I have been out to Sicily every year for about 2 weeks since 92 with my reserve unit. We fly out of Sigonella, which is about a 20 minute drive on the A19 from Catania. Catania is a neat place to be in the daytime, real old world Sicily like Palermo and Marsala. Avoid it at night on account that it ...

Two types of fishing basically. Backcountry in Florida Bay or out into Florida Straits. If you are driving in, I wouldn't go as far as Key West to get your charter. If big game fishing is what you seek, off Islamorada is what we call the hump. Sea floor rises forming a hump driving the game fish to ...

The Twin Otter - otherwise affectionately known by those who have flown her as the Twatter. Some Twatters have been taken care of through the years, some barely used at all. Some are a bit rough around the edges, but once you get in there it's really not so bad and you kind of forget what the outsid...

A place I've been going to eat quite a bit lately when I'm in town is down 35th St (if see the FHP building on your right, you just missed it). It's the Keys Fisheries Restaurant right at the end of the street. They have one damn good Lobster Reuben as well. If you are up north a bit, Craigs in Tave...

Here's what I've thought for quite some time, although it would never happen (not by something other than an act of nature) Blow the bridge. Not all of them, just a few. Make being there and getting around there something that you must really want to do. The quality of life in Monroe County was much...

Spent my share of time on the water while stationed in Boca Chica. Back then, the base marina used to be at the sub pier, before the marina was built on base and relocated. We had a nice close group of people out there. Quite alot of memories on trips out to the Marquesas. One memorable time was a g...

I haven't made any of the EYW routes in a couple of months. I phoned my station personnel last night when I was done to ask them if they knew anything about it, and I got the verbal equivalent to a shoulder shrug. You have to think of the initial reaction to the plans to clear land for an airport in...

Not sure what the deal is about the new terminal. I'm with Gulfstream Airlines now, and we are in and out of there daily and nobody I know seems to know anything about this at all. Could be a nasty rumour. Traditionally, if there are large construction projects pending either on the ramp or in the b...

It's a total tear down. The hotel, tiki bar, pool etc will all be leveled. Another cool little drinking hole preparing to be paved over for another high end resort/spa.
Word around the chumbucket is as soon as the last of the spring breakers roll out things will start coming down.

Took my daughter and her friend to swim at Holiday Isle this weekend. Word is after the spring traffic pushes on up the road, the hotel will be a tear down. The bars, shops and of course charter operators will still be fully active.

You will be fine. I take my kids there at least once every 2-3 weeks or so. So much that last week my 8 year old charted her own course and after getting underway handled the helm pretty much all the way to Ft. Zach and around the bend to the bight. Spending time on the island with kids is no differ...

One of my favorite places recently has been Keys Fishery in Marathon. Heading south, take a right at 35th street...if you pas the Fl State Trooper building, you've just missed your turn. It's at the end of the road, only about 500ft once you turn off Rt 1. Great lobster bisque sammich. If you bring ...

Reports released today showed that the manatee was deceased prior to the mutilation.

Not that it makes the atrocity any less significant, but at least the creature did not suffer at the hands of a sick bastard with a machete.

I'm on board with windknot. Enough time has passed to form an educated opinion on the productive efforts of SMC and other groups. By far, Mote has documented much greater headway in the arena of awareness of the manatee. If money or efforts are going to be contributed, Mote is by far your best bet.....

When this story broke, all I could do was scratch my head. As one who has spent more time on the water between Bimini, Cuba and the Tortugas than I can readily recall, I have yet to come across anyone who is capable of such a thing.
