Victory for Vicki Cookbook

Post by East Texas Parrothead »

Update 9/21
The cookbooks are available for pre-order. They are $25 each with an online price of $26 to cover paypal fees. To order them, please visit the "Recipes That Matter" section of the PTM website;
http://www.partiesthatmatter.org/index. ... -s-Victory

We expect them to be shipped out to everyone in time for Christmas. Mr Play will confirm your payment and provide email updates as we get closer to the publication date.

Some of you have been following the "Good Thoughts for Our Vickster" since late June.

viewtopic.php?f=31&t=77776

Vicki is facing some tough decisions. She's had heart-related health issues for some time. Now, her doctors are looking at transplant as an option. She's probably going to get a VAD pump and be put on a list for a heart transplant. If she's lucky enough to get a new heart, she faces huge monthly payments for anti-rejection drugs. She's on a fixed income and even with help, she can't afford the meds.

I have been wracking my pea-sized brain for something we could do to help her. I don't own a phamecutical company and I can't give her my own heart.

I was stumped - until today.

In her past life, Vicki was a caterer. She organizes our buffet line each year at the Frisco Feeding Frenzy and brings all of her chafing dishes and other professional stuff for us to use. She's a wonder. Her attitude is upbeat and she's always willing to do anything she can to make things work. We couldn't feed everyone without her.

Duh, ETP.

We need to do something we know! We need to do something that lets every BNer contribute something.

We do a cookbook.

We name the cookbook Recipes That Matter.

We ask Lulu, Bubba and the Coral Reefers to submit recipes.

We collect 300 completely new recipes in eight categories (Appetizers and Adult Beverages, Soups and Salads, Vegetable and Side Dishes, Main Dishes, Breads and Rolls, Desserts, Cookies and Candy and This and That) - and we get our submissions in before November 15.

We use the company who printed PHruitcakes in the Kitchen. They now offers an on-line option so everyone can enter their recipes from their own computer.

We design a completely new cover design.

We charge $25, including shipping and handling.

We set up a PayPal option - thanks to Mr. Play - at http://www.partiesthatmatter.org/index. ... -s-Victory.

We raise enough money to give Vicki a head start for her new heart.

We make a difference in the quality of life of one of our own.

Here's the phirst submission:

Best Blue Cheese Dressing Ever - phrom ETP, with a little help phrom Tyler Florence

Equal parts sour cream and Hellman's mayonnaise
6 - 12 ounces of quality Blue Cheese, crumbled - depending on the amount of servings you want
Dash of lemon juice
Dash of Tabasco sauce
Coarsely ground black pepper to taste
Mix all ingredients. Chill. If dressing is too thick, thin it out with a little milk or cream. OMG this is some good stuff!

Having done all the entering for PHruitcakes in the Kitchen I and II, ya'll just have to trust me that this format is 2,000,000 percent easier than everyone e-mail us the recipes, reviewing the recipes, cutting and pasting the recipes onto a program on my computer, putting the recipes onto a disc and sending them into the company. I can't believe how simple this format is.

Here are the instructions for entering a recipe:

Click on this link: http://www.typensave.com/

The login screen will appear.

Contributor: PartiesThatMatter
Group Login: victoryforVicki
Password: pap36

There is some general information on this page re: deadline, how many recipe slots are still available, etc.

In the 3rd box down, click on Add Recipe

PartiesThatMatter is our account name.

The next 2 boxes are for you to add:

Your BN screen name: East Texas Parrothead
a/k/a Terry Mathews, Winnsboro, TX

IF YOU ARE ENTERING AN ADULT BEVERAGE under Appetizers and Beverages, please type in the title like this

ADULT BEVERAGE - SKINNY HILLBILLY

You can subtitle it whatever you want, or not at all, but putting the ADULT BEVERAGE before the real name will ensure that all the cocktails are listed together.

Please capitalize only the first word in your ingredient list.

Example: 1 lb. Coarsely chopped potatoes

If you're using the oven, please put your preheat instructions first.

SHIFT + 6 will give you the degree symbol.

We don't have the option of adding "recipe notes" in our format, so put additional comments at the end of the recipe.

Click on the "check spelling" option, make any corrections and then click on "preview recipe" and you're done!

If you have problems, e-mail your recipes to Vickster she'll enter them for you. She's the recipe guru, I'm telling you.

Thanks so much.

It feels good to do good.

Notice the lack of precise measurements in my first entry! 8)

My grandmother taught me to cook and she never measured ANYTHING ... but everything she made was delicious. :D

Thanks for offering to help. Not sure how it's all going to play out now that everyone can enter their recipes from home!

Love you to the moon and back!

Morris Press in Nebraska. They rock.

