Tar Balls in Paradise

Post by Bamaborn »

Can't say I blame Jimmy for the comments he made to the Media regarding the oil spill situation on the Gulf Coast. After all, he has a business to open, and he wouldn't want to lose a few bucks because people are afraid of a few little tar balls. Yep, right.. Our beautiful little piece of paradise is slowing but surely turning into a toxic dump, but that's nothing to get upset about. Wow, how out of touch Jimmy Buffett is to his "homeland".. We aren't allowed to fish in the Gulf, and we can't take our boats out because of the oil damage. The health department has told us not to swim in the water. The smell of oil is 40 miles inland, but we are all supposed to ignore it because Jimmy's got a Hotel to open, and everything is "business as usual".. Our hometown boy has sold us out. His commercialism, and the almighty dollar guide him, not the sails of a boat. Mr. Buffet you can take your cheeseburgers, and stick them where the sun don't shine! Or better yet, make another song, called "Tar Balls and Paradise"..

IMO, what Buffett said was dead on. It's only making things worse to suspend more than is necessary.

Yeah, the situation in the Gulf is terrible. But is there anything you, I, or Jimmy can do to stop the oil? Nope. Jimmy has even donated money already toward recovering wildlife. It's obvious he cares about the area, but there's no way anyone but those in charge will stop this spill, and does it do any good to stop normal operations that are otherwise unaffected?

There's no reason this should stop the hotel from opening. Really, that's just making things worse. Why shouldn't he open it? Do you think he wants the oil there?

I guess I don't follow the logic. There's no reason he shouldn't open it.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Sometimes you just have to make the best of a bad situation.

I think your anger is a little misplaced....blame those who are destroying the area, not those who are trying to ease the burden of those that live there. Telling the tourists to stay away is only going to worsen the economy. You already have sport fishermen, shrimpers and commercial fishermen out of work, why add all the hotels, restaurants and land based entertainment too???
You're entitled to your opinion, and I really appreciate you seeking us out, registering and lodging your complaint with your first post, but I still think you're wrong.

"We only have two options, having fun or freaking out, and that's what it's all about."

To say the situation is devasting and completely heartbreaking is an understatement. Some of us aren't affected at all, or at least don't feel that they are. (although I highly doubt that would be true of anyone visiting this website.) Some of us are saddened to see our favorite vacation spots under assault; saddened by the living things that won't survive; or saddened by knowing how adversely this can and will affect our friends, and many others who we don't know, who live in the path of destruction. And some of us are the people who live in the path of destruction.

I guess there are positive-minded people, and negative-minded people. The negative-minded people tend to point fingers, place blame, and find fault in almost every situation. The positive-minded people usually try to help, in any way that they can. They try to persevere and overcome the obstacles in their path. They try to roll with the punches, and make the best of whatever may come their way.

I sincerely believe that Jimmy Buffett's intentions are not to protect his investment from the oil spill. Rather, I sincerely believe that Jimmy's intentions are to try to help the coastal community from whence he came, and which will forever be near and dear to his heart.

What's the other option? Condemn and abandon the entire Gulf coast?

Survive... stay alive... try to find a way to get through this.

I have no problem with Jimmy opening up his new Hotel. Yes, it would be good for tourism, and it will be good for our local economy. My problem with Jimmy was how he came across in the Media. He told us not to "over react" basically. Kinda like, "so there's a few tar balls" after he walked, what maybe 50 yards or so on the beach. Where was Jimmy when Ivan and Katrina came in, and brought us to our knees.. Where was Jimmy? How many benefit concerts has had in our area to help with the rebuilding after two devastating hurricanes in a row? Did our hometown boy come here and survey the damage.. walk on the beach, and tell us all that he was here to help? No, he wasn't there, but he did buy the land that his new hotel is on, after the hotel that was there was destroyed by the hurricane. We, the people of the of his "homeland" need someone to speak out for us, We are tired of the US government pointing the finger at BP, and BP saying that they need help from the US government. In the meantime, our coastline is being destroyed, and thousands of gallons of oil are still coming out. Don't believe what you see on TV. There aren't booms out there protecting the beach. And the booms they have, aren't keeping the oil out. The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing, so no one has done anything to build barriers, and have a solid plan. (just like Katrina but in slow motion) Everyone is looking for a hand out, but noone is doing any work. What we needed was an Icon like Jimmy Buffett, who represents all the sailors, and fishermen, and boat captains, and shrimpers, and all the things he writes about in his songs to come to our aid, to be pro-active in this fight, and when he did come here and we expected to finally be heard, all he talked about was his Hotel. Like I said.. He sold out. He is a commercial Icon, not a real South Alabama raised Son of a Sailor.. Maybe he can take those tar balls on the beach, and wrap them up, and sell them in is gift shops.

