OK, picture this – a 62-year-old man, slightly chubby, wearing a salmon-colored T-shirt and patterned board shorts. He is barefoot and balding.
Let’s say this man wants you to listen to him for 2½ hours as he tells the story of his life. Would you do it?
Around 18,000 did so Tuesday night in Charlotte, as tropical troubadour Jimmy Buffett cavorted around the stage at Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre like a kid who just saw the beach for the first time.
For a few hours Saturday night, the waves were kissing the shore and the palm trees were swaying in a soccer stadium in landlocked North Texas.
The eternal slacker-surfer-seadog Jimmy Buffett brought his Summerzcool Tour to Pizza Hut Park and allowed about 27,000 of his dedicated fans to get in touch with their inner parrots.
Fronting his 11-member Coral Reefer Band, the barefooted Buffett bounced around like a kid who had just tossed his text books and headed for the beach. His 2 ½-hour set concentrated on his classic songs while throwing in just a few less-expected numbers.
A video of Jimmy debuting the song “Summerzcool” at the Lakewood in Atlanta on April 16, 2009 is now available on YouTube. (thanks to SunLover for passing that along to us).
Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band performed on Saturday April 18th at the Pizza Hut Park in Frisco Texas (near Dallas).
The set list for the show is now available along with comments from those who listened to the show on Radio Margaritaville.
Some changes from the Atlanta show include the song “Fruitcakes”, and “Livingston Saturday Night” as one of the encores (last performed live by Jimmy over 14 years ago in Charleston SC on April 14th, 1995).
Jimmy Buffett kicked off his 2009 Summerzcool Tour Thursday night at sold-out show at Lakewood Amphitheatre.
The irreverent ambassador of carefree living played for more than 2 1/2 hours, included some surprises and showed no signs of slowing down more than 30 years after he recorded his first live album at the Fox Theatre.
Best line of the night: Buffett tells stories, cracks jokes and generally has a lot of fun on stage between songs. His best comment, to a very large and very loud crowd: “Thanks for coming out and refusing to participate in this recession. If you can’t have fun, what’s the point.”
He also gave a heartfelt shout out to his Atlanta fans. Buffett’s star really began to take off after he recorded “You had to be there,” a live album taped at the Fox Theatre and in Miami. “Thank you Atlanta,” Buffett said near the end of the show, “you were here long before many others.”

The second set began with some classics including “My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink And I Don’t Love Jesus” (Mac with Jimmy on ukulele), “I Heard I Was In Town”, and “Last Mango In Paris”. Jimmy then did the new song “I Feel Like Goin’ Surfin’ In A Hurricane” which he said was co-written with Will Kimbrough. Other songs included “A Lot To Drink About”, “Coast Of Carolina” and Jesse Winchester’s “Rhumba Man”.
Encores included “We Are The People Our Parents Warned Us About”, “Yellow Submarine” (Beatles cover), and Jimmy finished the show with “He Went To Paris” (for Bob Dylan)
Ross, who has been searching for investors to become minority owners in the team, may unveil some of the names of the people involved on that front.
The source said Thursday afternoon that Ross has been speaking to several people in the entertainment industry. Singer Jimmy Buffett, a Key West resident, and Miami Sound Machine founder Emilio Estefan are among the entertainment people Ross has discussed including in his ownership group.
It is not known if Ross has signed letters of intent or has closed the sale of minority portions of the team with Buffett or Estefan.
But the new owner, who made his fortune as a commercial real estate developer, is expected to make the Dolphins game day experience and business side seem “glitzier,” according to a source at HK Management, which represents Buffett.

“I’m really excited about it,” said Jimmy Buffett, from his Green Tomato Van, his vegetable oil-powered, environmentally-sound means of transportation. “This year I’ve written quite a few new songs over the winter. I wrote them to play on tour, and not necessarily for an album, but now we may put them on a record later this year. The songs cover everything from the festivals in the desert in Timbuktu, to the recession, to the optimistic outlook on the other side.”