When we do the "official roll out" next week, I'll post the link and contributor password so you can get after it, ScarletB. Thanks for helping out.

I just set now up our account and entered the first recipe. It's pretty user-friendly, once you get familiar with all the options. The site even has SPELLCHECK! And, you can see what the recipe is actually going to look like before you hit SAVE.

OMG. This is so much easier than having everyone e-mail us the recipes, reviewing the recipes, cutting and pasting the recipes onto a program on my computer, putting the recipes onto a disc and sending them into the company.

All we have to do is:

Log on.
Enter the recipe.
Save.

This is going to be greatness. Thanks ETP! [smilie=superkewl.gif]

So everyone knows what to expect, the "Recipes That Matter" sub-page is being updated with an easy-order option using Paypal. I will update here when that piece is done. Or if you prefer to mail a check, you will find the address on that page as well.

Of course if you just want to make a donation to help Vicki, you can do that now. Just include "For Vicki" in the comments section. All of these "extra donations" are 100% tax deductible, and all of the proceeds will go directly to Vicki.

The publisher's website for entering the recipes is also coming soon...

I have been truly blown away by ETP's racking her brain to come up with something that can help me. ETP is the best - a rare gem - like a Diamond. I just cried when I read her e-mail asking if she could post a thread on BN and then telling me she thought she could come up with something that could be put into a fund for the cost of the anti-rejection drugs was unbelievable.

I've been a little overwhelmed with this - I'm going through all the testing now to be put on the transplant list. Of course I will be on the bottom of the list. They have 10,000 people per year that need heart transplants but only receive 2,500 hearts each year. I'm also "O Negative" blood type, so I fall into the last category. They have told me I have one to two years without a new heart.

I believe in miracles and especially phinn power! I have a lot of people praying and I have a peace that I can accept whatever happens. There is a VAD pump they can implant that would last about 5 years and maybe more - up to 10 - then by then you hopefully get a heart. There are also lots of out of pocket expenses if you have the VAD. Besides the fact that you wear a battery pack and have to change the batteries every 4 to 6 hours and have to plug in to recharge each night. Maybe everyone should have a machine that we plug into each night to recharge and it would keep us healthy! LOL

I'm taking this one step at a time, but UTSW in Dallas must know going into the transplant process if I can handle the "after transplant" expenses.........I am going to try to find some part time work also for a few days a week working from home and will put all of that into the special account so it can be building up (but it would be a small amount)........you can earn so much doing part time work and still keep your disability. However, my heart is so weak that they have told me that they will never know how quickly it will get worse and usually when you hit the "tipping point", you get real sick, really fast. So I know I would never have the energy to work more than a couple of days a week - but I'll try whatever I can find. I wish I could say that I have investments or CD's, but unfortunately I don't. When I was so sick almost the entire year in 2006 and part of 2007, my savings, etc. were wiped out but they did approve my disability very quickly which doesn't happen too often.

Buffett news folks are the best in the world. Times are tough for everyone......and I hope that soon things will start getting better.

I have so many favorite recipes, I could submit all 300, but I won't be greedy. I am still just overwhelmed and grateful that we can maybe make this happen. ETP, Mr. Play, Flip Flop Girl and all others "REALLY ROCK". Angel Beech, I remember how grateful you were for the help you received from FFF and BN folks.............I have always been the giver..........so it's really hard for me to ask or accept any kind of help, so please know that everything everyone is doing, every prayer that is said, every recipe that is submitted and, once finished - if any sell.........has given me the most wonderful feeling in the world.

I was told that many transplant recipients on fixed incomes are having to struggle and cannot afford their drugs, so they end up coming to the hospital and I guess their organ eventually rejects and they pass on..........seems like there should be another way..........And I know that if I am lucky enough to get a heart and I don't reject it, over time, the cost of the anti-rejection drugs decrease a bit, but not much.

Again, there are no words to express my appreciation and gratefulness! I know there are many people in the world with problems and needs and I always like to tell myself that there is always someone worse off than I am.

Hugs to each of you.

Well, tell me where, what needs to be done, and I am all over this. I'll even get my mom to throw in a couple of recipes, maybe my sister also. They are both Parrotheads (I even took them to the first concert).

This is such a great idea. I don't even know Vickster, but she sounds like a wonderful person with a generous heart and soul. I trust my friends here at BN as far as judges of character, so they have to be right.

Vicki? If you've ever read any of the posts in the Social area, you'll know that heart problems are near and dear to MY heart. :-? :) And I'm a big proponent of the Denver Heart Walk each year.

If you find the time and energy, we'd love to know more about you. :D ( I always wanted to be a caterer).

I'll be helping with this one too. :) I love our BN Cookbooks. :D
