at Denver Health Medical Center.

Steamboat Springs police Capt. Joel Rae said Lopez was beaten by two patrons of the Steamboat Springs’ Tap House Sports Grill after he selected one of his favorite Jimmy Buffett songs, identified by Lopez’s family as “Margaritaville.”

Dear God! This is unacceptable. I wonder if Jimmy knows about this. Do we know what started the fight or why it continued? Do we know what set the other man off to get SO unreasonably upset? The reaction of this man is uncalled for he needs to be prosecuted for murder. I mean, really, the guy is a soldier which means he’s probably been to Iraq or Afghanistan where he was in more danger of being killed than in other places. Then, he’s home drinking in a bar doing what Parrotheads do and some guy KILLS him for it??? WTF????

  2. 2. catsway Says:

This event defies explanation or understanding…..

  3. 3. Anthony Says:

Read the related articles on the website of Denver Post. It will give you a full detailed description of the events.

  4. 4. Lola Says:

Now I know the world has gone insane!!! Sad!! I too hope the person responsible for this is prosecuted for murder! WTF!!!!!!

  5. 5. E. Teel Says:

Somehow, I don’t think the soldier was an ‘innocent victim.’ Yes, he suffered the consequences but there are two sides to this and only one side was reported. Keep in mind the bar saw fit to throw the soldier out.

  6. 6. todd beresford Says:

NO MATTER whos FAULT!!!….NO ONE DESERVES to DIE!

    R.I.P parrothead !

    todd (parrothead red)

  7. 7. crawfish Says:

why would Jimmy care? i have seen people over dosing at the tailgate parties, and taken away in ambulances 2 or 3 hrs. before the concert………..do you think Jimmy cares? well, maybe. another $40 t-shirt he won’t be able to peddle to some drunken parrothead!
my advice, stay out of bars!

  8. 8. Phitz1 Says:

Hey Crawfish, find a new site to hate. A man died here and you want to make it about indifferance, by a man who spends millions in charity. Sgt Lopez deserves more respect from you and all of us.

God bless him and his family, and all touched by this tradgedy. No one is smiling today!

  9. 9. todd beresford Says:

I AGREE!!!!….for someone who is Soooooo TIRED of JIMMY BUFFETT and his ways of LIFE and BUISNESS…HE sures SPENDS alot of TIME at BUFFETTNEWS!…….PARROTHEADS only !

  10. 10. crawfish Says:

    who spends millions ib charity?

  11. 11. crawfish Says:

oh boo hoo………………Jimmy could care less, thats the only point i was trying to make.

  12. 12. kevin Says:

I’m all for the death penalty! Eye for an Eye. A true American hero beaten to death over playing a classic American song…absolutely disgusting! Buffett should offer legal assistance to the family of Lopez to help them in any way possible.

  13. 13. Salty Sway Says:

Crawfish I’m sorry for you that you hate life so bad

  14. 14. crawfish Says:

well i’m sorry no one here lives in REALITY!
why would you think Jimmy would care?
do you think he is going to jump on his jet and
fly back from St Barts just because someone gets killed
in a bar fight? If a guy played a Bruce Springsteen song
would you expect Springsteen to run to the rescue?
    GET REAL!……………..GET A LIFE!

  15. 15. Salty Sway Says:

Phitz1 well said, R.I.P. Mr.Lopez and thank you very much for your service.

  16. 16. What's so funny 'bout peace, love, and understanding? Says:

C’mom, Crawfish!!! Go on back over to the Drudge Report or playing Warhammer or whatever video game it was you were playing and crank up the Sean Hannity or Anne Coulter, OK?

  17. 17. crawfish Says:

haha……………..we will see how fast Jimmy responds to this drunken american hero, stupid enough to fight in george bushe’s senseless war!

  18. 18. Cameron Says:

crawfish, no one expects Jimmy to hop on a private jet and fly to the funeral from St. Barts. But we all know for sure that he cares and sympathizes for the family. Can anyone help me out and remind Crawfish of the time in a recent Buffettnews when Jimmy personally called a kid…a kid who had recently suffered some sort of tragedy in his life….and when Jimmy asked if there was anything he could do, all the kid asked for was for Jimmy to leave his voicemail message for him. I think that’s pretty damn cool and decent of Jimmy. Doesn’t matter if this soldier was drunk or sober. It’s not like Jimmy hasn’t had his fair share of drinks at bars before. Thats not what this is about. Someone died. Someone who fought for this country (whether you agree with the war or not) got beat to death by not one but two guys in a bar. crawfish, if you don’t have anything decent to say on the matter in a forum full of people who love and admire Jimmy and his music and everyone who also admires both…than perhaps you should waste your time somewhere else.

