Just spent a week at the Westin St John this past July. Definately rent your own 4 wheel drive jeep , the roads are crazy but the views are outrageous. Maho bay is my favorite place for snorkeling, try to rent a boat to go around the island. Waterlemon key is good. Go to the other side of the island...

the New York Helmsley is a great hotel , 42nd and 2 ave, not a far walk to time square, grand central station , the UN and the NY Public Library. The hotel will be right around $200 and for about $229 you can get a really great breakfast buffet package in the hotel restaurant.

i have no plans for diving yet, but will most likely take charters. The one i really wanna do is the dry tortugas on one of those high speed boats. so to take your advice i will not book a trip w/o a covering.
