The fate of the long-anticipated Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort is in peril because of problems obtaining financing, but the city and the developer say they’re optimistic the money will come through.

Developer Lon Tabatchnik is supposed to have financing in place by Tuesday but has yet to raise the $126 million needed for the 17-story, 349-room Jimmy Buffett-themed resort.

But Tabatchnik, city officals say, has received commitments to date from only 26 Chinese investors, which would raise $13 million, far too little to meet Tuesday’s deadline.

To get the project going, he’s now talking to banks for loans and he’s asking the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency to kick in up to $25 million.

“I am thrilled,” Jimmy answered, when asked about the opening of Margaritaville Biloxi. “Biloxi has been on my songline for a long, long time. I made my professional singing debut here back in the late 60′s, when I used to drive my Ford Falcon ‘down around Biloxi’ from the school in Hattiesburg, to play weekends at Trader Jons. Before that, I spent many a weekend, as a child of the Gulf Coast, with my family at the Sun ‘n Sand. I have been fortunate to do many things in my career, but coming full circle to Biloxi with Margaritaville, surely is one of the highlights. It is not only fun, to be coming home and bringing our brand of fun to the Mississippi Gulf Coast,” Buffett added, “It is also very gratifying to be able to provide nearly 1,000 new jobs for Mississippians these days. I would just like to personally thank everyone who has had a hand in this adventure, so, let’s let the fin begin.”

Five o’clock somewhere will be in Biloxi on May 22 when the ribbon is cut to start the party and open Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Casino and Restaurant.

Once the VIP celebration gets under way at 5 p.m., the resort opens to the public at 8 p.m. Buffett says he will be in Biloxi that day, said casino president Tom Brosig, but he’s saving some surprises for the opening.

Comeback king Lionel Richie has been tapped as opener for Jimmy Buffett’s July 28 show at Comerica Park, promoters announced today.

“Tuskegee” is Richie’s first No. 1 album in 26 years.

Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday for the show, which will include a day of tailgating outside the ballpark. Seat prices have not yet been announced.

Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band sail into Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy Aug. 25, for the singer-songwriter’s annual summertime stop.

The show is at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. May 12, with an eight-ticket-per-customer limit. Ticket price information wasn’t available Friday morning.

Parrotheads, prepare your party hats: A time-honored summer ritual will have a new home in Detroit, as Jimmy Buffett heads to Comerica Park for a blowout concert July 28.

The show, which will be formally announced today, will be the first-ever Detroit performance by the popular tropical rocker, after decades of dates at DTE Energy Music Theatre, the former Pine Knob.

At the New Orleans Jazz Fest on Thursday, Jimmy Buffett demonstrated that before “Margaritaville,” “Come Monday” and “Changes In Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes” were singalongs, they were songs. He and a skeleton crew returned those and more to their original, mostly acoustic, form at the Fair Grounds.

His Thursday show was in that spirit. Seated center stage, surrounded by an arsenal of stringed instruments, Buffett showed up for work barefoot, in shorts, a purple polo shirt, sunglasses and a baseball cap. At his side was Mac McAnally, a member of the Coral Reefer Band and an acclaimed country songwriter and instrumentalist. Lafayette’s Sonny Landreth, another frequent collaborator, alternated electric and acoustic slide on some songs; a percussionist also helped out.

With the Coral Reefer Band, he generally closes out a Saturday at Jazz Fest. There was far more available real estate at the Acura Stage for the unplugged, weekday Buffett show than last year’s fully amped, weekend show. He reveled in the change in latitude, if not attitude: “It’s great to be playing ‘locals Thursday’!”
