Re: What are YOU reading?

For the Low Country people out there, I have an author for you. Her name is Kathryn R. Wall, and she has the feel for the intrigue of life in southeastern South Carolina in her Bay Tanner mystery series. I recently read Judas Island and felt the warmth of a Hilton Head sun on my shoulders as a Hoosi...

Re: What are YOU reading?

Last Dorsey book I read was Florida Roadkill (decided to get to the origin of Serge), and I have Hammerhead Ranch Motel on deck. I love Serge's passion for all things Florida. Reading John D's Barrier Island at the moment, but it's not part of the Travis M. series. James Lee Burke is definitely at t...

Re: What's Everyone Listening To?

It's good but maybe not what you might expect, especially for a blues album from Gregg Allman. If you're familiar with producer T Bone Burnett's more recent projects such as Raising Sand with Alison Krauss and Robert Plant it has a lot more in common with that sonically speaking than anything Allma...

Re: What are YOU reading?

Just started Gator a-go-go by Tim Dorsey....... Last Saturday I also picked up both Dorsey's newest release Electric Barracuda and Randy Wayne White's latest Night Vision in hardback. It's rare for me to buy hardbacks, but I had various bonus coupons at Borders and thought I'd better use them up wh...

Quicksilver Dreams (of Maria) by Townes Van Zandt.

One of the most heartbreakingly beautiful love songs I've heard.

Re: Old Song-New Favorite

Hoot talked of wanting to hear I Have Found Me A Home in concert. I agree. Would be an excellent final encore song-just Jimmy and his acoustic guitar. Reminds me of when he broke out My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink, and I Don't Love Jesus to start the second half of the show in Noblesville a couple of ...

Re: What are YOU reading?

Just finished Randy Wayne White's The Sharks of Lake Nicaragua . First of his travel writing that I've read. Nice departure from the Doc Ford series. Currently reading James Lee Burke's The Convict and Other Stories . The Dave Robicheaux books are probably my favorite reads these days, so it's inter...

Re: Florida Literature: Who is your favorite author/character?

Just received Bahamarama by Bob Morris. Carl Hiaasen, Randy Wayne White, & Dave Barry give it praise on the back cover. Looking forward to reading it. Just started a Harry Crews novel, per your suggestions. Any insight on Spider Robinson books? Sounds like science fiction. What's the Florida con...

Re: Florida Literature: Who is your favorite author/character?

I just wrote down the names of the authors you have suggested. Thanks. I'm going to get on Alibris and check out what's available. Just finished James W. Hall's "Hot Damn". I thought it was a collection of short stories, but it was actually a collection of essays with some, however obscure...

Re: Florida Literature: Who is your favorite author/character?

Has anyone read anything by Darryl Wimberley? I picked up a book called Dead Man's Bay , with a main character named Barrett Raines. The first novel is apparently called A Rock and a Hard Place . I'll read it eventually, but was curious if anyone had any information or opinions on this author and/or...

Re: Florida Literature: Who is your favorite author/character?

Spider Robinson--another writer I haven't read yet. I'll try the Callahan's Key title first. Travis McGee should be feeling the love out there. Weirdo--Great insight. Tim Dorsey grew on me after the second book I read. Never thought about Sanibel too much until I started reading Doc Ford. It's on my...

Re: Florida Literature: Who is your favorite author/character?

sonofabeach--Thanks for the Bob Morris tip. Haven't ready any of his stuff, but checked out his website. I will definitely get a book soon. MacPhin--You met Randy Wayne White. I'm jealous. Thanks for the insight into his current life. And yes, I was remiss in leaving out John D. MacDonald's Travis M...

Tim Dorsey: Serge E. Storms 4. Tom Corcoran: Alex Rutledge Carl Hiaasen, Laurence Shames, Peter Matthiessen are also...

Re: Heron House, Harbor Inn, or La Pensione?

My wife and I went to Key West in July 2005. My first and only to Key West...so far. We stayed at the Heron House. It was quiet and the staff was attentive if necessary, but left you alone to do your thing. Continental breakfast each morning was great. Every evening included a Happy Hour with a dry ...

Re: 09 Tour Dates

Cincinnati Riverbend is a great venue, along the Ohio River. Tons of tailgating. Cincy fans take it seriously, since the term "Parrothead" was apparently coined at a concert in the Queen City, though it was at the old concert park at Kings Island. I'm in Indianapolis, so Verizon Ampitheatr...

Prince of Tides

Prince of Tides is a fantastic song; another tribute to his literary tastes. Pat Conroy, the king of the lowcountry fiction genre, wrote this amazing book whose essence is lyricised in Jimmy's music. "And beach music, beach music, beach music just plays on..."
