Update: The Boston Globe has a review of the show “Strumming his six-string, Buffett ushers in summertime fun

Jimmy Buffett comes around these parts every year, usually in synch with the start of summer. His timing surely is intentional. Even in dreary weather, he brings with him the season’s standbys: flip-flops, Hawaiian shirts and skirts, and, most of all, an escapist attitude that happiness is just a beach and drink away.

New England, with its devout nation of Parrotheads, holds a special place in Buffett’s heart. Last night at the Comcast Center — Buffett still affectionately calls it Great Woods — was a reminder that no matter how often Buffett plays, it’s no longer just a concert: It’s an event (and it repeats tomorrow night).

From PalmBeachDailyNews.com: “Jimmy Buffett home buyer is billionaire neighbor Jon Stryker

The billionaire next door, Jon Stryker, purchased Jane and Jimmy Buffett’s 540 S. Ocean Blvd. house.

The $18.5 million transaction took place without real estate broker involvement, according to a source close to the Buffetts who confirmed Stryker as the buyer of the property.

On the deed, filed in the Palm Beach County Courthouse on June 3, the buyer is listed as Via Marina LLC, a Delaware company with offices in New York City.

The source, who has handled real-estate transactions for the Buffetts for many years, said Stryker had insisted on keeping his identity confidential from the time the deal was initiated earlier this year.

Margaritaville.com has posted a news article on Jimmy’s vision to distribute used cooking oil to commercial fishermen to use as fuel for their boats: “Jimmy’s Grease Experiment” (the full article is at GardenandGun.com)

Jimmy Buffett has a vision for his golden years. “My dream,” explains the musician, “is to get a big ole tanker truck, with huge holding capacity, and drive it up and down the Eastern seaboard collecting used cooking oil.” This from a man who’s built a mini-empire of concert tours, best sellers, and restaurants, and who could probably rest on his laurels somewhere besides the cab of a semi. “I want to collect all that used grease and distribute it to commercial fishermen along the coast to use as fuel for their boats.”

Buffett’s food-centric epiphany came from a green tomato. Actually, the Green Tomato, his giant green surf van converted to run on used cooking oil, a process that is actually relatively simple compared with using biodiesel. The van is hard to miss, and driving around the United States in search of swells, Buffett found himself acting like an ambassador for the grease engine movement. “I felt like a teacher because I was giving lectures everywhere I went about the benefits of burning grease,” he says.

The first Margaritaville Beach Hotel is set to open on July 1st, 2010. The second Margaritaville Beach Hotel will open in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and the third is planned for Hollywood in South Florida.

From Pensacola Business Journal: “Beach hotel projected to open July 1

The much-anticipated opening of Jimmy Buffett’s first Margaritaville Beach Hotel is set for the first of July, said Jim Wiseman, the singer-songwriter’s development partner.

The Pensacola Beach Gulf-front hotel, developed by Marilyn Hess’ Little Sabine Inc., plans to start taking reservations June 17.

“July 1 looks good for an opening,” Wiseman said. “We want to make sure we’re open for July 4 weekend.”

The $50 million, 162-room hotel is the first of three planned for the franchise, Wiseman said.

Wiseman is working on development of a second Margaritaville Beach Hotel in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and the third planned for Hollywood in South Florida.

Buffett’s original plans were to open the first hotel in Hollywood, but changed his mind after a rapid-fire round of negotiations with Hess this spring.

The deal with Buffett was struck after Hess fell out with Indigo, a boutique brand developed by IMG, parent company of Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and Intercontinental franchises.

The Boston Globe has an interview “Changes in attitude – Jimmy Buffett stops strummin’ hi six-string long enough to get serious” (by Steve Morse). A surprise announcement by Jimmy that he plans on releasing an acoustic version of the whole “One Particular Harbour’’ album (recorded this year in Tahiti)

Q. You have the public image of a free-for-all party guy and surfer, but weren’t you just down in Haiti helping out earthquake victims? And you’re going down to the Gulf Coast to lend a hand; what are your thoughts on the oil spill?

A. You have to figure out what to do instead of just bitching about it. One thing is that we have partnered with a little boat company and we’re building these small skimmer boats that can go into shallow water and actually help with the cleanup. Having grown up on the Gulf Coast, I don’t do this for headlines, but just because I want to give back. . . . We’re about to open our [Margaritaville Hotel] in Pensacola Beach, which is right at ground zero. We had a job fair there for 40 jobs — and 1,000 people showed up.

Q. You also just put out the double-CD “Encores,’’ taken from the acoustic encores you’ve done the last two years. It gave you a way to revisit some of your more obscure tunes and to show your roots by covering songs by Jesse Winchester, John Prine, and Bob Dylan.

A. On tour we have a 17-piece band that works people into a frenzy, but as big as this thing has gotten, I never want to forget being a folk singer, because that’s what I grew out of. I want to keep the roots alive of just me and a guitar since I spent so many years doing that. By ending the shows that way feels like a nightcap. It feels good.

Q. One of the songs is Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind,’’ pulled from your Newport Folk Festival appearance a couple of years ago. Would you play Newport again?

A. Yes, I loved it. I loved the surroundings. I would do it again.

Q. Any other recording projects?

A. Twenty years ago I ran away to Tahiti and wrote the song “One Particular Harbour.’’ I went back to Tahiti not long ago and did an acoustic version of the whole “One Particular Harbour’’ album in a bar called Bloody Mary’s where I first played — it fits about 80 people. So we’ll put that out.
