For those of you who listen to Radio Margaritaville on a regular basis, I'm sure you've discovered songs you've grown to like outside of Jimmy's that you probably would have never known if you didn't listen to RM. I've discovered these....

Well, to name some of the artists I've "discovered" or "re-discovered" listening to RM: Henry Kapono, Bankie Banx, Pink Martini, Johnny Klegg, Donna the Buffalo, Lyle Lovett, Livingston Taylor, John Hiatt, Sonny Landreth, Scott Kirby, The Boat Drunks, The World's Greatest Fishing Band.....to name a few!

Another good idea is something called "Pandora" (site is http://www.pandora.com). Once you're logged in, you tell them a little something about music you like — like JB, or the Beach Boys, or AC/DC. The program/system then uses something they have dubbed the "music genome" to find other songs similar to the material you specified. And you can fine-tune it by giving each song a 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down'.

I've got it on in the background right now. It started with "Beach House on the Moon", that was followed by Bob Marley's "Jammin' ", and after that came a live version of Kenny Chesney's "When the Sun Goes Down" w/ Uncle Kracker (sp?). After that maybe I'll get something perhaps by Bob Seger, or the Eagles, or Alan Jackson, or another Bob Marley or Jimmy. Some of the comparisons/similarities are a bit of a stretch, but for the most part it's all good.

And while you're listening, they give you a little thumbnail bio of the artist, and a brief list of similar artists. For Bob Marley, they list Ziggy Marley, Stephen Marley, Peter Tosh, and Steel Pulse. Chesney's list included Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, and George Strait.

RM has helped me find a lot of new Trop Rock artists, especially Jim Morris and Sunny Jim, as well as reggae and soca music. But the first non JB song I head on RM that made me want to go find it was Steve Goodman's "How Much Tequila Did I Drink Last Night?". The kind of song you might only hear on RM, back in the day when it was Internet only.

There's a ton of surf rock that I wouldn't have discovered without RM. Add to that John Hiatt, Gomez, Sunny Jim, The Boat Drunks, etc. RM even helped me to discover some Buffett music that I'd somehow overlooked.

There are quite a few artists that I had never heard of that I have realy enjoyed on RM . . I too really like Brett Dennen, among others.
Peter Meyer's "Shall We Dance" really hit me the first time I heard it, I actually thought "Gee I never heard Sting sing this one before . . . "

Wow...now *that* is a cool site!

Sadly, it proves my point - there isn't a single Trop Rock artist on last week's "top spins" list who isn't also a current or former Coral Reefer, or who hasn't shared a stage with Jimmy.

But it's nice to see they haven't totally abandoned the genre, only marginalized it.

Last week I couldn't get on RM for about 4 hours at work. I listen everyday and our crack IT team had blocked it (along with other sites). I told them I couldn't work without my music.......I'm listening right now........
