Re: What are YOU reading?

Derek Walton's daughter is an excellent Caribbean writer also. Think she teaches at the U-W.I. campus here. Just finished 'Duma Key' by Stephen King, started out VERY well, but then got formulaic and movie scripty at the end -- I kept feeling he'd been watching too many Pirates of the C. videos with...

Re: Houston - any reccomendations for a parrothead

From past trips, many, would second that on Galveston and Pappasitos... we went over to Kemah last time I was there for a while (October??) but sis says it is all gone now. Have a question for you Tejans... I need some western wear for an event down here on the island and I wanted to get it while I ...

Re: California Coast trip

That is sad about your Dad, although you could say he went out doing something he loved, which most of us will never get to. But still he didn't get a chance to know you. But as far as a convertible, you should! Here is a funny convertible story... one of our earlier trips to FL we were going to San...

Re: California Coast trip

Neat story! Yeah a Harley would be PERFECT! In the OC we loved the Sunday afternoons when the Harley riders would be out in the canyonlands in the Cleveland National Forest, at Cook's Corner, or riding Live Oak Canyon, Trabuco, Silverado.... sigh! When our younger daughter was 10, her Dad took her t...

Re: California Coast trip

Not a writer, just a traveller. Have a wonderful trip... and remember "you may never have the chance again... and you'll have to remember 'when' " so whatever it is, go for it!

Re: What is/was your High School Mascot?

(Isn't Duke University Blue Devils?) Our high school was the DHHS Tigers. Not very original, but, on the other hand, not wierd! Some wierd ones are the Goslings of Watertown HS in Wisconsin, and the Anteaters of the University of California Irvine, at Irvine CA. By the way, Blue Devils here are hist...

Re: California Coast trip

Have done this both directions and it is hard to beat! If coming from the south on the 101, cut over west on 46 from Paso Robles, having first stopped at Julian (take a picnic and eat under the trees) and Peachy Canyon for some wine, and the road over the Coast Range is SO scenic, the tops of the hi...

Re: How's The Economy Affecting Your 2009 Vacation?

Alas, it is NOT rare. Here on little Trinidad, we had 545 murders last year, one of the highest per capita rates in the world and far worse than nearly all US cities. In Antigua they had a horrorific murder of a newlywed British couple and a couple more killings since, in Tobago a murder of an elder...

Wow! It is amazing you could catch all that! Sounds like a good one... but Manhattan is spelled 'an' (like Buffett having two ts).
They cancelled the Tobago Jazz Festival :(

Re: How's The Economy Affecting Your 2009 Vacation?

Dubai is tanking -- haven't you seen the news. Go to Abu Dhabi instead. Don't go to either Guadaloupe or Martinique -- it may have not hit the American news consciousness much yet, but both are shut down and on the verge of serious revolution. I would choose Hawaii.

Minshall's not here anymore... he got famous and went to UK. Now the leader to be with is Brian McFarlane... but most people wanna just 'play', so they go for Tribe or Trini Revellers or whatever... the 'tourist' band is Hart's, but lots of expats play with them. We play with Jimmy's sports club, a ...

Re: How's The Economy Affecting Your 2009 Vacation?

Things are looking up... now it's Tobago in March, Palm Springs in April (conference), Turks & Caicos in May (one of Jimmy's tournaments, pre paid and all inclusive) -- and also turtle watching in May -- and Grenada/Carriacou in June (pre paid group trip), and maybe California in early June as w...

Re: How's The Economy Affecting Your 2009 Vacation?

Well, maybe Tobago, if you want a good beach. Trinidad is UNUSUALLY rainy this year, the crime rate is sky high, and we all afraid we gon' be soak for Carnival nex' week. Plus the King and Queen of Spain are arriving Monday, which means roads will be closed here, there and everywhere. Then the Summi...

Re: How's The Economy Affecting Your 2009 Vacation?

Even us islanders aren't going so far afield unless we have free tickets or someone else is paying... only to Tobago (US $50 RT) in March, and to Grenada in June with a group... but we get to go to professional conferences where someone else picks up the bill. We count those as vacations, too.

Just back, we stayed outside the park, this time, free on Starwood points... but should point out the pool at Beach Club is under reconstruction just now. We have stayed in Grand Floridian, Port Orleans, the former Disney Institute townhomes (think they are now timeshares) and Polynesian in the past...

Re: Do You Think Jimmy Is Worried?

Children in France and Italy drink wine (naturally watered down at first) with their parents every day. From when they are small. Lots of US states allow people under 21 to drink with their parents or spouse. When we were teens the legal drinking age was still 18 in lots of places as well. Our kids ...

Re: How's The Economy Affecting Your 2009 Vacation?

PS In years to come, your children will not remember if you had an updated kitchen, or how many bathrooms you had, or what your lawn was like. They will remember where you travelled together and what you did. Fixtures are not as important as family. Take the trip. The bathroom or kitchen will still ...