  19. 19. crawfish Says:

well i’m entitled to MY opinion just like everyone else on here…………… just like i said, what do you expect Jimmy to do about it? Lay hands on the guy and bring him back from the dead? i think people need to QUIT worshiping Jimmy like he is God and start worshiping the ONE who died on the cross for all of mankind!
    just my opinion.

  20. 20. Salty Sway Says:

Crawfish we all understand that you are entitled to your own opinion but like we all said this site is for buffett fans not negative A_ _ _ _ _ _ _! please find a site where all people talk about is how much they hate people that have money and feel sorry for themselves PLEASE from all of us.

  21. 21. Crazyhair Says:

Wow, Crawfish you hit “pulverize” on the blender this time! Now to everyone else I am not defending Crawfish on this one at all, but there has to be more to it than someone going crazy because someone else played a song. The only thing that should matter is that someone is dead. Soilder or not, someone who was here is no longer. I’m sure JB has heard about this. What he does is his own business. Just like it would be Springsteen’s personal decision if it were one of his songs that was played.
After thinking about this for more than 5 minutes I have decided that “Mother” was right, IF YOU DON’T HAVE SOMETHING NICE TO SAY DON’T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL—ESPECIALLY ABOUT SOMEONE WHO IS DEAD, AND JB ON A WEBSITE FOR HIS FANS!!!!

  22. 22. crawfish Says:

truth is truth…..Jimmy promotes drunkeness. i’ve been to 61 Buffett concerts since 1975. Remember the “good ole days” when it was about the music, not marketing a bunch of crap, paying $150 per ticket to hear 27 songs…gonna kill ya Jimmy to play 30 songs per show?
Going to a Buffett show nowadays is like going to a war zone, being pissed, puked on and almost being run over by a bunch of drunks in the parking lot after the show is not my idea of fun anymore. Jimmy promotes drunkeness so if someone dies, thats too bad, but i’m sure the guy didn’t get killed over playing Margaritaville. Don’t blame me, i didn’t kill him!

  23. 23. mmcdon03 Says:

    crawfish,

I consider myself a realist. Buffett is a way to leave that reality for a short time and end enjoy a break from the stress of everyday life, for most. This seems like the wrong place for you to post. This is for folks who have not outlived the idea that people CAN be good and DO care for others (while enjoying a drink or two). Not sure if your wife left you for a Buffett tribute band player, or if you were ever able to hide your personality long enough to ever get married, eiither way, you’ve got some stuff todeal with before your opinion matters to the rest of us. Nothing I hate worse than a fight at a Buffett show, but I wish I know what you looked like. I be watchin’ for ya…

  24. 24. Crazyhair Says:

You still haven’t won me over but why did it take 22 posts for you to sound even remotely human?
You seem to have a problem with JB and what he and M-ville have become. The good ole days are always better then the present, or so they seem. I believe that things will never be as good as we think they were, but it is exciting to see what tomorrow brings.
Our son (9 years old) went to two concerts last year and had such a great time at both he still talks about them out of the blue. There are people at concerts who don’t know how to behave. Example: the mud-monsters in Boston on Saturday afternoon. However, everyone and I mean everyone we had contact with at both shows was great to our son. They may have only been on their best behavior for the short time they were around him but they still did it. He played the parking lot games (not all of them) and Mom got the jello shots. Our parking lot neighbors at one show told us they wanted to smoke but were going to wait until he wasnt around. So we let them know when we were going to check out the carnival and everyone was happy.
Sorry that Jimmy’s success makes YOU unhappy. I guess that doesn’t keep you away if you have paid $150 a ticket. How many shows are you planning on going to in ‘09?

  25. 25. crawfish Says:

Jimmy’s success doesn’t make me unhappy . the point is, WE all made him rich and its time for him to GIVE back to his fans. He can afford to do free concerts to give back to his fans. Or go feed the hungry in the caibbean………you know, the places that he sings about that he has profited from……………..no more paying shows for me!

