From AL.com: “Jimmy Buffett concert postponed to July 11 because of Tropical Storm Alex

The highly anticipated Jimmy Buffett concert has been postponed until July 11 because of concerns about Tropical Storm Alex, city officials told the Press-Register this afternoon.

The free concert was set to be simulcast on the CMT network, featuring native son Buffett and a cast of friends and special guests. The show was an attempt to boost tourism and spirits in light of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The news came suddenly and with little warning.

As of lunchtime today, the Gulf Shores City Council was holding a special meeting to discuss plans for the show and a crane was lifting parts of the stage into place.

Another news article from PNJ.com: “Oil spill: Buffett concert postponed

“I was told that the concert for July 1 was canceled because of a concern over storm surge, and the 30 people we were looking to place would not be needed,” Wilson said.

Kaiser Realty, a prominent vacation realty company in Gulf Shores, posted a notice to its www.seegulfshores.com website Monday afternoon that the concert was being postponed.

“Because the Jimmy Buffett & Friends Concert is being held directly on the beach, the current full moon creating high tides (3-4 foot seas today and 5-6 foot seas Wednesday and possibly Thursday as well), along with the storm in the Gulf creating higher seas, the concert has been postponed,” the statement on the website read.

From the Pensacola Business Journal: “Margaritaville Hotel opens on beach“. View photos from the opening here.

The Margaritaville Beach Hotel is open after a weekend of showing off for the developer’s family and friends.

Construction on the hotel at 165 Fort Pickens Road, former site of the Holiday Inn, started two years ago.

“It’s been a challenge, but anything can be done,” said Joe McCay, general manager.

The hotel is owned by Little Sabine Inc., whose chairwoman, Marilyn Hess, signed a franchise agreement with Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville two months ago.

The seven-story hotel has 162 rooms, some with Gulf-front views, plus two levels of underground parking. Rates are seasonal, ranging from $200 to $400 a night.

The Frank and Lola Loves Pensacola Café seats about 60 people inside and another 60 people on the veranda. Construction on an outdoor pavilion is scheduled to start next week and construction of a less-formal eatery, Margaritaville Café, is scheduled to begin in September.

From ABC News: “Hopes Fade for Quick Restart on Harrah’s Casino

A sign still welcomes passers-by to the future site of Margaritaville Casino & Resort in Biloxi, but most people agree the project doesn’t have a chance of getting built any time soon.

“Odds that this project gets built in the next five to 10 years are slim to none,” said Joel Simkins, senior vice president of Macquarie Capital USA.

When announced in 2007, Margaritaville — a joint venture of Harrah’s Entertainment and entertainer Jimmy Buffett — was expected to cost more than $700 million and open by spring 2010.

The Margaritaville brand, associated with Buffett, could attract a wider customer base than typical for existing casinos, Martin said.

“We’re hopeful the project will get back on track. We’ve been through a lot; and we’re still going through a lot,” Martin said of tourism on the coast, whose latest challenge is the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

If Harrah’s does go ahead with the casino, it will not have start from scratch with the regulatory process, said Allen Godfrey, deputy director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission.

The commission views the project as temporarily suspended, he said.

From WKRG.com: “eBay Promises To Remove Jimmy Buffett Tickets

All 35,000 free tickets for Jimmy Buffet’s Gulf Coast Relief Concert were gone in less than ten minutes.

Thousands of disappointed fans flooded Ticketmaster.com and Ticketmaster outlets only to find out the tickets were already gone.

Within minutes, the free tickets started showing up on eBay and Craig’s List for hundreds of dollars.

Free tickets to Jimmy Buffett’s Gulf Coast Relief Concert will be removed from eBay, according to a statement released by the company.

“While eBay in many cases allows the listing of event tickets that are initially distributed for free, we did not feel that the resale of free tickets to the Gulf Coast benefit concert was appropriate or consistent with the charitable spirit of the event,” the company said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the company said eBay is in the process of removing existing ticket listings from the website, and they have put “measures in place to try to capture new listings from going live.”

Today Mark Castlow, owner of Dragonfly Boatworks in Vero Beach, announced that BP has put a stop to their efforts.

Dragonfly Boatworks was scheduled to launch their 2nd of four S.W.A.T.( Shallow Water Attention Terminal) boats for use by the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Tickets will be available starting on Wednesday June 23rd for Jimmy Buffett’s free concert from the beach in Gulf Shores, Ala. Tickets will be available via www.CMT.com, Ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster outlets starting at 10 a.m. CDT on Wednesday.

The concert will feature performances by Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band, Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown, Allen Toussaint, Sonny Landreth, Jesse Winchester and additional special guests.

A statement from concert organizers listed a four-ticket limit, and tickets are required for entry. Concert organizers plan to distribute as many as 35,000 tickets to the event.

However, Ticketmaster.com listings for the concert indicate a six-ticket limit. Ticketmaster.com also indicates that gates will open at 3 p.m. for a 5 p.m. show, so those in attendance apparently will get more show than those watching from home.

For those unable to make it to the show, performances will be simulcast live on Radio Margaritaville, available on Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio, and streamed live on www.CMT.com. CMT also plans to rebroadcast the concert several times throughout the Independence Day holiday weekend.

In a statement released by concert organizers, Buffett said, “there are always welcome breaks in every storm but the unfortunate reality is that this disaster is not going away for a while — but a few hours of fun, void of the constant reminders of the situation, is a good thing and that is basically what I do.”

“CMT Presents Jimmy Buffett & Friends: Live From the Gulf Coast” is scheduled to broadcast live nationwide on CMT from 7 to 8:30 p.m. July 1 on the public beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Encore rebroadcast on July 2 at 6 p.m., July 3 at 8:30 a.m., July 4 at 1 p.m. and July 5 at 10:30 a.m. Excerpts and artist interviews will be available at CMT.com.
