I think once Wakefield returns from the DL the great Smoltz experiment may be over. One decent start (KC) in 4 doesn't bode well. His fast ball is flat and down the middle. No room in the bullpen (barring a trade), so what do they do with him?

BTW, I have tix for Tuesday And Thursday vs Oakland.

2 years in a row that the reigning Cy Young Award winner has been traded by what has to be one of the dumbest GM's in baseball. The owners were worried about payroll again, they may really worry next year when nobody shows up, be just like the 70's and 80's.

(Must be for the future, since he wouldn't be ready until the end of August anyway)....

So because they traded away their starting pitcher for tonight they went with their bullpen (Carrasco, Pena, Dotel, Linebrink) against the NY Yankees... Amazingly they WON this game

Jake Peavy sent to White Sox for Aaron Pordea, Clayton Richard, Adam Russell and Dexter Carter. My reaction: White Sox take a HUGE risk because of the injury. The Padres get a HUGE haul. Richard could be the next Mark Beuhrle, Poreda has a lightning arm (and could be a future closer if he doesn't start)

Roy Halladay NOT traded No shock there. I think when Riccardi talked to the Yankees, he asked for Jeter, Rivera, Sabbathia, Teixieria and a 26-year-old Babe Ruth, with the Yanks paying all of their contracts.

Nick Johnson traded to Marlins for Aaron Thompson If you want any further proof that ESPN has a reporting bias towards the Yankees and Red Sox, I give you this quote: "Former Yankees prospect Nick Johnson was traded to Florida today..." Um, he hasn't been with the Yanks since 2003...and never was significant with them, never played a full season...

Scott Rolen to the Reds for Edwin Encarnacion, Josh Roenicke, and Zach Stewart. Why? I get that Rolen wanted to be traded out of Toronto "for personal reasons". But do the Reds really feel this move helped them for the future? Because they aren't competing THIS season!!! Baffling.

Joe Biemel to the Rockies for two minor-leaguers Bullpen help for the Rockies wild-card push. Nice move.

Jerry Hairston, Jr. to the Yankees for a nobody. Two thoughts... 1) THIS is the Yankees big splash???? 2) This justifies my above comment about the Rolen trade....baffling. If they are trading to compete now, why trade your super-U?

Victor Martinez to the Red Sox for Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone, and Bryan Price. Nice haul for VMart. Indians are rebuilding and have Carlos Santana ready to take over for V-Mart anyway. Why not trade him for 2 top pitching prospects? I like the move for both teams. THIS is what deadline day is all about.

Casey Kotchman to the Red Sox, Adam LaRoche to the Braves. Clearly a secondary move for the Red Sox after the Victor Martinez deal. LaRoche is the better player, but Kotchman is playing better NOW. This move helps the Braves, he is a long-term upgrade. It hurts Kotchman, as he loses full-time status. For the Red Sox, just a salary move.

Twins get Orlando Cabrera for a minor leaguer. OK, it gets them a veteran bat. Don't see it being enough to get them over the hump.

Tigers get Jarred Washburn for two minor leaguers. I'm baffled by this trade. Don't get me wrong, good move for the Tigers. But the M's were asking Milwaukee for Mat Gamel or Alcides Escobar, and instead take a nobody starter and a minor-league hump. Washburn is inconsistant but having a good year, and his style fits Comerica. Good move for Tigers.

Claudio Vargas to Brewers for Vinny Rottino. Didn't the Brewers just cut Vargas? OK, it was 15 months ago, but yes. Rottino is not a big prospect but a fan favorite as he is a local boy.

Cubs get John Grabow and Tom Gorzellany from Pirates for Kevin Hart, Jose Ascencio and Josh Harrison. The Pirates goal appears to be 100% roster turnover in one year.

George Sherrill to Dodgers for Steve Johnson and Josh Bell Bell is a good prospect, but this move makes sense for the Dodgers, who also just got Hong-Chih Kuo back from the DL. They suddenly have a GREAT bullpen!

And...the moves from earlier in the week....
Freddy Sanchez to the Giants for Tim Alderson The Giants become a better team now, but will regret giving up Alderson. Then again, they are so deep in young arms, they probably felt they could afford one to get a former batting champ.

Mariners acquire Jack Wilson and Ian Snell for Jeff Clement, Ronny Cedeno, Aaron Pribanic, Brett Lorin and Nathan Adcock.Are the Mariners buyers or sellers? Hard to tell, but they needed the SS, and Snell still has potential. They gave up on Clement, one of the few members of the amazing 2005 draft not to have success at the MLB level already.

They spent a gazillion dollars in the off-season and for once, didn't want to take on more payroll, and since Cashman has taken over complete control of the roster, he's been reluctant to deal prospects (ie. the Johan Santana dealings). Hairston is an upgrade over Cody Ransom as the backup infielder and can also play the OF which is a plus since Brett Gardner got hurt as the Yankees 4th OF. Ransom was god-awful at 3rd base whenever A-Rod DH'd. Hairston should be better.

As a Yankee fan, this one hurts, and in my mind puts Boston as the team to beat in the AL. A middle of the order of Youk, Papi, V-Mart, Bay, Drew, and either Lowell or Varitek is gonna be scary. But the Sox gave up a lot, and I really liked Masterson. Great deadline deal for both teams.

The Yankees were also looking into Washburn and Seattle was asking for either Phil Hughes or Joba, and the Yankees weren't going to give up their one of their two best young arms for a flyball pitcher to pitch in Yankee Stadium. Also, the deal was made early in the day, so it's not like Seattle was up against the deadline.

I am so sick.....I go away for a week of vacation and the sox cant win one game!!!! Even my Binky Daniel Bard is starting to look like John "Way back" Wasdin. I am a die hard sox fan but the Yanks are Clearly the best team in baseball For Now.
