I visited Key West every summer from 1979 - 2001. From 1994-2001 I was fortunate enough to "housesit" each summer for 2-3 weeks for friends in a great Old Town hundred plus year old home on William Street between Caroline and Eaton. Great location, great house (pool in the backyard, stumbling distance to Mallory Square and Duval).

Long story short .... I considered myself to be a Key West "veteran" ... I was practical a local. Then one summer after I was married, I took my wife on a few "touristy" things.

Danged if the Conch Train wasn't pretty cool. I enjoyed it and actually learned plenty. Do it.

Eat at Louie's Backyard Grill. Awesome ambiance and great food! You can sit outside in the yard at a table on the water.

Climb the lighthouse. The view is one-of-a-kind. (Take binoculars.) The displays are cool too.

Also, Fort Jefferson for the day (by plane or ferry)...

We are wanting to go next spring to KW. Fort Jefferson is one trip that we will just have to make. I want to go by seaplane so we have decided just to fork out the $$$ and do it. Can't wait.........now just have to get an exchange with our timeshare and trade somewhere.
I found this site that might help. Has maps and other things too.

You must do some diving, or snorkeling, around the reefs near Ft. Jefferson. The are spectacular!

Definitely the lighthouse. We enjoyed Hemmingway's house tour. Our tour guide was quite humorous and the factual stuff was really interesting.

1. Schooner Wharf
2. Pepe's
3. Green Parrot
4. Blue Heaven

If they're driving to Key West, make sure they stop at Alabama Jacks in Key Largo and start the trip off right.

Definitely Make a stop at Pier House....Very very nice place..then go inside to the Chart Room Bar. Youll notice its kind of out of place...But its a piece of history. Bubba and the Chart Room go way back.
All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz & i'm fine

Here is the Undisputed, Ultimate, Award-Winning Guide for BNrs on What Do in Key West from the people who did it all -- Hats off to BFan53:
They asked what to do, we told them, and they did it all in three days!!!

Try the Search feature. It really works! viewtopic.php?t=68012&highlight=
Returned to our home in Pennsylvania late Sunday to overnight temps in the 30s.....quite a shock to the system after 3 days in KW with sunshine & daytime highs in the mid 80s!

Thanks to the many BN suggestions we accomplished a lot in those 3 days:
> Flew into Miami & rented a car for the drive down. What a breathtaking trip for a first time visitor.
> Had lunch at No Name Pub with friends who just moved permanently from NJ to Ramrod Key.
> Saw key deer on Big Pine Key, cute!
> Stayed at the KW Doubletree Grand Resort. New hotel out near the airport. When I heard Radio Margaritaville playing as a entered the lobby I smiled..... Beautiful pool. Nice room. Hotel shuttle to downtown runs every hour from 8AM to 11PM. Quiet to sleep!
> Breakfasts at Blue Heaven (delicious banana pancakes & Baby's coffee) & Pepe's on Caroline St. (had french toast with fresh fruit & orange cream sauce, interesting nude portrait inside!).
> Lunch at BO's Fishwagon (grilled fish sandwich & cold beer, perfect).
> Ice cream at the Flamingo on Duval (wow!)
> Dinners at Conch Seafood Republic, Magaritaville (yeah, not a gourmet meal, but we had to stop, sat right next to the stage wishing JB was playing, it was cool that as my wife was eating her CIP, JB's video of that song popped up on the video screen!), & Turtle Kraals (had my first meal of stone crabs, tasty!).
> Did the Tours & Trails of Key West tour (formerly Tours of Margaritaville) with Tim as guide, stopped at the Chart Room for beers, fun stories, good time.
> Took tour of Hemingway House (fun).
> Took Conch Train tour (needed a break from all the walking!).
> Sat by Shrimpboat Sound several times, but alas no activity!
> Had several slices of key lime pie at Kermit's while watching for activity at Shrimpboat Sound.....
>Stopped at Captain Tony's & Hogsbreath Saloon.
> Went to the top of the La Concha Hotel for sunset, but deck was closed for a private party, drats!
> Experienced a perfect sunset among the madness of Mallory Square!

As expected, the time went way too fast and we just didn't get to spend time at Sloppy Joe's, Louie's, Rum Barrel, among others as hoped. I guess that just means another trip to KW is needed!!!!!!

Again, thanks to all of you who posted your experiences. It was a wonderful guide for a newcomer......
