How is the weather in Salt Lake? While I agree the canyons aren't a huge deal, they aren't great when there's much snow. I've been behind a semi going 25 mph for miles and miles on that road and its not fun, even with the passing lanes available.

This isn't a very good option, but here's some info on the Amtrak train from Salt Lake City to Glenwood Springs. There's a RFTA bus for like $8 bucks each way from Glenwood to Aspen.
