Ben Roethlisberger In Motorcycle Accident

Early reports say he went over the handlebars and hit his head on a car windshield. He wasn't wearing a helmet. No mention of the extent of his injuries.

Why are helmets with motorcycles optional, but not seatbelts in cars? Just curious.

I worried about this happening when I found out he rode motorcycles and preferred not wearing the helmet.

I don't know why in some places it is optional. The governor of our state even wants helmets to be optional....doens't make sense.

Well, helmets aren't optional in all states. In the states where they are optional, it's because motorcyclists are a much better lobbying group than those opposed to seat belts. Here in PA, we had our helmet law modified about 2 years ago...after a 25 year fight to do so.

Being an excellent motorcyclist doesn't make other people (in bigger cars) better drivers. As wonderful as it might be to feel the breeze and whatever, I'd want my nugget as protected as possible.

I should also add, though, that I don't need a law to tell me wearing a helmet is a good idea.

Thank you, Garry. I think everyone should have to ride a bike for year before they get they driver's license. Not having the security of a cage surrounding you, you have to watch your ass, and therefore become MUCH more aware of your surrounding on the road.

It appears New Hampshire is the only state that does not have some sort of seat belt law:

Did they say anything about career-threatening? Wasn't there a basketball player (I think from the Bulls, but I'm not sure) who was in a motorcycle accident 2 or 3 years ago? I don't pay much attention to the NBA but I don't think he's played since the accident.

Exactly. When Steve Moore got pummeled by Todd Bertuzzi, his injuries weren't considered life threatening, either, but I'll be damned if he'll ever play pro hockey again.

There's an old Seinfeld bit where he says that one of the strangest inventions of man is the helmet! We choose not to change our head cracking lifestyles, but instead try to protect it with a piece of plastic.
And what's the deal with wearing a helmet when you are skydiving? If the chute doesn't open...isn't the helmet wearing YOU for protection?

Pittsburgh news conference said Ben is in serious but stable condition and is undergoing surgery.

Apparently he was coherent and talking after the accident. Someone said it may have been something with his jaw.

I wonder if he was riding alone. He told Cowher a while back that he always rode with a group, that he thought that was safer. Of course it would be safer to wear a helmet too, but....

Hope he pulls through ok...
