you know how to make a girl blush thats for sure...but I am pretty handy with a knife and carving things up so...make sure you're on my best side.
well if you are pretty good with a knife then are also valuable on the protection front when I start hollering "tell your boobs to stop staring at my eyes" the next time I am drunk in Ft. Lauderdale with ya
Sure I can protect ya...then again, if you stare at my boobs there won't be a problem...well I can't speak for Nicole though :)
she can stare at them with me
Good then we'll be even cause I was just staring at hers :)
now, then or both?

Can you please explain to me WHY I was brought into this conversation?? If the shoe were on the other foot and it was ME bringing YOU up out of the blue then I'd catch hell from you and someone else for MONTHS about it.

I don't appreciate this - not one bit. Please keep me out of your arguments with my friends in the future.

Thank you

When this story broke, all I could do was scratch my head. As one who has spent more time on the water between Bimini, Cuba and the Tortugas than I can readily recall, I have yet to come across anyone who is capable of such a thing. I know just about all of the commercial operators from Miami through Key West, and the word around the barstools is this is the work of a seasonal visitor. We have many that show up in the fall that try to cut a living on being a part time backcountry flats guide when the weather turns to crap up north. They are shady operators, and they are pretty much outcasts as far as the local reputable people go.

Shared a few beers just the other day with an old friend Capt. Gallaher, who owns/operates Great White II out of Holiday Isle and we talked about it quite a bit and came to a mutual conclusion after we were halfway through our first beer.

The ones who carve a living out of spending time on the water with charters have more respect for these creatures than that. You have to understand the immense amount of money required to get a commercial fishing operation going here. Risking it all for one manatee just doesn't add up.

This has seasonal visitor written all over it.

I live just up the coast from where this happened, more than likely the animal got tangled in a gill net (illegal) and was killed in retaliation for tearing up the netters gear.

The animals themselves are still loved here in Florida by the boating community but there are very few serious boaters/fishermen that have any loveloss for the Save the Manatee club. They are roundly despised and just maybe this was someone with a screw loose trying to get back at SMC in some displaced anger type of way.
Way to jump in and blame the commercial guys...
[smilie=q-mark.gif]

Where did I say commercial???????? please point it out to me??????

I said "illegal gill net" which would make the user a poacher that sell his catch for commercial profit, no different from a "rec" that goes offshore and loads the box with more fish than allowed and them sells them through the backdoor at a local seafood resteraunt.

For those that support Save the Manatee Club, if you really want to help the animal (manatee) and not just fatten the wallets of the club then give your donations to Mote Marine labs in Sarasota. SMC has done nothing, nad, zip, to help the manatees themselves in the last 5-10 years. Mote is the best bet to eradicate/lessen red tide and therefore directly help save manatee lives.

This event makes me ill. :x :( I cannot stand to hear about cruelty to poor animals. I get  livid when I see, for instance, dogs tied up to a tree, with only a couple of feet of line and no water. When I see things like this, I wonder about the human race. We have a long way to go.

You're right, my bad...if you see a few posts later where I say something to the effect of how I overreact sometimes to these...yeah, I do. I know. Sorry.

My relatives have done everything on the water from commercial red snapper fishing, running the mailboat from Tampa bay to Cedar Key, to being head of the Pilots Association in Tampa Bay. I've got no problem with legal regulated commercial fishermen, there are gear types I think are wastefull and Gill nets were one of them. :)

The only resonable opinion I could come up with for this manatee deal was that he got entangled, otherwise why cut off the flippers?
A recreational guide mutilating the already dead corpse makes no sense either.

The only thing I know factually is that Parrotheads would do more to help these animals if the donated to Mote rather than SMC.

I'm on board with windknot. Enough time has passed to form an educated opinion on the productive efforts of SMC and other groups.

By far, Mote has documented much greater headway in the arena of awareness of the manatee. If money or efforts are going to be contributed, Mote is by far your best bet...IMO.
