An article at InsideNova.com mentions the new policy to crack down on tailgating: “No more tailgating at Jiffy Lube Live“. According to the policy there will be no tailgating at the show on August 27th at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, VA.
Spokespeople for Jiffy Lube and its owner Live Nation didn’t return phones and emails late this week. But Prince William County police confirm that the Bristow concert venue is cracking down on partying in the parking lot. No pop-up tents, no portable grills and absolutely no alcohol.
There has always been a rule against drinking in the parking lot. But now the outdoor amphitheater is adopting a “no tolerance” policy when it comes to drinking and tailgating.
Fans, particularly “Parrotheads” who flock to Jimmy Buffett shows, have flooded Jiffy Lube Live’s Facebook page with complaints. They’ve even started a Facebook page of their own called “Boycott Jiffy Lube Live Tailgating Policy.”

Well, now we know why there is only i show at Bristow. OK, alchol maybe understandable, no grills??????????? When was the last time a tailgating grill caused any issues. Looks like “prepackaging” of adult beverages will be needed i.e. premixed drinks etc. I would love to know what the big deal is, yes a lot of parties and drinking but how many problems have this caused? Vast majority of the folks stop drinking an a few hours before the show to clean up and get ready for show. Are they going to stop selling booze inside the gates? Are they going to open parking lots later. What a bunch of absolute BS. As a P/O attending all shows at Bristow for many years i can only wish other multi thousand people crowds were as orderly!
May 15th, 2011 at 1:02 pm
Well, I think this is the stupidest thing ever, and the easiest way to let the owners know that you agree is not to attend shows there. If no one buys tickets to any shows then perhaps they will change their policy. Just saying that you are not going to attend will not get their attention. There are some very valid points raised in the above comment, one of the biggest being that tailgaiting prior to the concert allows folks to party prior to the show and perhaps a little during and then be able to depart the grounds safely without concern of driving impaired. If the owners are concerned more about loosing profits from food and alcohol during the show, then perhaps they should move concession stands outside the pavilion.

“When was the last time a tailgating grill caused any issues.”
A grill exploded in the Greatwoods parking lot in 2005 injuring 3 concert goers. However the idea of absolutely no tailgating is ridiculous.
May 15th, 2011 at 1:55 pm
This is ridiculous. While not aimed at parrotheads, this is an end of an era where responsible adults could go, phlock among others they do not see but annually and enjoy a cheeseburger and yes, a beer. Where were all these concerned owners 4 years ago and it was 115 degrees in the parking lot and they confiscated my unopened gallon of water at the gate? How about dehydration then? I am ready to sell my 3 club tickets and take the money elsewhere and enjoy it.
May 15th, 2011 at 2:18 pm
Phuck’em. There’s plenty of other shows on the east coast.
May 15th, 2011 at 2:51 pm
I believe this is the same situation for VA Beach. Is this a crackdown by the state of Virginia? I’d be curious to see if a similar rule applies for VA Tech or UVA football. Or, is this something that Live Nation is choosing to do at their venues?
May 15th, 2011 at 6:35 pm
{A grill exploded in the Greatwoods parking lot in 2005 injuring 3 concert goers. However the idea of absolutely no tailgating is ridiculous.}
That was because two idiots poured gasoline into the grill to get it started.

As I recall it was a gas grill that the two idiots were trying to get started, and 3 people ended up injured
May 15th, 2011 at 8:09 pm
Looks like we will be heading to Va Beach or somewhere else..The “Party in the parking lot” is a ritual for us. We and most all of the other Parrotheads I know, are very, very, safe and always clean up after ourselves…
HOW CAN THEY DO THIS TO US ????
May 16th, 2011 at 6:13 am
does this mean no 3 P’s?
no pissing ,puking and passing out before the show?
l AM depressed!