  26. 26. Julia P. Smith Says:

Just read the blog from beginning to end………….it starts out with posts about Rich and as it continues ….it becomes a sparring match over ethics………….
Such is life………….The pain from the loss of this young man is horiffic……….
far reaching…………..and inane…………He had just returned from his 4th tour
in the “war” zone…on the 19th of December…………..He was critically
wounded during his 3rd tour……….but recovered……….only to come home and loose his life over a song that played …what 5 minutes???………..Rich served his country with pride and honor……………….He put his life on the line for us….over and over………………..even for those 2 guys that took his……….
    Such is life………………………

  27. 27. Crazyhair Says:

ugh, I give up. My sympathy goes out to the Lopez family on their loss.

  28. 28. crawfish Says:

he didn’t put his life on the line for me…………he went to fight a senseless war that George Bush created so Haliburton and Bechtel, who were big campaign contributors, could get big contracts. there were no wmd’s or terrorists in Iraq until “brainless Bush” invaded and lied to the American people, so don’t try to tell me that fighting in a fabricated war is protecting MY freedom!
Its a bummer the guy is dead, maybe he should have played an Elvis song!

  29. 29. Salty Sway Says:

Crawfish for the last time from all of us please find a site where you can talk with someone who hates everything like you do and someone that can relate to you because obviously we don’t, it’s a shame that you have to act like this on a topic for a man who was killed period regardless of a Buffett song or not let the soldier rest in peace and move on, it really is a shame that you get a rise out of this topic like this.

  30. 30. crawfish Says:

there are people killed every minute in the world.why is he so special? because he made the wrong selection on the jukebox?……….you arr the people full of hate!
i didn’t kill the guy, Buffett did!
just think if Jimmy would have never written Margaritavlle, this great american hero would be alive!

  31. 31. Salty Sway Says:

F-U Crawfish are you from a different country? you P.O.S get the hell out of here.

  32. 32. crawfish Says:

see………..you are the one that is hateful!
    may God help you all!

  33. 33. truefan Says:

AGAIN, since your so dense & hateful & can’t obviously see past your own miserable life, NO ONE HERE WANTS TO HEAR YOUR HATEFUL RANTINGS. This is a site for Real Parrotheads, which is obviously NOT you, so find a site where someone gives a s_ _ _ what u have 2 say! Glad u won’t b going 2 anymore shows. I have also been 2 many & never saw any trouble except from a few young punks who were there for all the wrong reasons. If u have seen such things, then maybe u ought 2 hang w/different people! Sounds like u have a guilty concious about something. Don’t take it out on Jimmy! Bad enough u give the rest of us real fans a bad name, but what kind of American r u? Not one anyone of us want 2 claim if u can’t even see the sacrifices our military men & women make for YOU! YOU sound like the kind of hateful person that used a song played by a soldier, as an excuse 2 take out their anger on our military. Agree with the war/politics or not, a real American supports our troops & their families 4 their sacrifices! God Bless America…& Jimmy for all he DOES giveback. You obviously don’t know much about what all he does, MR KNOW-IT-ALL! ONE of many examples…I was 2 a concert that all proceeds went 2 the Red Cross 2 help replenish funds after the hurrucanes! YOU need 2 not only get a life but get help 4 your unresolved anger, whatever its from! Don’t leave it here!

  34. 34. Cameron Says:

Uh….Crawfish, pretty sure Jimmy just played a couple FREE shows in the Caribbean. And the price of those seats you metioned are for people who want to sit like front row and its not like SO many other bands don’t charge that price too. When you are as big as Jimmy Buffett or so many other bands, the price to get a really good seat at a show HAS to be expensive. Christ, if the tickets were only 20 bucks, they’d be bought in a second and sold to the highest bidders…yea, thatd be fair. I mean, what the hell do you expect? Everyone’s gotta make a living. Imagine the mass hysteria that would be caused if Jimmy said, “okay….my concerts are free now”…..and for you to say something like JIMMY killed that soldier is so over the line…can’t even believe you’d go there. Just like other people have said, there clearly had to be other factors. I don’t think the guy got killed over a song, whether it had been a Buffett song or a song of someone who I don’t like. And Crawfish, maybe you should do some research before you start making accusations about Jimmy not giving back….ya retard.

  35. 35. crawfish Says:

Jimmy is doing free concerts in the caribbean?
you mean he didn’t fly home to be with the american hero’s family? If he wouldn’t have written Margaritaville, this guy would be alive now. Maybe Jimmy should GIVE his family the royalties from the song………he is a GIVER isn’t he?

  36. 36. settyp Says:

It’s okay crawfish….I’m sure somebody out there loves you. Family or friends that tell you what you want to hear so they don’t have to listen to the trite you’re spewing here. Just please don’t pout, it’s depressing. And as a wounded veteran, I can say with all certainty that NO ONE is fighting for YOUR freedom, thier fighting for people that actually matter. And, as a Parrothead, please find a hobby and give the rest of us a break.

