Been there 5 times. We prefer Caye Caulker over Ambergris Caye but that puts us in a minority.
Take a look at our website. Pictures and reports from a few places in Belize. Its a nice country. English is the language. The people are great.

Belize link is on the left. January would be a great time.

Well he came down on vacation, 'cause he liked the tropic sun
Margaritas and the music, made it all seem fun
He bought a piece of heaven on the Carribean seas
He's a happy little camper in Belize

Bri has been there 5 times over the last few years - he stayed in A Caye
He enjoyed A. Caye, it's a little bigger than Caye Caulker - do you have a price constraint? There are some very nice Condo's you can get fairly inexpensively that are close to the airport or you can go more high end with the all inclusive routine.
Scuba was great - recommend Ramon's Dive Shop, the equipment is good and the service was excellent
Food is inexpensive but limited in selection - basically Belizian Rum and Beer the whole week you're there as well.
Excursions to do snorkeling
Excursions to the spa and mayan ruins, two places the mayan ruins on the mainland are all day events but fun - you might see dolphins along the way. Altoon Ha (sp) is closer Lamina (sp) is two boat rides and two bus trips to get there
Blue Hole is lifetime experience but is a three hour boat ride with potentially rough seas - the wall dives after the blue hole are spectacular

I second Caves Branch.
Look at Placencia.
Go to Seine Bight for Garifuna Day -- outstanding!
I LOVE Ek Tun. http://www.ektunbelize.com/
San Ignacio rocks!
Try overnighting at Tikal!!!
I've been kinda done with AC now that there are so many cars on Front street. Gosh darn, if barefootin' it to Ruby's for a bread pudding sunrise wasn't my favorite thing ever!
Enjoy!

Oooh, those planes are wee! Often 6 to 12 pax. If you're really lucky, you get to sit up front with the pilot!
Never took the water taxi between BC & AC. You may wish to look at ambergriscaye.com forums ... and check-out the websites for Tropic Air & Maya Airways.
Enjoy!

I have not been yet, but my brother Tom manages a BAR/restaurant on Ambergis Caye called Fido's. Our friend Kit owns a three cabana resort with a BAR and restaurant called the Capricorn.

It sounds like paradise down there. Say hi for me if you go.

We loved it- stayed a week in Placencia at Green Parrot Beach Houses, couple days in Belize City, overnight at Banana Bank Lodge in Cayo. Will find a link to some photos to post. We were there in January 07 I think. January was a good time to go.
Excellent diving & snorkeling.
The bugs are worse than you can imagine if you are in the jungle.
Saw tons of birds & wildlife!
Very laid back, very friendly people, we always felt very safe, even during our very odd adventures, which included being stranded in a town called Armenia with after running out of gas on the 'highway', and an off road adventure miles away from any people with a visit from heavily armed and slightly sketchy police offiers.
Not grand cuisine, and never, ever order a hamburger or steak in Belize. Always stick with the chicken and seafood.

Wonderful. Spent a week there and was never bored.
Check out www.belizenet.com
There was 1 all inclusive in the cayo I think called Belize River Lodge. Dunno if they made it.
Stay on the coast or on a caye. We did three days at DuPlooy's www.duplooys.com and enjoyed it very much BUT we love the water so we were so happy to get to Placencia/Robert's Grove.
If you are into adventure, look into some of the resorts in Punta Gorda - very off the beaten path.

I don't want to live on that kind of island
No, I don't want to swim in a roped off sea.
Too much for me, too much for me
I've got to be where the wind and the water are free.

Roberts Grove is a well organized nice place. We used them for scuba & snorkel when we stayed at the Green Parrot up the road, and can recommend them. It is a pretty big resort for the area.Catch&Release wrote:www.robertsgrove.com