is there any chance Buffett will boycott liffy lube live this year and play another venue instead?
May 16th, 2011 at 4:27 pm
That would piss me off !!!. We always see BUFFET in Bridgeview IL and they open the parking lot up at 9:00 a.m. for Parrotheads. Last year they opened the gates at 8:00 a.m. and told us to “Get the party started”! Tailgating is a huge part of his concerts. I’ve heard he has refused to play at someplaces because they wont allow tailgating. Good Luck and Fins Up!
May 16th, 2011 at 4:57 pm
It’s always been against the laws in virginia, just never enforced before. Enforcement at college football games comes and goes.
May 16th, 2011 at 7:44 pm
This is most un-pleasant, we have been going to see Buffett here for years. every year they say no tailgating but we have never had a problem. It is probably the communist-wealth of Virgina doing its thing. We still plan on going hpefully they wont be stupid about people wanting to have fun and blow some time before the show.
May 16th, 2011 at 9:16 pm
sounds like a “left wing” conspiracy to me!
how dare they make us pay $160 per ticket to just
go listen to the music……. those basturds!
May 17th, 2011 at 9:09 am
Their policy is being further defined in bits and pieces…I’ve been to Buffett at Nissan (JLL) each year since 98…missing a couple while in Hawaii (but he played the Shell)…nonetheless, they intend to open the lot 1.5 hours before the show and the gates 1 hour before the show. They’ve hired additional officers to hand out trespassing warnings…when you park your vehicle you’ll be asked to proceed directly to the gate…no grills, games, pop up tents, chairs, anything associated with tailgating.
There have been 4 (thought it was 5) fatalities after shows there in the last 2 years and they’re trying to put up the facade of “public safety”. The reality is that they’re likely hoping to see a boost in sales INSIDE the venue while giving tha appearance of giving a damn. They’re certainly not going to stop selling booze inside…at 13 bucks a pop.
On their Facebook site they posted a FAQ because “we’re getting a lot of questions about the ‘no tailgating’ policy statement” on recently purchased tickets. The FAQ was recieved poorly as JLL inextricably linked “tailgating” with “drinking”…and the other, obvious arguments like cutting time to get parked by 2/3rds, still selling booze etc. etc. They repeatedly cited Virginia Law and took a “our hands are tied” and “public saftey” stance…
I’m going to Philly this year for the show…it’ll be my 6 year old’s 5th show and the 1.5 year old’s first. The oldest LOVES the tailgating… It’s an EXPERIENCE… got a wave and point from JB himself as the bus pulled in last year…
While I feel for those who have no other options to see the show, and I live within 2 miles of the place, I’d LOVE to see the show get cancelled…no “We Are The People” video clips from Nissan this year…
screw ‘em.

