Jul 06

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band performed on Sunday night at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London England. It was Buffett’s first appearance in London since September 15, 1997 when he appeared at the Montserrat Benefit Show, and a brief appearance with Jack Johnson in 2008.

The set list along with comments are now available.

The set list included some changes from recent shows including “Piece of Work”, “Why Don’t We Get Drunk …”, and “Werewolves of London”. Jimmy ended the show with and acoustic version of “He Went to Paris”.
(thanks to Brenda for passing along the photos and the set list)

Superb concert Jimmy ! Got home at 2am after our 500 mile round trip ! The 5 of us (3 generations of the family!) were just blown away ! Still pulling strands of grass skirt out of the car this morning and clearing up coconut bras and flowery leis ! Think our family nearly had as many photos taken as you did ! Thanks to all for the cheer we got as we walked into O’Neills !! Come back next year Jimmy !

Going back a few years a drinking buddy of mine said to me in a bar, “Who sings Margaritaville”? I didn’t know, so we called a muso friend who was skiing in Andorra who told us “Jimmy Buffett”.
After this revelation, my buddy then carried on to become one of the biggest Buffett fans in the UK. He & his Lady have been to several gigs in the USA now. Twice to Vegas, telling tales of 2 day tailgate parties & more. We have gradually been introduced to more than just the one song from Jimmy.
When I was told that Jimmy was going to be performing at The Empire, I had to get a couple of tickets, Over the interceding years my wife has heard more than enough Jimmy Buffett songs for a Motown Fan at my buddies house while sinking some sundowners around the pool. On this occasion she decided to decline the live event.
This left an opening for the muso buddy who stepped in somewhat unsurely to bring the tale full circle with us all singing Margaritaville from the level 2 balcony, along with a few other songs that we knew a few words of. We had a great time.
As the muso friend said “The music doesn’t rock as much as some, but the feeling is good”. What a culture.
Thanks to the ladies at the rear right of the level for the use of their fan & the seat while they fetched drinks. We enjoyed your friendliness & hope you both had as much fun as we did.
Thanks everyone for the garlands & beads, It was in keeping at the gig but we did get a few strange looks on the trains home. I think it had something to do with Gay Pride being on in London that wekend. Hey, who gives a damn.
Here’s to the next time. Maybe I’ll make it to Vegas one day.

Wow! we love you Jimmy and yes, please come back next year! I first started listening to JB in the late 70’s when my father started listening. Went to my first concert in ‘87, then another in ‘88. Had to wait till last night for the next, long time between drinks!

Thank you so much Jimmy for coming to London we love you! I still can’t believe you played in London last night, I had to pinch myself this morning to make sure it was true.

I’ve been a fan for 10yrs since I spent 3mths touring the USA, and was introduced to Jimmy’s music by an American friend. Last year we went to Madison Square Gardens to see you, and we were over the moon we’d actually seen you in concert.

Thank you so much for signing my cd and tickets after the show, and taking time to talk to us, that really meant so much! I hope we didn’t appear like stalkers lol. We just couldn’t believe you were here.

We saw Madonna in concert the night before and she was breath taking but you, well you totally blew us away!

Please come back to see us next year!

Great show. Great Venue. Perhaps you haven’t heard but Buffett News actually got a shout out during the show — at the start of “A Lot to Drink About” he said something like (I’m paraphrasing): you may have heard things aren’t going to well in the US. Here’s another Summerzcool lesson for you. If any of this doesn’t make sense to you, I’m happy to explain it to you later — just post your questions to Buffett News.

Also important to note that he said twice that he would be coming back to London next year.

I’m afraid I have to disagree with the claim that this was his”first appearance in London since September 15, 1997″ — you’ll of course remember he made a surprise appearance in Hyde Park as a guest of Jack Johnson last summer. You’re write-up here: http://www.buffettnews.com/2008/07/03/8989/

…Well I’ve died and gone to heaven! We travelled from Dublin and Galway to see JB on Sunday, having seen excellent shows from both the Eagles and James Taylor last week…..but Jimmy blew us away.It was great to meet Parrotheads from Austria / Sweden / Germany / Australia and Telford, as well as the spoilt rotten fans from the USA! Heres hoping that we all get to do it again in London next year, and on the beach in Galway in gale force winds and horizontal rain in summer 2011. Summerz are always cool in Ireland….but the beer is great!!

What a truly wonderful end to a great weekend. We’d already booked to go to Goodwood for the Festival of Speed on Friday and Saturday so it seemed to be some kind of fate that Jimmy played London the very next day, whilst we were already in the South of the country. Big thank you to Danny Baker for mentioning the gig otherwise we’d have been none the wiser and would have missed it. Such a pity he didn’t make it.
I have to say this was without doubt one of the greatest gigs I’ve ever been to and definately the nicest crowd. We were in the standing section next to the lovely couple who’d taken their two adorable little girls with them. I hope they had as much fun as we did. I may not have seen much but I didn’t care. I was having too much of a good time.
I’m still on a high 5 days later and have listened to nothing but my JB CDs since we got back.
Glad to hear we’re not the only nutters to have built our own Margaritaville, Gary. :) And Jimmy, I’m holding you to your promise to come back next year. You’re definately worth the trip down from the Wirral.