  37. 37. crawfish Says:

oh boo hoo mr. wounded veteran, don’t brainwash me with your patriotic bullsh*t……i’m not buying it. I’m free and have been free for 54 years……….. no one fought for my freedom. you have been brainwashed by Bush and all the other neo-cons that there is a commi or terrorist under your bed………… you can buy it!
theres plenty of people who love me but only God’s love is the one that matters………..go fight your Iraq war!

  38. 38. settyp Says:

You truley are an ignorant POS.

  39. 39. crawfish Says:

not as ignorant as “rejects” that join the armed sevices!

  40. 40. StJoeSteve Says:

Crawfish, the man who was killed was serving in the armed forces that protect your right to make the comments above. If you do not agree with the governments policy take that up with your Congressman and not the men and women who follow orders to serve their country. There could be more to this story than is being released so far but the fact remains no matter who started the altercation a man is dead. A decorated soldier who risked it all for his country following orders is dead. I suspect you write what you do just to get a rise out of folks, that’s fine, sad but fine. This is my first post here and I hope I did not step out of line by responding this way. If I did I apologize to the Buffett fans and Patriots but not to crawfish. Jimmys music is an escape for me, a way to relax when things seem to be too much. I believe you (crawfish) should listen to a couple of your favorite Buffett songs before replying and maybye you would realize youre offending some genuinely friendly folks on this site. Thanks for reading this. StJoeSteve.

  41. 41. crawfish Says:

    another brainwashed one!

  42. 42. Karen Verdi Says:

I think we can all agree…..that going back and forth with this nonsense with crawfish is just insane!Lets all get back to doing just what we like… and thats listening to our favorite Buffet songs. Hoping for alot brighter days and many more concerts and the hope that all our military personal will someday soon be back and fortunate enough to join us!! Life is too short to bicker back and forth!!

  43. 43. crawfish Says:

yeah Karen………….tell em to quit picking on me!……lol!

  44. 44. Wowser Says:

Ditto to Karen. Let’s talk Buffet. I won’t miss a show at Alpine at whatever price. His shows are amazing.

  45. 45. crawfish Says:

    yeah you tell em Karen!………lol!

  46. 46. crawfish Says:

Gee Wowser, what kind of buffet do you want to talk about?………..chinese? italian?
you would think you “diehard” Peckerheads could spell
    BUFFETT right!

  47. 47. Salty Sway Says:

Crawfish do yourself some good rent a gun buy a bullet and put an end to your pain and suffering, quit being a dick

  48. 48. sandy beaches Says:

    Crawfish……thats Parrotheads!!!LOL

  49. 49. sandy beaches Says:

SSSOOOO…… regardless of the Carribean shows and Florida shows…can anyone give some great destinations for me to visit for some up coming Buffett shows? ( Ive also been to Jones Beach numerous times and cant imagine what is better than that) Any suggestions? Thanks,,,,,SB

  50. 50. sandy beaches Says:

hey Crawfish……didnt you say youve been to 61 of Jimmys concerts? Why sooooo negative??You know what hes all about and you know the music is great!! C’mon…chill out!!!!

  51. 51. Cameron Says:

Sandy Beaches….Ive been to a lot but the best have been at Great Woods in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Jimmy LOVES playing at Great Woods (now called Comcast Center, but Jimmy remains old school by calling it by its original and much better name) and has remarked several times (usually during Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes) that wherever he goes, people often ask what the parking lot is like at Great Woods. You wouldn’t be disappointed. A few years ago, Jimmy couldn’t play his Labour Day Weekend show at Great Woods because of some stupid golf tournament and had to move it to Gillette Stadium…which was good but definitely not the same. On that note, the golf tournament will be back next year around Labour Day weekend and we’re all gettin nervous it won’t be at Great Woods again. PLEASE BE AT GREAT WOODS!

  52. 52. sandy beaches Says:

Cameron…. thanks for the info.Lets all hope for the best and pray it is at Great Woods!!We are big Jones Beach fans!! The beach,,the sun,, the fans…the food.. the drink.. and of course all the Parrothead parafanalia you could ever wish or hope to see!!Not to mention the great music you hear from one car to the next!! LOL What a blast!!He usually makes it here in August sometime…but again, usually a late add on..so tickets are tough at times!!But anyway…well worth it!!