Please do not say he was not there to help after Katrina, and imply that he doesn't care.

He was one of the headliners for the From the Big Apple to the Big Easy concert, which raised money with ticket sales, pay per view, and the concert DVD.
http://www.fromthebigappletothebigeasy.com/

He donated $75,000.00 to a library:
http://www.buffettnews.com/2007/08/06/6121/

He attended a Brangelina benefit in the Hamptons
http://www.buffettnews.com/2007/08/27/6106/

Margaritaville produced Fins Up charity bracelets: "By purchasing one of our “Fins Up” bracelets, all proceeds from the sale will go directly to charity. That money will be used to help fulfill the continuing needs of the people of the Gulf Coast during this difficult time."
http://www.buffettnews.com/2005/09/20/6869/

He auctioned off a signed Cubs jersey that he wore at Wrigley:
http://www.buffettnews.com/2005/09/08/6882/

"Buffett dedicated a sizeable portion of his (Wrigley) set to the victims of Hurricane Katrina"

"Mississippi native Jimmy Buffett paused after his first song Wednesday (in Indy) to dedicate the concert to family and friends on the Gulf Coast."
http://www.buffettnews.com/2005/09/01/6899/

And who knows what else that did not make headlines. Please be a little more fair, rather than accuse him of doing nothing.

Everyone in attendance at Wrigley could tell that he was torn up by what had happened.

13. Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On:

And, here comes Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On, your chance to, mention your dear friend Matt Betton.

Jimmy: Yeah, I mean Matt has always been another of those people, that has, I think Matt can write as good a Jimmy songs, or from knowing me, as I can. And he has definitely proved that in the past with If It All Falls Down, Apocalypso. And he sent me this.

And of course! After Katrina, I was deeply affected by that. I mean, I remember being on stage at Wrigley field while New Orleans was flooding. You know, and it’s still terrible down there. And then, we as a country, should just be god-damB-d ashamed of the way things are, are being handled down there. And I feel passionate about that.

But, that said! You gotta move on! And you know we do our best, and I think saving the cultural heartland of America is something that, that I’m gonna be involved with. And on a daily basis, I’m still working, because the world moves on, and, in a way, it should, but, things need to be still tended to so… Yeah, I was not gonna, not say something in an album about what happened down there, and for the people that still live there, I think, I hope that this song just says yeah, we gotta deal with it and move on. No matter how bad it is so…

That’s kinda the, a quiet gesture, and not an in your face kinda thing that I wanted to do on this song.

Um, no, that's not all he did. He is also underwriting the construction costs of the four boats estimated at about $35,000 apiece to aid in the the recovery of oil-covered wildlife along the marshes of the Gulf Coast.

That's it right there in a nutshell. Some people are gonna complain regardless of what is really going on around them.

If the only thing a person does is to take a vacation there and spend a few $$$ in the local economy they are at least helping with the recovery by spending money in the area that they could have spent at home. They are in fact probably helping more then those who just stand around and cry that nobody is helping them.

One of my friends said the name of the hotel down there could be changed to: "TARgaritaville". Funny....but kinda not. ?????
But I DO think that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing down there, seems like everybody from the government to BP to movie stars are running around yelling out their ideas but doing nothing. I say, everybody who has an idea: GET OUT THERE AND DO IT !!! Something's gotta work. Microbes to big sanitary napkins to tankers sucking it up. Just don't blow up the pipe.....I have a bad feeling about that. :o :x

i guess the question that could be raised here is: would jimmy be down there and making headlines if he wasnt opening up a hotel? for me based on his past practices in horrible situations such as this, i say yes.he did it for the victims of 9/11 and Katrina and he had no bussiness ventures associated with those tragedies. i think the timing of the oil spill, the opening of the hotel, and the media coverage might make jimmy look bad to some people because the hotel is being mentioned. the guy is helping out on this, and who's to say he's done?

Thanks, Tiki, Pair8head & Citcat for saying what I wanted to say.
I'll be the first to agree that this is horrific. We just discovered and fell in love with Anna Maria Island and can't believe what is happening, but I'm not quite following the rest. Just who named Jimmy Buffett the great savior of the southern coast? He's not responsible for it happening or for them not being able to stop it. You seem to be saying that it's more Jimmy's fault than BP's - he didn't drill the damn hole. The president can't stop it but you expect Jimmy to? I'm sure he didn't plan the opening of his hotel to coincide with this. If you're that pi**ed of with him stop listening to his music and go out and help the gulf instead.