BostonHerald.com – Local/ Regional News: Buffett fans hurt in gas grill explosion
Three fans tailgating outside the Tweeter Center’s Jimmy Buffett concert dumped gasoline on a grill, causing an explosion that sent them to the hospital, a fire official said.
The fans were among hundreds in the parking lot outside the concert venue when the explosion happened, Fire Lt. Richard Fiske said.
One news report said the fans had trouble starting a grill and dumped gasoline on it in an attempt to light a fire. The gas caused an explosion that injured all three, WHDH-TV Ch. 7 reported.
Fiske said the victims were taken to a “level one trauma unit” at Rhode Island Hospital following the 2:45 p.m. explosion.
Police and fire officials did not release the victims’ names, hometowns or the seriousness of their injuries.
Buffett’s annual summertime show at the Tweeter Center went ahead despite the explosion, Fiske said.
May 17th, 2011 at 11:55 am
The concerts have not been the same since Jiffy Lube took over from Nissan. I’ll be sure to get my oil changes elsewhere. Just sayin’.
Wish this was disclosed before we PAID for our tickets. And if they want us to spend $$$ inside, they better figure a way to move the lines – - you know they can’t handle the numbers.
May 17th, 2011 at 12:46 pm
There will be no tailgating in VA Beach either – the venue can apply for a waiver but Live Nation did not do so. I guess it is safer for people to party at home and drive to show after having a couple of drinks – rather than having a couple of drinks in the parking lot…First show in Va Beach in years and probably the last for a while again…
May 17th, 2011 at 1:45 pm
I have been to JLL/Nissan every year since Jimmy started playing there. I have now spent the last of thousands of dollars at that venue. The parking has always been awful and the traffic worse. This latest move seals the deal for me. Here’s some irony for you. Last year the Landshark Lager golf cart drove by my spot to deliver it’s wares to a tent a few down from us. They were followed within seconds by a couple Prince William’s finest to shut the party down. I can only hope Jimmy does the right thing and removes JLL from his tour. It’s not the no beer, it’s not the no grilling, it’s not the no dining canopy to keep me from suffering heat stroke, it’s not the no visiting with friends before the show – it’s all of it. Pity.
May 17th, 2011 at 5:39 pm
are you kidding me? Jimmy loves this! Its in his contract he gets ALL profits from liquor sold at the venues.how do you think he makes a million dollars per show?
May 17th, 2011 at 5:39 pm
Well we decided to boycott dipstick (Jiffy Lube) so we asked for a refund. We did get the refunded, sorry Jimmy… : ( We take my mother-in-law every year, she 86 by the way, and she loves the concert. We look forward to grilling ou, walking in the lot and checking everyone before the concert because that was as much entertainment as the concert it self. We will miss it….
May 17th, 2011 at 6:35 pm
And just what beer was the main brew last year at the JB concert? Landshark Were there any lines during the concert, no? How about that 15 minute mid-show break, none. So, JB’s Landshark was the main brew on tap yet no lines and very slow sales. Could this be an attempt to boost the Lnadshark sale sinside the gaes? Just saying, JB left Merriweather Post in Columbia, MD due to no tailgating but that was prior to his own brand being a main sponsor.
May 17th, 2011 at 7:45 pm
Jimmy is laughing ALL the way to da bank on this one….hehe!………..i love it!
May 17th, 2011 at 11:05 pm
All I can say is if you love Jimmy and his music isn`t that enough?Isn`t that the reason you go?OK it`s fun tailgating and drinking and grilling before his concert but isn`t the reason for you going to his concert is to See and Listen To Jimmy and The Coral Reefers?
May 17th, 2011 at 11:09 pm
crawfishy & dfb281: there’s one problem with the conspiracy theory and that is they are applying the rules enforcement to all shows. if this applied only to the Buffett show i think you could make a strong argument that something nefarious was happening. however, we are hearing that people attending the country music festival this weekend will be asked to enter the venue immediately after parking. no picnics, games, socializing of any type in the lots. no, this is all LN & PWC police choosing selective enforcement of the law. for crying out loud, PWC police have a base ON JLL property.
May 18th, 2011 at 12:11 am
If You Love Jimmy and his Band isn`t that enough?Aren`t you going to his concert for his songs and songwriting? You do know Jimmy said on 60 Minutes Get a Life
May 18th, 2011 at 7:06 am
conspiracy theory?………….is Glenn Beck in the room?
May 18th, 2011 at 9:15 am
Many of us spend hundreds if not thousands and prepare for a year for this concert I’m just not sure what they are thinking here. Va beach same policy.
I urge JB and the boys to cancel the shows i’n VA unless the policy is reversed
May 18th, 2011 at 2:16 pm
Va. Beach has had the same policy since that venue opened 15 years ago. A lot of people think that’s why JB skipped it for 11 years. Other than seeing Buffett at Merriweather Post, that was the quietest parking lot I’ve ever been in.
At least the JLL policy IS across the board. WMZQFest is this weekend and alot of the folks going to that are spun up about this as well.
May 19th, 2011 at 11:19 am
I wish Jimmy would cancel his concert and move it to merriweather. Merriweather allows you to tailgate again. You can have grills and drink as long as its in a cup. Cops come by if they think your underage they will ask for ID. If your of age they go on there way. It happens to me every year and Im 31 but look really young. I went VA Beach once. There was no tailgating going on and I have never gone back. That was in 2000. It was a Dave Matthews Concert.
May 19th, 2011 at 11:33 am
I love Jimmy’s music and have for a while now. The tailgating is great, becuase it give you a chance to catch up. None of us have ever gotten drunk and driven home. We went for the fun, and Jimmy’s show that capped off a great day. We live 2hrs away. No way am I going to drive 2 hrs, deal with the traffic getting in, rush to make it to my seats before the show starts, then deal with the traffic getting out and driving another two hours home. Sounds like a backyard tailgate with the gang and some Radio Margaritaville this year.
May 19th, 2011 at 4:02 pm
WHO CARES ! It’s sad to see the good times end, but it wasn’t going to last forever. JB only has a few years left to tour. Truth is too many stupid drunks are to blame… you know the ones that passout, start fights, leave all their trash for someone else to clean up. I’ve been to 19 shows, and I tailgate with the best of them, but life goes on. My thought is we should be able to tailgate, but just open the gates a couple hours before the show, and no grilling. …to me that’s a compromise. I will surely miss the good old days, but I’ll still make it to every show until Jimmy says he’s done. I’m a PH and always will be, it’s the music that keeps me coming back.
May 19th, 2011 at 6:46 pm
Yep, understand about the music, but the whole idea is “a state of mind” having fun tailgating is all part of the state of mind. The concert has always been a relaxing way to spend a whole day, now stress to get into park lot, rush to get pushed through the gates, hurry to your seats, listen to the show, run to your car to get out of the parking lot, sit and wait to get out of parking lot, sit in traffic after out of parking lot. Sounds like one hell of a time to me. I’d rather be waterboarded! Sorry JB but thats the way it will be. BTW, why have we not heard from Jimmy, cant tell me he has not heard of the changes. We stand behind him, know stand with us!
May 20th, 2011 at 7:16 am
@Lindsay- have you ever been to a JB show? Part of the actual show is footage of the tailgating festival prior to said show.
May 20th, 2011 at 1:35 pm
Got my tickets to Jiffy Lube Pavillion for Jimmy Buffett and I will attend this year just to see how bad it’s going to be. I will bring my tailgating supplies with me just in case there is a change of heart by the owners. Don’t think it will happen though.
If they’re so concerned about drunk driving, then why are they selling alcohol inside the pavillion? I believe that the main reason for this is to boost sales of their consessions. To bad because I hate paying $10 for a cup of watered down beer.
I remember in the past you always had to avoid the parking lot Nazis riding around the lot on their bicycles. And they weren’t nice either, real storm troopers they were. Got in a few arguments with them over the years.
JIMMY PLEASE FIND ANOTHER VENUE!!!

