cover songs
is ther any other artist in the top 10 grossing tours who does more covers than jimmy? and besides the stones, who else has such a prolific collection of albums than jimmy in the top 10 grossing tours who does so many covers?
if you cant laugh at yourself, laugh at someone else.
I don't think Bob Dylan does very many covers if any at all he's got so many songs and albums. The Stones seem to do at the most, on average, one cover per tour. Well, not ALL of their tours, at least since 1972. They've always done a Chuck Berry tune or Robert Johnson and lots of others - Dylan and Buddy Holly on the Voodoo Lounge tour - but have never peppered their shows with more than one it seems. Usually.
It seems that the Stones also have recorded somewhat of a majority of their covers for studio records in the past, with the exception to Like A Rolling Stone and The Nearness Of You.
I know Jimmy has about 50 plus covers over his 20 plus (wasn't License To Chill his 26th studio album?) studio albums, enough for him to release a box set of covers (ha ha). But he only seems to do one handful - BEGirl, Lovely Cruise, Southern Cross, 5 O'Clock, HGLookin', WOTWorld on tour. I might be leaving some out but you get the point.

Anybody know of a list of Jimmy's covers? Was thinking about burning a CD of just covers.

Since Jimmy actually performs on the recording of "5:00 Somewhere," I don't think we can rightly call it a "cover."JustDucky wrote:I know Jimmy has about 50 plus covers over his 20 plus (wasn't License To Chill his 26th studio album?) studio albums, enough for him to release a box set of covers (ha ha). And he's done "Banana Republics," "Everybody's Talking," and a couple of other covers on tour this year, IIRC.
But ultimately, he can only do so many songs in a show out of all the songs he's ever recorded, plus anything else he feels like doing. Assuming you're right about 26 studio albums and assuming an average of 10-12 songs per album, that's 260-312 total cuts. And he does about 28 songs per show. So he can really only do about 10% of his repertoire on any given night.

I like many of his covers.....His verison of Gumbo by Phish is great for example....and since I really don't like Phish...not a song I am going to listen to any other way!

It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere IS a cover, since Jimmy had nothing to do with the writing of it, just as all the other songs he's covered (Spider John, Lovely Cruise, Stars On The Water, Steamer, I Don't Know And I Don't Care, Pacing The Cage , Apcolypso - er, is that how's it's spelled? etc...). That's what makes a cover song a cover song.
I did make a list once of all the covers he's done, including the two Marg. Cafe records and LTC and it was A LOT of covers. It was over 50. I think it's a bigger list than even the Stones!

To me there are several answers to this:
1) Some covers he does are of songs most folks have never or would never have heard. Ballad of Spider John is that song for me.
2) Some covers are either tributes to musicians he likes or of songs he likes. The Dead, John Hiatt.
3) Some covers the crowd in general (not everyone) goes wild for in concert such as Southern Cross and BEG.
To me he seems to enjoy doing covers. I think he is a talented songwriter himself and perhaps sells himself short, but as long as he is having fun he wil keep doing this, and that is why we are all here

If he recorded it on a studio album and it is a cover does it count...?
Stupid Question......

Re: Covers
I made one of these a couple of years ago....here's what I put on it....talatta wrote:Anybody know of a list of Jimmy's covers? Was thinking about burning a CD of just covers.
1. It's Five O'Clock Somewhere (Alan Jackson)
2. Hey Good Lookin' (Hank Williams)
3. Southern Cross (CSN)
4. Mexico (James Taylor)
5. Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison)
6. Scarlet Begonias (Grateful Dead)
7. Uncle John's Band (Grateful Dead)
8. Sail On Sailor (Beach Boys)
9. Another Saturday Night (Sam Cooke/Cat Stevens)
10. Stars On The Water (George Strait)
11. Jamaica Farewell (Harry Belafonte)
12. Sunny Afternoon (The Kinks)
13. She's Got You (Patsy Cline)
14. Everybody's Talkin' (Fred Neil)
Couple of notes...
1. "Five o'clock" may not technically qualify as a cover, since he's on the original, but it was on an Alan Jackson album.
2. George Strait did "Stars on the Water" after Buffett, but it kind of qualifies (and I really like the song - lol).
3. I left off the Bruce Cockburn covers - tried to focus on songs that are more out there in the mainstream.
4. I need to go back and add "Werewolves of London" now, and I'll probably put Phish's "Gumbo" on as well....I can also put on "No Woman No Cry" from the Club Trini CD, and rip the audio for "City of New Orleans" from the Wrigley Field DVD.....should round out the iPod playlist nicely!
BTW, this has been my most requested Buffett mix CD by my friends...

Re: cover songs
Imo, if he has recorded the song in a studio then it's okay.VB for Buffett wrote:doxadive wrote:is ther any other artist in the top 10 grossing tours who does more covers than jimmy? and besides the stones, who else has such a prolific collection of albums than jimmy in the top 10 grossing tours who does so many covers?

But who am I to decide? When it comes to him playing a few covers live in concert, I've got 2 craps and I'm keeping them
