I've had a chance to listen to the disc 3x now this weekend. Here are my thoughts. Overall, this cd is an 8.5 out of 10.

There are several standouts:

Bama Breeze
Everybody's On The Phone
Whoop De Doo
Cinco De Mayo in Memphis
Hula Girl At Heart
Wheel Inside The Wheel
Silver Wings
Breath In, Breath Out, Move On

My top 3 in order:
Bama Breeze
Everybody's On The Phone (good to hear Fingers back)
Wheel Inside The Wheel

Over all: the disc has excellent production. I was glad to see mailboat move away from the Digipack style of CD case and back to an original style one.

Everybody's On The Phone: I thought was damn good, then Finger's harp solo kicked in! I just had to turn the sound up! Jimmy's songs needed Finger's hard from day one. I'm glad Finger's is back on the cd. This one has a strong finish.

I'd like to see Jimmy do more blues style songs now that Sonny Landreth & Fingers can be called on. Maybe get a live show recorded in New Orleans...

4 Out of 5 Stars after the first few listens. It might be 3.5 stars but I'll bump it up since there's no sign of Toby Keith and Jimmy seems to have left that whole mainstream country thing behind him. I'd like to think he wandered into Nashville for an album, played with some of the animals, heard a few Kenny Chesney songs, puked in his mouth, and headed south for the islands on a very fast plane.

Beautiful decision to choose a Crowded House song to cover since Neil Finn, much like Jimmy, goes too often overlooked as a songwriter. The arrangement is ambitious and I like it. "Everybody's On the Phone" plays the role of "Math Suks" and "Simply Complicated" as the corny lyrical song that he seems determined to write for each album. "Duke's On Sunday" sounds great and having heard it live in Hawaii after a day of drinking at Duke's makes it special to me and I'm sure others who were there that night.

Like most albums in the later years, there's some filler here and there but I'm enjoying the return to a more traditional Jimmy sound. Not nearly as consistent as Banana Wind or Barometer Soup but certainly the best he's done in several years. It has me listening to JB again which is a very good thing.

Thanks JB!!!!

Sounds Great to Me

Post by BambooBreeze »

My CD arrived today and after the first listen, I like it a lot and certainly do not think it is as "country" sounding as many may think. Also you can get the songs/album on iTunes if that is the route that some may go.

Good album!

TTWWY Review

Post by captcraig »

I just got this on the way to work this morning. I think it's great. It has a feel of every thing from Barometer Soup (Party at the End of the World) to Somewhere Over China (Everybody's on the Phone).
It just feels like a new 'old' record. Some steel pans on a few tracks and then the others are just well written, good songs.
I'm a huge fan of Jimmy and never rarely am I displeased with any thing he does. But if I take a step back and put that aside, I can honestly say that even those who may not be big fan of Jimmy, can enjoy this music.
The dude just gets better and better. There is no one who can do what he does and the day it stops, will s***.

His own, of course. With Jimmy's taste, I'm sure he saw right through the Nashville hacks and bolted town quickly.

Made it throught the first time, going around again right now.

1. Bama Breeze - very good song, I hope it replaces something from the yellow album and becomes a concert regular
2. Party At The End Of The World - I can take it or leave it, the live version is a little better than the studio version
3. Weather With You - not a bad tune, I'd like to hear this one live
4. Everybody's On The Phone - except for the return of Fingers, I could do without this one
5. Whoop De Doo - anytime you get a chance to hear Mark Knopfler play the guitar it's a good thing
6. Nothin' But A Breeze - another good tune that I'd like to hear live, I can't remember a Jesse Winchester song Buffett's covered that I didn't like
7. Cinco De Mayo In Memphis - a fun song with a nice mariachi touch
8. Reggabilly Hill - one of my favorites on this CD, add it to the setlist
9. Elvis Presley Blues - not great, not terrible
10. Hula Girl At Heart - another one of my favorites and another one that needs to be added to the setlist
11. Wheel Inside The Wheel - I like it, get rid of Piece Of Work and replace it with this
12. Silver Wings - again, not great but not terrible, might be nice to hear live once but that's about it
13. Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On - one of my favorites, not only on this CD but in Buffett's catalog
14. Duke's On Sunday - I've liked this Henry Kapono song since I heard JB do it as the final encore in Honolulu last year
what I really mean . . . I wish you were here

Larry, you pretty much wrote my review, with a couple of exceptions:

PATEOTW- didn't care for it in concert, I like the studio version a little more.
Whoop De Do- agree about Mark Knopfler, but this song didn't do it for me.
Elvis Presley Blues - not my most favorite, but its got a catchy rhythm. Good foot tappin' song.

My early favs are Weather With You, Nothin' But a Breeze and Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On....but I've been singing the chorus to Duke's On Sunday in my mind since hearing it on CMT over the weekend. :)
