I answered 2000-2005 because that's when I discovered RM (like, when it started, eh?) and BN and the existence of Parrotheads.

Before that, Jimmy Buffett was someone whose music I knew vaguely (Come Monday, Changes in Latitudes, Margaritaville) from when it was new, and whose books I had read (Tales from M'ville, and the other one from that era).

I'd known his music a long time, and loved what I knew, but wasn't a fan, let alone a phan!

In the summer of 2003, I started lurking, then I joined the phlock here and went to my first concert, where I met a number of BNers, and decided I'd be roosting here for a while.

Glad to know someone who is an regular here in my phan frame. Being part of this group has really added to my enjoyment. I have no club close by and haven't been able to get to meetings. With my 3 sons it is a major event just to arrange my concert going with them...once a year.

Well, I guess I can be considered the baby parrothead on the block. I started really paying attention to Jimmy's music last summer in 2007 when I subscribed to Sirius. I landed on RadioMargaritaville while surfing the channels, and the rest is history. This year I will be experiencing my first show, and I can't wait.

Friends took me to Alpine for my first concert in 1995 and that did it. Just wish I had gotten into this earlier!

Me 3.

I'm sad to say I came to Jimmy later than my good friend Conolulu.

Freshman year of college -- 1976. First guitar song I learned in a class I took that year was Margaritaville. It was good stuff!

First concert in 1978, second in 1980, and third in 2001, Feb. 14 in Tallahassee. Got hooked all over again, and had to join Buffett News.

Winter of 89-90 digging out from under 12 inches of heavy wet snow and needed something to distract me from the cold. Coconut Telegraph and SOASOAS dual cassette that I took from my brothers tape collection. Hmm I wonder if he misses it?

I became a fan the summer of '77 when I was driving from Ann Arbor MI to New Orleans, and for a change of pace was listening to the AM country music stations. There was this really cool new song out that was being played over and over. I learned the words quickly and was soon singing along.
I drove back with the idea that country had some value to it, only to find that the local top 40 stations were playing that new song as well!

I returned to the campus based radio music programing that was mixing up the Ramones and other "New Wave" with Bob Marley and other reggae stars, but missed my new friend Jimmy.

Bought "You Had to Be There" on vinyl when it was released, and tried to convince friends that Buffett was not just a one hit wonder.

Several CDs later, while in Key West with the family ('97 to be exact), after leaving Duval St. Margaritaville Cafe with cheeseburgers in our tummys and newly purchased Barometer Soup in the CD player, our youngest (six at the time) asked: " I can't remember, are we Parrotheads?

Believe it or not, I answered: " No, no,... we just like Jimmy Buffett alot".
Try telling that to my friends!
To them just travelling 260 miles and buying lawn seats makes us major PH's!
What would they call Larry?

Can't forget - it was 1981 (High School) and I was at a party and someone put on a couple of Buffett Albums (yes I am that old) and from that moment on I was hooked!!

Drinking Labatts 50 beer (at that time), smoking a Players Cigarette (quit smoking in 2000), listening to Jimmy and eating pizza...ah the high school memories!! :)

I was in the Coast Guard and stationed on a tiny island in the Pacific
from 1977 to 1978. Some of the guys were from Florida and we used to sit around getting wasted and listen to Jimmy Buffett. :pirate:

I went to my first Buffett concert in 1995.

Why couldn't I have been born sooner. :(
Now I know this Joe down in Mexico.
He went there to work on his tan.
For years he's been plugged into blenders and songs.
They call him the Twelve Volt Man

Really stuck when I saw him open for The Eagles in '77 - the summer of Margaritaville. Timothy B. Schmidt of The Eagles dubbed us Parrotheads at that time - so the story goes.
Sounds like a few of the Texoma Crew were at Tarrant County Convention Center for the Eagles (Hotel California tour) when Jimmy opened. :P

I "discovered" Jimmy in the late 1970's (around 1977 or so).
I didn't become a parrothead until my first concert in 1985, however, I didn't KNOW I was a parrothead until my second concert in 1995.
I've been to at least two shows a year since then. (The most being 2001, when I was at six concerts).

I'd have to say sometime in 2000, maybe 2003... but it was one of those "oh I know this song...I heard this one and that one before". So I always knew who Jimmy Buffett was but got more serious about it after 2003... Guess that still makes me a newbie  . Which is why I suppose I'll be considered a "virgin" if I make it to the Raleigh concert. BTW I love this site!!
