Another venue that says NO ALCOHOL allowed in the parking lot. Anyone tailgated there previously? Curious as to any sort of waiver for this show.

I haven't been there in a while for a concert, but there are ALWAYS people tailgating. Here is an old Yelp thread I found on the topic: http://www.yelp.com/topic/denver-red-rocks-tailgating. I think me and Hubby are going to see Flogging Molly this summer, so I'll try to give a better readout once I have re-experienced the venue.Dr.Corona wrote:Another venue that says NO ALCOHOL allowed in the parking lot. I am not sure what the stance is on RVs at Red Rocks, but I can tell you I've never seen one there (it's pretty curvy getting up into the lots). That doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but I would definitely call.
This is what I would tell everyone, just based on what I know about the Red Rocks landscape:
1. Park in the lower lots, rather than the upper lot near the visitor center. The upper lots tend to be more "watched" than the lower. Could be rumor, but that's the rule we've always followed.
2. Leave the flip flops in the car and wear real shoes to the concert. There's a HELLA lot of stairs. Imagine Jiffy Lube/Nissan, and x10. If you park in the upper lot, you walk down the stairs to your seat, but have to walk UP to get out. If you park in the lower lot, you have to walk up a hill and some stairs to GET to your seats, but you get to walk down after the concert when it's dark. This isn't just a paved walk you'll be doing. You're climbing up a mountain. While sometimes paved, there are definitely dirt/gravel parts that are a steep incline.
3. Don't climb the rocks. People get drunk and die climbing the rocks at RR several times each year. Don't be that person.
4. Colorado in general is a pretty progressive state. Recreational weed is legal here. You can walk into a weed store and just buy some weed. It's not legal to smoke in public, but that's more of a guideline, and typically it's not what law enforcement is looking to bust people for unless there's another associated disruption. Be chill. Don't be an a$$hole.
5. Weed in Colorado is different that most weed everywhere else (Washington/Oregon being the exception). Don't believe me? Ralphie May came here and smoked too much weed and was too high to perform.
6. There are plenty of people hanging out at their cars pre-concert. I haven't been to RR for a show in some time, but I doubt tailgating will be a problem.
7. Red Rocks, while not in the mountains IS in the foothills of Colorado and is about 6500' in elevation. If you aren't used to the elevation, that elevation ON A GIGANTIC ASS HILL after you have been drinking/smoking isn't a small deal. It's not a lovely flat, paved parking lot situation. We're talking gravel/dirt lots that are basically landscaped into the wilderness of Colorado.
8. October in Colorado is unpredictable. There could be snow. There could be a blizzard. It could be 75 degrees that day, but in the evening it will get cool/cold no matter how warm the day was. Bring coats, hats, and gloves and dress in layers.
9. Think about renting a 4wd vehicle if you are flying here...or see if you can get your hands on the Colorado state animal---the Subaru Outback.
10. Did I mention the elevation? Drinking at sea level is not like drinking at 6500'. Don't say I didn't warn you.
11. Weed.

GREAT reply, Mal. She's right about it all.
Hubby and I have been there several times in the last few years. Twice for Zac Brown. We brought Subway sammiches and some beer/wine/vodka. Just hung out on our lawn chairs and kept the drinks in plastic cups. We've seen some small grills (propane, not charcoal). They 'allow' the tailgating, but you gotta be pretty mellow about it.
