Post by Staredge »

Ok, folks. Fess up. What song do you LOVE as an album cut, but HATE to hear performed live??? Come on, you're among friends. You can tell us. You know, that ONE song....you're at the show.......hips swaying......booty shaking......and then you hear......the opening notes!!!!! :o [smilie=puking.gif]

Only fair I should go first.

Margaritaville.

Yep. I said it. Say it again.

Margaritaville.

THe mother ship. The genesis of the Buffett mystique. Launching pad for a million parties. The song that kicked off a thousand summers.

I hate hearing it in concert.

HATE the "SALT SALT SALT" chant.

Hate the over-the-top, WAAAAAY too orchestrated party beat to the song.

The original has always appealed to me because of the laid back groove. The slight tinge of melancholy. The slow island beat, taking me away to a lazy end of summer day on a beach to be named later. None of which show up in concert.

Give me Jimmy with an acoustic, Robert with the pans, and a cold rum-based beverage and I'm a happy man.

Otherwise, I'll suffer until OPH starts up!!!!

I've been a Buffett fan for 12 years but have only seen him once. 1999 in Nashville. I just wasn't impressed in that I felt it was too scripted and contrived. I accumulated many live bootlegs of Jimmy thereafter and my theory was valid in that the setlists never change by much. However, I loved the party atmosphere. I'd rather listen to the original CDs. Thus, I realluy don't like any of the live songs. Too much talking when he should be singing and his horrid habit of yelling (emphasizing) certain lyrics.

I've long wished Jimmy would play less standards and more obscure stuff live. I've really grown tired of One Particular Harbor live. They do it pretty much every show and it's too long and they never change it up. There are others I don't ever need to hear live again but I'm done pretending that Buffett will change up his set lists that much. The shows are fun regardless.

Agree with Staredge and CongoBill... and I'm not fond of Cheeseburger in any form, especially the cheesy intros...

I'm split on Mvile. I love the laid back album version, but i also love the party atmostphere of the live version, except that f**** SALT SALT SALT part which drives me insane. Sadly, i also think that Jimmy's "reeferets" ruin many of the songs. Sometimes I cant stand their voices.

So far I count 5 less people I will have to compete with to get tickets to his concerts. That is great news.
I have seen/heard many, many of his songs live repeatedly at shows (last count was 45 times). I can say without a doubt that M'ville was played at every show I have seen in the last 30 years (7/2/77 was my first). Would I rather he play other songs? Heck yes. Would it disappoint the newbies if he didn't play the standards? Probably some. Do I care? NO. Will you stop buying tickets and only listen to the studio albums? Gawd I hope so. Sure there are songs that I would rather not hear, but when he throws out a golden nugget like The Peanut Butter Conspiracy or The Great Filling Station Hold Up or (especially) They Don't Dance Like Carmen No More, it just makes my night.
I will enjoy every minute that he is still on stage no matter what he plays.
Oh, and I have hated the Salt, Salt, Salt since it's inception.

Not at all crazy over Cheeseburger In Paradise.

Others I could do without in favor of his rarities are:
Fins
W.D.W.G.D.A.S. (which I think he's actually skipped at the last couple concerts)

Songs I dislike that he's yet to play live (thankfully):
The GOD-AWFUL Elvis Imitators
Domino College
Barracuda
Baby's Gone Shopping
Mental Floss
I Used To Have Money One Time
Fool Button
Someone I Used To Love

I do have my favorites, obviously, but anything else he plays, other than the songs I just mentioned, is fine with me.

Southern Cross and Brown Eyed Girl

I like both songs but I'm just sick of hearing them. And after hearing Van Morrison do Brown Eyed Girl live, Jimmy should never do it again. I still like hearing Margaritaville, but that salt, salt, salt BS has to go.
what I really mean . . . I wish you were here

I've only been to one concert but listen to as many live on RM as possible. I agree completely with the SALT, SALT, SALT problem and the shouting of words (although I don't agree that his voice has gone bad).

And I could do without the referettes also (so I'd never conside by a CD by Nakirah covering JB's songs). I can live without Cheeseburger, BEG, and SC. I still like JB's music (the ones he has written) the best - especially the original versions. And I know someone's said it before, but I also don't like the up tempo live version of Jolly Mon.

And Tin Cup Chalice in Orlando made my night!!!

Margaritaville and OPH- because they signal the end of the first set or the end of the show (pre-encore, at least). And Cheeseburger. I hate that song, unless I'm sitting at the booth closest to the band at CiP, in which case I love several notes, but not the actual song.

Good point!!!!!! It does leave a pit in your stomach when you know the concert or first set may be ending!

It's not as bad, though, when you know you have tickets to another concert soon...like Paris!

Songs we have heard too many times would be a good description of the songs most are listing, at your 40th show margaritaville is either repetitive or part of the experience. My personal pick excluding the monitor montage from the parking lot is wdwgdas. The other question is what songs did you not love on the album that you liked once you heard them live?

Everybody's on the Phone
Domino College
When Salome Plays the Drum
Gypsies in the Palace

Oh, and I never liked Pencil Thin Mustached until I heard it in Aspen!

When Jimmy tells the little stories about the songs before he sings them is the BEST!! :)
