I used to go to OBX during the week after Labor Day and it was far less crowded then during the summer months. However, I think it depends on where you are staying. Nags Head, for example, has fewer hotels/motels and more privately-rented homes so you could see No Vacancy signs given the few options.

How cool is that. I'll have to sneak down to the break room at work and watch.

It's not about the destination, it's about how many rest rooms there are along the journey.
