Did you hear the one about me being a punk?
Did you hear the one about me being a drunk?
Did you hear the one about me losing my nerve?
Or how I'm just another fucking sheep in the herd?
Did you hear the one about me giving a s***?
Cause if I ever did I don't remember it.

I'm looking forward to reading this. One of the teachers gave it to me for Christmas.

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. If you could pile all HeLa cells ever grown onto a scale, they’d weigh more than 50 million metric tons—as much as a hundred Empire State Buildings. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions.

Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave.

Now Rebecca Skloot takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s to stark white laboratories with freezers full of HeLa cells; from Henrietta’s small, dying hometown of Clover, Virginia—a land of wooden slave quarters, faith healings, and voodoo—to East Baltimore today, where her children and grandchildren live and struggle with the legacy of her cells.

Henrietta’s family did not learn of her “immortality” until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. And though the cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, her family never saw any of the profits. As Rebecca Skloot so brilliantly shows, the story of the Lacks family—past and present—is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of.

Over the decade it took to uncover this story, Rebecca became enmeshed in the lives of the Lacks family—especially Henrietta’s daughter Deborah, who was devastated to learn about her mother’s cells. She was consumed with questions: Had scientists cloned her mother? Did it hurt her when researchers infected her cells with viruses and shot them into space? What happened to her sister, Elsie, who died in a mental institution at the age of fifteen? And if her mother was so important to medicine, why couldn’t her children afford health insurance?

Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences.
I must be wishing on someone else's star....

Thanks for the reminder about this one. I just grabbed this, Kevin Smith's Tough Sh*t and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I need something after the garbage I read this weekend.

I'm looking for other recommendations, too.
I knew this girl made of memories and phrases, who lived her whole life in both chapters and stages.
Danced 'til the dawn, wished all her worries away.

She's a long way from a West Nashville grand ballroom gown.

I just finished "Natchez Burning" by Greg Iles. But you kind of need to read the the first 3 books in that series (Penn Cage).

Currently reading Mr. Mercedes.

This Summer I read four books about those who hiked either the Pacific Coast Trail or the Appalatian Trail. Memories of an age gone by when I too used to make "life" fit in a bag I carried on my back. Ok, try to remember the books :o

Wild- saw the movie too
Almost Somewhwere, http://www.amazon.com/Almost-Somewhere- ... 0803240120
Blistered Kind of Love- http://www.amazon.com/Blistered-Kind-Lo ... 0898869021
And the Bill Bryson book Robert Redford made into a movie- second time through and still laugh out loud and wake your sig other up :D A Walk In The Woods http://www.amazon.com/Walk-Woods-Redisc ... 0307279464

Good summer reads.

I've heard the name of Terry Tempest Williams come up quite frequently over the past few years, so I went down to my favorite used book store and picked up a few of her books. I really enjoyed, read it twice...as in finished it and then immediately started over, "An Unspoken Hunger." Now, one of my favorite books.

Also read, "Red, Passion and Patience in The Desert."

I know it's been awhile but what's everyone reading?

Last thing I read was Last Train to Paradise about Henry Flagler. He tried to build a train route all along the FL coast and all they way down to Key West. It did not survive due to hurricanes but parts of it eventually became A1A.

And that was months ago. Anyone have some good book suggestions?

Since the 8th and final season of Game Of Thrones won't be on until next year, I started rereading A Song Of Ice And Fire. I'm on the second volume now, A Clash Of Kings.
what I really mean . . . I wish you were here
