Our pet is an 7' boa constrictor. I would feel awful leaving it behind, not because of the emotional attachment, but because the harm it could do when not properly caged.

Is he named "Johnson" and attached to your body?

Or does Steph keep him locked up these days? Is he crate trained?

We live by this motto in my family:

No dog left behind.

My teenage kids still think the "dog" in the motto is me, but it really refers to our 3 year old Golden Retriever Sam.

He goes where we go - it is just that simple. He's family.

I've actually thought about that a lot when I was watching some of the Katrina victims who would not leave because they couldn't bring their pets.

I can truthfully say there is no way I or my husband would leave our dog behind if we were in any way physically capable of bringing him with us. He is, to us, our child, and we just couldn't abandon him.

Cripes, I was an emotional wreck when I had to leave him in a kennel for a week and I knew he was in good care so we could go on vaca with my parents (who normally watch him if we go away).

Same goes for my horse. Unless for some reason we can't, he gets loaded in the trailer, and he comes with us. I love him the same as I love my dog. We'll figure something out on the way to wherever we would need to go.

We have a tarantula, too, named Shelob. She'd be coming, too ;)

Just couldn't do it, I couldn't live with myself.
Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all..

The only pet I own is my 13 y/o Golden Retriever.... He's my bud....he got lost last Easter and it was the most harrowing few hours until he was found. However.....

Would I leave him? No.

Would I give miy life or the lives of my family for his? I hope I never have to make that decision because I dont want to know the answer.

Might I make other arrangements if he couldnt go? Yes.

In FL any intelligent person has an emergency hurricane plan. Ours includes 5 different places we could put / board Cody IF we couldnt take him wherever we were going (IE a shelter).

A pet would be the last thing on my mind. Sorry, but Fido would get left behind to fend for himself. People come first.

This is why I don't have dogs. luv 'em, but too dependent.

See, I kind of see that POV too. In a house-fire type situation, it's all about the people in my mind. Probably wouldn't be thinking too much of our snake or fish. In a situation such as a hurricane, though, when there's some sort of advanced notice, I would make arrangements for the pets.

Exactly! And in a fire... the dog will run out of the first open door!

That was my point... if you own a pet, take responsibility to make arrangements if you have advance warning.

I said depends on the situation... but in reality, I could never imagine not taking my girls with me if I needed to evacuate.
