Watermelon SAT @ the MSC

Post by Saltx3 » August 3, 2019 7:48 am

Good Morning Everyone! Sounds like a few of us have some fun activities today -- Pittsburgh PH club's weekend "pool party/bash"; Jimmy in Virginia Beach. For the rest of us we can celebrate National Watermelon Day :D

NATIONAL WATERMELON DAY
National Watermelon Day on August 3rd recognizes the refreshing summertime treat enjoyed at picnics and fairs! Watermelon is 92% water, which is why it is so satisfying in the summer heat.
This vine-like flowering plant originated from southern Africa. While the word watermelon refers to both the fruit and the plant to botanists, the plant is a pepo. The pepo is a berry which has a thick rind (exocarp) and fleshy center (mesocarp and endocarp). Interestingly, pepos develop from an inferior ovary and are characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae.
While the watermelon fruit is loosely considered a type of melon, it’s not in the genus Cucumis. The smooth exterior usually has a dark green rind with stripes or yellow spots. The juicy, sweet interior flesh of the fruit ranges from deep red to pink. However, sometimes comes in orange, yellow, or white.
Since the melon holds plentiful water, desert dwellers likely first cultivated the melon. Another reason this is suspected is that wild melons were bitter and tasteless. Additional evidence of the watermelon’s value is supplied in the seeds and art found in tombs of Pharaohs. Over time, cultivation and breeding brought out the better qualities of sweet and tender fruit we enjoy today.
With proper growing conditions, watermelons grow to enormous sizes. Around the world, competitions award prizes each year for the largest one. The Guinness Book of World Records states that the heaviest watermelon weighed 262 pounds. To learn more refreshing watermelon facts, check out www.watermelon.org.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Pick up a delicious watermelon and slice it up. Invite the neighborhood over to share. While you’re enjoying the yummy fruit, have a watermelon seed spitting contest. Don’t forget to celebrate with the rest of the country! Post on social media using #NationalWatermelonDay.

I'm sure trying, Mr. SPH. It's been a rough one. If it was just my back, I'd have gone back to work 2 weeks ago.

TMI - but I'm sleeping with an extra pillow for comfort, and this morning I was on my back with pillow under the blankets. E said that's about as big as my belly looked before I had the surgery. :o :( I don't remember much, as I was on a lot of drugs.

How you be? :)

I be good... (could always be better, but could be a lot worse too!) We're plenty busy, right after we got home from Italy our 16 yo Bichon was diagnosed with cancer and had to have a splenectomy. She's taking lots of TLC and probably won't make it to 17 but right now she's doing OK, considering. Both of our daughters live in SF and both have been home to visit the dog (do they come home to see mom & dad? Nooo….) I spend my days working in the yard and carrying the dog up/down the steps when nature calls.

Good morning.

There's an event in town today called Coastal Sounds Festival. This is the blurb I fund about it: Sunshine, salty sea breeze, cold beer, and a free oceanfront concert - is there a better way to spend a Saturday in Myrtle Beach? It started at 11:00 but the music doesn't start until 5:00. The "name" attractions are Sister Hazel and Cassadee Pope. I can see not having them play too early but the organizers could at least have some local bar singers for background music for the first 6 hours.

It's taking place by the boardwalk, I think at the same site they use for the Carolina Country Music Festival in June, and it's free. I was thinking of going early to check it out and then maybe going back later for the music, it's only about 7 or 8 miles from where I live, but it's been raining on and off all morning. I might stay home.

Been cleaning like a fiend all day. The upstairs is officially ready for guests, the downstairs is clean, but I need to do the sweeping tomorrow morning before our youngest and her boyfriend and his little boy come to visit and have dinner. I will need to sweep again and mop on Tues before the grandkids arrive....the dogs will also get a bath tomorrow. Yikes...I need an adult beverage or 3! 🍹🍹🍹

I don't know about watermelon day, but my calendar says:

Be a pineapple;
Stand tall
Wear a crown
Be sweet on the inside

That'll do me a advice for a tropical life.

A question about Gumbo, if I may.

I've never had it when it's been prepared by someone who knows how - I've only ever made it from recipes or packet mixes.

I am doing a "Louisiana Fish Fry" brand one tonight (for some reason our local supermarket occasionally has random overseas products in a special area).

Should it be soupy or more like paella?

Although I seen some gumbos that are pretty thick, the gumbo we make is more soup-like (the 5th recipe here):

A Gumbo related update.

Oh my giddy aunt. For a packet mix it is delicious.

Made it with Polish 'Hunter Sausage' (good and smoky) and rotisserie chicken (what we call BBQ chicken here in Oz).

Must get back to the supermarket and grab a few more packets before they run out.

It wouldn't be "Tony Chachere's" by any chance? I've used that a few times and it always came out pretty good. :pirate:
