Miguel Cabrera turned 31 yesterday. Crazy stuff: http://i.imgur.com/rUVpb2g.png Very, very interesting. Bill James has a stat called "similarity scores" in which they compare a players stats to all other players in history. Cabrera's Most similar, total career (meaning if his career ended...

Okay I've got to jump on this Griffey thing only because you included Stan Musial in the discussion. For a 162 game average over their careers (BTW, they both played 22 seasons): Average Musial - .331 Griffey - .284 On Base Percentage Musial - .417 Griffey - .370 Slugging Musial - .559 Griffey - .5...

Re: 2014 Baseball Thread
Was Griffey healthy in 1993 when the Mariners finished last? First of all, they didn't finish last. There were 7 teams in that division, they finished 4th with a record above .500. Or in 1998 and 1999 when the Mariners finished near last? They finished in 3rd place, despite team ERAs of 4.93 and 5....

Re: 2014 Baseball Thread
And what happened to a 2nd place Reds team when Griffey showed up? Down to 5th place after 1 season. Then 3rd place. Then 5th. Then 4th. Then 3rd. Then 5th. Then 5th. Lots of time in the cellar. That a coincidence too? Not a coincidence at all. That 2nd place finish, that was his one healthy season...

Re: 2014 Baseball Thread
First, I will concede 1994 as a "great season" for Griffey. I hadn't taken into account the strike. Also, I have said that Griffey was a very good player. D*mn good. But not great - he had many (7) great seasons. But his career, when viewed in it's entirety was just very good. He was a co...

Re: 2014 Baseball Thread
He had 6 great seasons. I have always said that. 6 great seasons. Will never take that away from him. Maybe 10 mediocre. 5 that were pretty darn horrible. So, since Griffey only had 6 “great” seasons, I’m going to assume that those seasons were 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999. That would put...
