The Boss at Halftime

Post by catsway »

We were wondering what everyone's take was on the Super Bowl halftime show featuring Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
We have been fans since the early eighties. But watching the halftime performance was very hard to do. First off, Bruce must have COPD. He doesn't have the lung capacity to hit any of the notes. Certainly his energy on stage had us and the crowd rockin', but to see his closeups and hear his voice strain to get close to the notes was awful. Plus, his licks on the guitar were terrible. The rest of the band sounded great, but the guy mixing the sound had Bruce's guitar so cranked up, it overpowered the horn section most of the time. Not saying he should retire, I am sure that a studio would provide all the enhancers to make Bruce sound better, but his live show needs some help.
BTW, I hope his crotch feels okay after her rammed the cameraman...

Yeah, watching that crotch shot on my friends huge screen TV was pretty funny, we actually all backed up and went "WHOA" - even the kids. It was pretty funny. I"m not a big fan and I always kind of felt that the best part of him was his lyrics and the band anyway. I was impressed that he was in shape enough physically to lean backwards like he did when he first came out. And I guess I never thought his voice was that strong to begin with so I didn't really notice. It was a lot of fun though, wish i'd been with Meghan in the crowd!

See, I disagree. I actually thought it was a pretty good performance. His vocals aren't what they used to be, but he's not as young as he used to be either. It was better than I expected, especially after seeing his performance at Obama's inauguration concert. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I get good seats for the Springsteen concert going on sale this morning.

The three of us watching all thought he was going to pass out...he was wheezing, short of breath and begging Steve to "help me out".
I've seen him a couple of times back in the 80's...after watching last night, I doubt I'd take a free ticket to go see him again.

I rather liked it; I've never seen him before.
He must be doing lots of yoga, to do that back stretch!
And sliding into the camera was kind of goofy--and as someone said, amazing for those of us watching on a big screen high-def TV.

I dunno if "Amazing" was my first thought when Bruce's junk filled every square inch of my 50" Plasma.... But can you imagine the number of 911 calls across the nation if they'd decided to do the entire halftime show in 3-D??!!

Aside from that, I thought it wasn't bad.. he seemed almost overly energetic and probably spent it too early, and the sound mix wasn't quite right, but it was a decent performance overall for a compacted 'event' venue.

I actually thought it was a lot of fun. I thought the "Working on a Dream" was probablly the wrong song for halftime at the Super Bowl. I loved "Glory Days" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out". At 59 years old, The Boss and the E-Street Band still blow most folks that are out there touring right now, completely away.

"Hungry Heart" is the first 45 rpm I picked out when I was a kid, so The Boss will always have a very special place in my musical lil' heart. [smilie=hearts.gif]

I loved the show! His longtime fans still love him, and there is always some young person becoming a fan. I'm really not a fan of his, but I definitely respect him as a musician.

The "begging" is all part of the show...he's been doing that for years. The last leg of the tour last year was great. Nearly 3 hours every show. Playing audience requests, and a lot of things off the cuff. I think that is something a lot of people on this board would love to see from Jimmy.

Would have been better if he had bagged Glory Days, the song just bites the big one. As for his voice and not being able to hit some of the notes, you listen to Buffett try to hit some of the notes in, just for one example, Southern Cross the last few years? It's painful.

Larry you just don't like Glory Days sung by Bruce because you'd rather hear Jimmy sing it.... ......

I thought Bruce did great. He's 59 and he's still hot. It was exciting, energy filled, and fun. And as far as his voice being weak?, I just put on my vinyl from 1984....That's how his voice has always sounded. As far as the mixing, that's a soundmans nightmare. A stadium? Trying to make it level for T.V. and the live fans? Oh no, I don't want that job. And when Bruce slid too far into the camera, he was laughing harder than we were, it was hilarious.

On a side note, the superbowl halftime shows have been great recently. Paul, Prince and Bruce......

make that 10:02!-I was in at 10:00 and then it came up with no tickets for me

I don't think he sounded good yesterday, and he generally sounds better than that. I still want to see him again as it is usually a great concert!
