The Sun Herald has an article on the stalled Biloxi Margaritaville Casino project: “Holloway shows impatience with idle casino”
Mayor A.J. Holloway said Wednesday he has little hope that Harrah’s Entertainment will finish building the Margaritaville Casino on the beach and he thinks Harrah’s may demolish what is on the site.
“I think Margaritaville is through — at that location,” Holloway said during Breakfast with the Mayor, sponsored by the Biloxi Chamber of Commerce at the Donal Snyder Community Center.
Last week, he talked with John Payne, the central division president of Harrah’s Entertainment, who told him the company is not in negotiations with any investors, Holloway said.
The mayor said he is frustrated when he reads that Harrah’s is buying properties when the project in Biloxi has remained idle since 2008.

August 2nd, 2010 at 8:20 pmRegardless of Mr. Buffett’s intentions, Harrah’s is nearly criminally negligible for their neglect of the project in Biloxi. It is nothing less than shameful that the $1b project was scaled back to a $400k project and then put on hold indefinitely. Harrah’s has lots of money to spend in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and elsewhere, but not a penny to realize their very real commitments to Biloxi and the Coast. Shame on them!

August 13th, 2010 at 11:49 amWhat most of the previous commenters do not realize is that Jimmy and Harrah’s did not just promise to build a Margaritaville at the site. They had begun construction on it and then halted construction. Most the local residents’ anger is not so much that the project will not be completed but that the uncompleted work sits like a storm-ravaged building on the beachfront. We have plenty of those already and don’t need anymore of them.

December 16th, 2010 at 12:35 pmBiloxi should take a lesson from Arlington, TX.
When Arlington wanted to build Cowboys Stadium, the city took over the land through emminent domain and then sold the land to Jerry Jones.

The mayor of Biloxi should condemn the Harrah’s property, take it back through the use of emminent domain and then repurpose it to another builder who can complete the build under their brand.

January 4th, 2011 at 8:56 pmI drive past the eye sore skeleton of that mess every day on my way to work. I personally resent Jimmy Buffet and Harrahs for abandoning that project and leaving us with something that looks like Hurricane Katrina wreckage. Jimmy should be ashamed for turning his back on his famly and neighbors he grew up with. Biloxi gave him his start in music. How quickly he has forgotten. But you can go to Gulf Shores Alabama and the Margaritaville resort was completed. Imagine how that makes us feel.
I also resent the fact that the Mayor of Biloxi hasn’t done anything to force them to either tear it down (including the old Casino Magic Resort) or finish what they started. That area used to be Casino Row – the hot spot of Biloxi. The Gulf Coast has suffered so much devastation from Katrina and loss of revenue due to the oil leak, the least they could do is demolish it and restore the beach to its natural state. At least we could enjoy the view of Deer Island.

January 11th, 2011 at 10:35 pmI am also a resident of Biloxi and cant agree more about the resentment that is felt over the eyesore this project has left us with. Fine, they don’t want to build the project. Let Jimmy off all you want about about knowing when to fold, but how can someone who claims to love the coast be ok with the mess this project has made of our beach? I would very much like to see the site condemned and seized if the projects owners are unwilling to develop or restore the site.
