Blogger Phill Marder makes a good argument for Jimmy Buffett being in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Read the post at Goldmine Magazine.

Jimmy Buffett? Is he Rock & Roll? Those dedicated to putting everything into a category would probably say “No, he’s country” or “No, he’s folk” or “No, he’s Calypso.” Well, it doesn’t matter what you call him, because Jimmy Buffett is one of the Rock Era’s biggest superstars, has been for what seems to be ages, and his music stands for everything Rock & Roll should be.

His lyrics, often biting, humorous or both, speak for themselves. His concerts, resemble large, very large, parties. And what could be more Rock & Roll than his band’s name – The Coral Reefers? His fans – the Parrotheads – outnumber the population of many countries.

From the Palm Beach Daily News “Buffett joins Chesney for Everglades Foundation

Country superstar Kenny Chesney was at the Everglades Foundation’s bash at The Breakers on Friday night. Then, halfway into his set, he’s joined by Palm Beach rez Jimmy Buffett, who joined in on a few numbers. Buffett was at the top of his form, showing not even a bruise from the nasty tumble in Australia that landed him in the hospital.

Update: A photo gallery is available at The Palm Beach Post

Chesney’s friend and Foundation Board member Jimmy Buffet joined Chesney on stage for Chesney’s “Back Where I Come From” and one of Buffett’s signature songs, “Come Monday.” Mac McAnally joined Chesney on “Down The Road.”

On performing at the benefit Chesney said, “I was honored that Jimmy (Buffett) asked me to be a part of the Everglades Foundation Benefit. Restoring and protecting future damage to the Everglades is very important to me. Hopefully this helped bring some attention to a very important cause.”

From BestOfNewOrleans.com: “Jazz Fest 2011 poster unveiled” Art4Now, which produces the annual posters for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, this morning unveiled the poster for Jazz Fest 2011: an image of a young Jimmy Buffett busking on a French Quarter street corner with a sign that says “Will Play for Gumbo”(an allusion to Buffett’s song “I Will Play for Gumbo”). The poster was painted by Garland Robinette, the WWL-AM radio host and longtime painter:

He pictures Jimmy at the corner he worked as night melted to dawn, with the musician’s trusty Falcon parked nearby, and after his weekend gig filled his cigar box. Flying in the distance is a parrot, prefiguring Buffett’s ultimate destination of Key West, Fla. And if you look closely on the sidewalk behind the Falcon, you’ll see the contemporary Jimmy Buffett walking into the future, glancing over his shoulder at the young man who would eventually catapult him to international acclaim. Robinette’s glorious image is heightened by this allegory, spanning and compressing time in an image richly imagined right down to the old N.O.P.S.I. manhole cover in the street.

Update: A video of the artist Garland Robinette talking about the paint is available at WWL.com

Today’s Arlo and Janis comic strip has a reference to Buffett’s recent fall from the stage (thanks to Jon for passing that along to us)

It has been ten years since Jimmy Buffett was asked to be moved from his courtside seat in a game between the Miami Heat and the New York Knicks (February 4th, 2001).

The New York Post reports on the events of the incident in the article: “Singer Fouls out of Knicks Game”: First, Eddie Jones missed a pair of free throws in the final minute of regulation. Next, Bruce Bowen missed the first of two free throws that could have tied the game in overtime. Then Knick Marcus Camby grabbed an offensive rebound of a missed shot by Latrell Sprewell. It was too much for Buffett, who jumped to his feet and exploded in an X-rated tirade.

“This is bulls—” Buffett, 54, screamed, along with other choice words. NBA ref Joe Forte wasn’t pleased – and quickly signaled cops to move Buffett, a Heat season-ticket holder who lives in Palm Beach, to an isolated area. Buffett – who was with his 6-year-old son, Cameron – refused to budge and argued heatedly with cops, causing a five-minute delay in the game. He finally agreed to go, and was escorted to a tunnel known as “the Vomitorium,” used by players to get to the locker rooms.

From the Sun Hearald: “Planning Commission unanimously votes in favor of Margaritaville casino

Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Casino and Restaurant made a splash with the Biloxi Planning Commission on Thursday, when the 14 members present unanimously approved the plans complete with a Volcano Bar.

“That’s part of the entertainment that’s proposed,” said Michael Cavanaugh, attorney for the developers.

The Volcano Bar is based on Buffett’s song, “Volcano,” and is similar to the new bars at Margaritaville restaurants in Las Vegas, Orlando, Cancun and Jamaica. The volcano erupts each hour, filling giant blenders below with green margaritas. Cavanaugh said swimsuit-clad entertainers slide down the volcano and into the blenders.

He said financing is in place for the $48 million, 68,000-square-foot resort, which would be the first Margaritaville Casino. Developers hope to open by the end of the year on the Back Bay at Fifth Street.
