HOSPITAL ward chief and The Daily Telegraph columnist Dr Gordian Fulde was in the house when singer Buffett fell off a Sydney stage. This is his story: “How I helped save folk rock legend Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy was really happy and communicating with the audience. He had done several encores and was the only one on stage and all the lights were on him.

The audience was standing up and Jimmy walked over to shake one of the audience member’s hands.

Because Jimmy couldn’t see the end of the stage he went straight over. It was a terrible noise. A dull thud.

You just knew it was bad. Watching it, it was like in slow motion because the show was all over, everybody was signing out mentally and physically.

Jimmy fell so horribly and I saw the angle and what he hit. I thought he might have had spinal injuries.

The reflexes kicked in and I went over to the fence and told security who I was, even though I didn’t look like a doctor dressed in shorts, a tank top and sandals.

This all happened in seconds. I jumped the fence and got to him the moment after he landed.

No matter how many patients you have seen it is still a shock when you have this crumpled human being, blood pouring out, they are white as a sheet, they are totally limp and you just don’t know what is wrong with them, what injuries they have.

The difficulty I had was it was a very small space and I didn’t want to straighten him out in case he had neck or spinal injuries.

Jimmy was crumpled up so he couldn’t breath properly, but he had a strong heart beat.

Behind me, I couldn’t really hear the crowd.

I heard a gasp of despair because anyone who saw it knew it had to be bad.

He was bleeding profusely from a very bad cut to his scalp. After a while, he started to wake up but was dazed.

Jimmy Buffett has left the hospital where he was treated today after suffering injuries from an onstage fall at a Syndey, Australia concert.

A local news station in Sydney has an interview with the head of emergency at St Vincent’s Hospital, Gordian Fulde. He attended the concert and was in the front row. He was there in seconds to treat him. He also rode in the ambulance to hospital with him.

From the interview: He’s okay only unconscious a minute or two. This doctor was straight there. Nasty cut on his head and some minor ones elsewhere. CAT scans and neck, they were worried about his head. He has recovered well, needs a fair amount of convalescence. Discharged today. Advised to go in to cotton balls (for the cut), and to be sensible and rest.

From The Daily Telegraph “Singer Jimmy Buffett falls off the stage in Sydney, taken to hospital

AFTER singing “It’s been a lovely cruise, I’m sorry it’s ended” singer Jimmy Buffett crashed off the stage after his final Sydney concert last night and was rushed to hospital with a head injury.

Shocked fans at the sell-out concert at the Hordern Pavilion were urged to leave the auditorium by Buffett’s Australian tour manager Michael Chugg as the 64-year-old entertainer lay on the floor in front of the first row of seating waiting for paramedics and an ambulance to arrive.

He was rushed to Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital, in Darlinghurst, thirty minutes after the accident.

Neither Chugg nor his assistant David Pope would comment on Buffett’s condition at the scene but an audience member said it appeared the entertainer had struck his head and was bleeding as he lay on the floor.

Chugg took the stage and insisted anxious fans leave immediately with security hustling the audience outside before the ambulance arrived.

Several fans said they felt that some statement could have been made about Buffett’s condition before they were pushed outside.

After Buffett fell it appeared as if security men were arguing with a large man who had been at the front of the audience.

Audience member Dan Bateman, 30, told The Daily Telegraph Buffett fell face first off the stage.

“We were in the 10th row and it looked like he did a massive face plant after his encore and pretty much didn’t get up,” Mr Bateman, from Cairns, said.

“We were told to leave the premises. No one really wanted to leave because everyone was anxious to know if he survived the fall. Everyone was pretty horrified.”

His last show was full of references to Australia and Australia Day, and, after apologising for not appearing in the country for 20 years, he said he and his Coral Reefer Band would return in 2012.

The Daily Telegraph has a review of the show: “Jimmy Buffett performs live at Sydney Opera House

Right from the moment Buffett and his red-hot 9 piece band kicked things off with a sweet version of Van Morrison’s Brown Eyed Girl, this packed audience – some of whom had travelled from Antarctica – were on their feet, singing along to Buffet’s easy-listening and substantial back catalogue.

With 40 years of songs to choose from, Buffett chose to showcase several members of his band, particularly Robert Greenidge, one of the best steel drum players in the world, and Nashville musician of the year, Mac McAnally.

As promised, he also gave his song list an Australiana touch, punching out a crowd-pleasing version of Crowded House’s Weather with You. “I am a big fan of the Brothers Finn,” Buffett confided.

And while some ageing rock stars try to cover up their age, Buffett wants to celebrate turning the ripe old age of 64, turning the Beatles’ tune into a moment of sheer island delight.
