SYCDW - Songs You Could Do Without

Post by FunkHouse9 »

Most of us have been to 2 or 3 or 20 Jimmy Buffett shows over the years. Similarly, I imagine that the majority of the crowds he plays to are repeat visitors. As we all know, there is a group of songs that essentially guaranteed to get played at a concert. Of these, we all have a couple that are near and dear to us, while others we could easily live without. Of the long-term fixtures listed below, which songs would you miss the least if he dropped it off for a tour?

Because I'm interested in a general trend and not establishing a clear loser, choose up to three songs you'd be okay with missing in order to make room for some of the many other gems out there.

Maybe it's because in spite of all the work we do, it's the child in us we really value.

I omitted Margaritaville because above and beyond all others, that is the tune he built his empire on. If it did get skipped, it would be a glaring ommission. I also left Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw off of the list because it has lost its status as a guaranteed song in recent years.

If he were to yank Pirate, OPH, Come Monday, or Fins, I'd be ver-ry sad.....

I chose Brown Eyed Girl, It's Five O'Clock Somewhere and Volcano. As a matter of principle, I should have chosen Southern Cross because it's a cover, but I have grown to dislike Volcano, so it won. I LOVE good covers, but once is enough for me. If he's going to play so many covers in a show, change them up. That horse has been beaten pretty badly by now IMO.

Yeah, I could have picked Volcano, too.. but SC drives me crazy, cause it's just not a note he can hit. I like the original..

When he plays Southern Cross acoustically, it's not bad. It's when he sings it harder with the full band that he can't get the notes.

I chose CIP, 5:00, and Volcano.

I don't hate any of the songs, but it would be nice to rotate some of them in and out occasionally.

The acoustic version last year was pretty enjoyable to me because he really changed it up. Hell, if he played Margaritaville in a beach-band fashion, I just might get excited like old times!

Eleventeen.
Plus, there was no option for "boobies". (although, it's doubtful anyone would choose to go without them)

[smilie=nod.gif] Just having APLAF on the list makes the entire poll invalid.

Sitting at home listening for free on RM you may not like FINS, but it's a great audience participation song.

Well I'm guessing I might be the only person on this whole board that actually loves Southern Cross live. It's such a great tune. Yes it's a cover but that doesn't make me hate it at a live concert. Anyways, worst out of the bunch are BEG, CIP and Volcano. And as a side note to Jimmy... thank you for not playing "All Night Long" on this tour :D

Funny how this makes me realize that I am sentimentally attached to the much reviled "yellow album" songs! My first impulse is CIP but actually that song reminds me of when I was a teenager, it was played on FM radio a lot.
I would have to say eliminate Southern Cross. I LOVE that song, but he just slaughters it! I did enjoy the acoustic version, but I like the original much better.
Actually I would prefer to do without the odd, anomaly covers that he does, like Yellow Submarine (ugh!), Midnight Rider (my ears were bleeding), Glory Days ... those "impulse" covers that are theme-oriented to the locale ... they seem slapped together to me, and I would rather hear more Jimmy tunes, even the covers like Everybody's Talkin, Steamer, Defying Gravity, Missisippi You're on My MInd, covers that he has put some heart into.
That being said, I am not one who really gets aggravated about covers. I have never had a bad time at a JB concert, and I've never regretted listening to a live broadcast! It's less about song selection for me, and really all about escaping the responsibilities and worries of adult life to spend some time with the friends that I have come to love, and dance, sing , and be silly. Jimmy Buffett's music and happy personality on stage are gifts that allow me to do that. So if he is happy playing Summertime Blues and that means another summer tour, I'm good with that! The crazy covers are kind of like having a friend sitting in the back yard at the fire, playing whatever the hell comes to mind. Not such a bad thing.
I'm just tryin to get by, being quiet and shy, in a world full of pushin and shove
