The 2009 Summer Movie Season Discussion Thread

Post by MileHighPirate »

Do you enjoy The Summer Movie Season? [smilie=superkewl.gif]

Well then, Welcome.

This will be the thread to come to all summer long to discuss what you've seen OR what you want to see.

EXAMPLES OF FILMS COMING OUT THIS SUMMER (NOT MY LIST OF PICKS)
WOLVERINE
STAR TREK
ANGELS AND DEMONS
TERMINATOR: SALVATION
LAND OF THE LOST
UP
TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN
HARRY POTTER 47
THE HANGOVER
PUBLIC ENEMIES
BRUNO
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
The list goes on and on and on as to what we'll be choosing from this Summer........

The two in BOLD are two of my most anticipated (Throw in TRANSFORMERS 2 while you're at it for The Definitive Popcorn Film of The Summer (read: YEAR)

You can chime in and say what movie(s) you are most looking forward to, submit a review, agree to disagree, whatever.

I will be using my newly created rating system that you can choose to repeat throughout the duration of this thread OR you can create your own. Whatever works people.

Here's My Movie Rating System That I've Created 8) :
One Tequila = Horrible
Two Tequila = Pretty good
Three Tequila = Now we're talking!
FLOOR = A Tailgate AND A Bag of Chips!

============

Here's My First Review for The Summer 2009 Movie Season:

STAR TREK = FLOOR

I saw an early screening in The Mile High City on April 28th.
It was great!
I'm NOT A Trekkie, NOR do I know a lot about The STAR TREK Universe as a whole.
With that having been said, THIS FILM DELIVERS IN MANY WAYS: It's Entertaining, Fast Paced, Exciting, FUNNY and a GREAT way to get lost for 2 hours and 6 minutes.

SUMMER MOVIE TALK: LET IT BEGIN!

What's with the number? The title is "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"; film #6 out of what should eventually be an 8-film set (would that be an 'octology'?), since I believe they'll have to do "HP and the Deathly Hallows" as a two-parter — similar to the way Tarantino did "Kill Bill" — if they want to truly tie up all the loose ends in a relatively coherent manner.

Or is this a feeble attempt at sarcasm or disdain for the series? It's truly not that bad a series; no worse than some others I could name — such as "Star Trek", "Indiana Jones", "Star Wars", or even "James Bond" and its now constantly-morphing title spy (used to be you knew who Bond was; not any more!).

And just a 'by the way' — some of "Public Enemies" second-unit footage was filmed in and around my hometown of La Crosse, WI. They paid to restore a marquee (with neon lights, letters, and all) of a currently-closed movie theater for one scene, which I'm pretty sure stayed in. I'm sure I'll recognize others when I see the film in its final form.

Angels and Demons....looks really good. I really enjoyed the book, and I really liked "The Da Vinci Code"

My wife and I went to see "Wolverine". I give it 2 and half out of 4 stars. For me it was formulaic. In addition, for some reason the "Matrix" effect is used here. I'm tired of the slow motion effect to show how fast the action really is.
I guess the summer movie blockbuster is no longer for me.

Star Trek may look like a movie I may want to see. As long as those effect cliches that I've seen in the trailer stay out of the movie. "Up" is on my list. Harry Potter, wife likes that and will drag me to it. "Transformers 2", the first one is good. I try to avoid sequels. The magic and the heroe's journey is over. I'll catch it on HBO in 11 months.
I'm at the point in my life I woud rather watch Bergman, Kurosawa and Godard all weekend.

I saw Wolverine on dvd a few weeks back.
Not bad but my wife, who's a big X-Men fan loved it.

The one that will most likely get me to the theater is Terminator Salvation.

I'm a Star Trek fan but I'm not sure if I'll go see this. If I saw the trailer in a big theater I'd probably change my mind. I sort of feel like that, along with the Terminator one, is all played out.
Now, I totally want to see Harry Potter. They have an IMAX theater 5 min from my house and I saw the last HP movie there and it was awesome. At least I think it was the last one. Nonethless, if this one comes out for IMAX and it is plays there, I am so going.
Twenty degrees and the hockey games on...

Can't wait for Angels and Demons. The book was excellent. Better than Da Vinci in my opinion.

The Harry Potter 47 was a jab on my part mostly because (while, yes, the books are a gigantic success) the series to me is a bore and repetitive (harry gets in trouble, harry wants to kiss a girl, some new magic potion explodes and a bad guy who isn't scary gets killed or disappears). Obviously, I'm not into this series the way a lot are.

Weird note:

I saw STAR TREK for a 2nd time last night before it opened nationwide today.

Why?

Aside from shockingly loving this movie, a friend had passes for a brand new IMAX screen that just opened.

They were showing STAR TREK last night on IMAX to introduce both the film and new theater.

STAR TREK on IMAX is INCREDIBLE!! I truly felt at times like I was seeing this film for the first time.
The sound was mind blowing (I felt the bass rattle me on many occasions) and the crystal clear digital clarity of the HUGE images were truly great!!

Do not hesitate about seeing this on IMAX because not only does it kick a$$, it's only going to be playing nationwide on IMAX for only 2 weeks.

Next up: A possible free and early screening of TERMINATOR SALVATION.

This could be a fun and affordable time at the movies this summer for me. 8)

To be continued........

banality of evil. Hannibal Lecter doesn't look particularly-evil when you see him at first. Then you watch him escape from the cage in Memphis and you know.

My friends know that I'm usually the anti-summer movie crusader,
but last year there was a couple shiny ones amongst the piles of coal...

and I think that even I could enjoy watching the new Star Trek flick
