How Paul Alexander Nolan wound up in Escape to Margaritaville

From the NY Post: “How a pale Canadian opera-lover wound up in Margaritaville

Two weeks after being cast in “Escape to Margaritaville,” Paul Alexander Nolan found himself singing in a bar in the Florida Keys.

And although he’d already played in five other Broadway shows, he says nothing was more nerve-wracking than harmonizing with a barefoot Jimmy Buffett at Islamorada’s Green Turtle Inn before a hundred invited guests.

“Everybody was talking, laughing and singing along,” Nolan tells The Post. “I thought, ‘How rude!’ But that’s what Jimmy’s used to — and that’s what he loves.”

“When I take a show, I never expect to be rewarded for it,” he says. “We’re just privileged to be on Broadway. Any time you get to work here, it’s like being struck by lightning, but in a good way!”

Through it all, he says, Buffett’s led the way, even showing him how to play certain chords on the guitar. And the singer’s fans, that slap-happy crew known as the Parrotheads, seem happy to hear their idol’s music sung by someone else, Nolan says. Several recently came straight from a tailgating party into the Marquis Theatre bearing a giant, blow-up monkey, which the stage manager promptly confiscated.