ithink WE SHOULD FLOOD LIVE NATION WITH OUR CONCERNS- not just JLL.
May 21st, 2011 at 12:30 am
@Karen Yes I`ve been to a Jimmy Concert in Boston and I agree with you it`s so much fun Tailgating and Partying but if the Venue won`t Allow it don`t let it stop you from enjoying Jimmy and The Reefers @Greg That 10 Dollar Crap Watered Down Beer is probably LandShark Lager. To Karen and Greg and all you thousands lucky enough to have tickets Go to the Show and Revel in Jimmy`s World,Fins Up

VA Beach has not said there will be such draconian rules as Jiffy Lube. They have said their lots will open at 4:30, and that tents and small grills will be permitted, but no alcohol. Doors open at 6pm.
FYI, beers are not $10 at JLL – they’re $13. But it’s all about the safety, right? For me, the show itself was part of the sober-up-before-driving-home plan.
May 24th, 2011 at 6:52 pm
Hint: bring in a flask of rum; have at it…
May 25th, 2011 at 12:34 pm
@Lindsay – I have to be drunk to revel in the show…and I”M MADE AS HELL AND I”M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!! …just kidding.

For all you ParrotHeads – Yesterday I called Jimmy Buffett’s Management company (see info below) and left a very calm, respectful message about how disappointed his fans in the Bristow, VA area are that JLL and Live Nation have instituted the policy. The woman on the phone was very respectful. She took my name and phone number and said she would give “HK” the message. I encourage you all to also call and RESPECTFULLY voice your displeasure. I believe HK Management are truly “The Good Guys” who will hopefully weigh in on the issue and have the policy reversed.

This problem may solve itself for the Buffett show. I remember quite a few years back they tried to not open the parking lot gates unitl 2-3 hours before the show, but the traffic was backed up so bad that it was total gridlock in the middle of the day and they had to open the lots up. Traffic on I-66 was backed up to Fairfax and they figured out real fast that was not a good thing to try! I’m going to go early as usual and hopefully I’ll add to the insane traffic that can be expected! If they do indeed hold to this policy then I think J.B. should say what he did at King’s Dominion when he found out they didn’t sell beer anymore – “I’m never coming back here”

Had Jiffy Lube Live told me there was no tailgating before I bought tickets that would have been more acceptable. The fact that they sell tickets and then change policy on tailgating ought to be unacceptable. …and it will be to me. I vow never to go to Jiffy Lube Live again. I am willing to travel elsewhere to see Jimmy Buffett in the future.
August 4th, 2011 at 8:00 am
It is very upsetting that people have died as a result of drunk driving after concerts at Nissan in the last couple of years. But what I have read, 2 of the victims were underage, one was with a 21 year old driving and crashed after the concert and was killed. The other purchased Four Loco at a convience store drank it, was released into the custody of his mother prior to the show, stopped on the way home, got out of the car and sat in the middle of a road and was struck by a car and killed. The other two victiims were unfortunately killed by a drunk driver after a Buffett concert. I have been to Buffett every year since the venue was opened and depending on how this year’s concert goes it most likely will be my last.
August 25th, 2011 at 10:36 pm
I am 65 years old and have attended many Buffet concerts and we always tailgate. That is part of the fun. This will be the last concert in Va. I will attend.
If I could sell my tickets I would not attend this concert. Hope the storm breaks
the bank. We may get a refund if Jimmy has any say in the matter.

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do a little research about this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more from this post. I am very glad to see such excellent information being shared freely out there.