This oil spill will be with us for a long time to come. Granted, this is a terrible thing to say the least that is happening. However, I do agree with Jimmy that the mess needs to be cleaned up, and life has to go on. I think the media is having a grand time concentrating on the problem and focusing on those people who want to point fingers and play the blame game and listen to the sounds of their lovely voices bitching to the media. Granted, those responsible for the oil spill need to be held accountable, and they need to clean up the mess and do right and people have every right in the world to be angry. However, instead of pointing the finger and playing the blame game, get your head out of your ass, get off your ass, and become part of the solution and get out there and do whatever you can to help. Good for Jimmy Buffett for doing what he can to help and for getting on with the business of living.

If you really are a fan, which I question, and if you are truly p*** off, stop listening to his music , quit wasting your time on an Internet fan site crying, and get out there and find some productive way to help.

The insinuation here seems to be that the only reason Buffett appeared on the beaches of Pensacola this weekend with the Governor was because Buffett is opening a hotel soon and wants people to stay in his hotel. How do you know what another person's motivations are? How do you know what another person is thinking and feeling? Buffett was in Pensacola, at least in part, because a job fair was being held at the hotel he's about to open. I actually think it's kind of nice he bothered to show up for the job fair. Why did he take a walk along the beach with the Governor? I have no idea. I have no access to the mind of Jimmy Buffett--to his motivations, thoughts, and feelings. Could it be that he cares about the state of Florida? He has said that he's "p*** off" about the oil spill. He's also underwriting the cost of the production of four low-draft boats that will be sent to the Gulf coast to assist with the recovery and cleanup of injured wildlife.

Bamaborn also wrote, "Our beautiful little piece of paradise is slowing but surely turning into a toxic dump." My recommendation would be to proofread your stuff before you post it. If you can't even spell "slowly," you really don't have much credibility.

I'm broken up about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A lot of people talk about how angry they are. For me, it's more like profound sadness. I too am a Gulf resident. I live in the state of Florida. The photographs of what the oil has done to the wetlands and wildlife of Louisiana I find almost impossible to look at. Everyday I am following the oil spill. I'm looking for ways to help. I've already done a few things. What surprises me is how divisive people have become during this human-made disaster. People need to stop attacking each other and work together to clean this mess up.

While I empathize with Bamaborn's feelings about the Gulf coast, I think Bamaborn's post was misguided.

Not really much to say on this topic except that Jimmy got into the hotel gig BEFORE the oil spill. Delaying the opening of the hotel would simply prevent some folks from getting a paycheck.

The hotel opening on time gets some people paid, and maybe even draws some tourists who wouldn't come otherwise. If Jimmy's going to encourage people to come to the gulf, spend their dollars and keep people employed... ALL GOOD. (and no, I'm not offended that JB gets a piece of the pie - it's HIS hotel!)

That all being said...

I and the family have reservations to be on the gulf coast (no, not at the M'ville hotel) over July 4, and we're KEEPING them. Maybe we'll get to play in the water, or maybe (like dear daughter said) we can help clean up a little. Either way, we'll be there.

If you want to gripe about Jimmy and what he does or doesn't do for the gulf coast, I'd suggest you come on down and put your money or sweat where your mouth is.

Just my 2 cents.

Doubt you would be allowed to help clean up but just going there and spending a bit of tourist dollars is going to be a lot of help. Hope you all have as much fun as the law allows. :D [smilie=gt-happyup.gif]

Seems to me that Jimmy is the ONLY celebrity that's done anything, so far, for the Gulf Coast.
While everyone was rushing to Haiti, and other global disasters, the celebrity contingent is amazingly quiet in the face of this disaster right here in the US.
Shameful.
It's sad that Jimmy's being made fun of for financing boat builders and contributing to the gulf coast economy.
And I doubt that he's done yet.
Some people never find it, some only pretend
But me, I just want to live happily ever after every now and then.

There are others.
Kevin Costner cleans the water of the world.

Recently actor Kevin Costner has been helping out with the BP oil spill. Interestingly enough this actor, who played the lead role in the movie Water World, has been contributing funds to develop a centrifuge water cleaning system. The hope is that this can be used to separate oil from water. Ocean Therapy Solutions has already created several models, but they have yet to make one that is 100% effective at removing oil from water. Kevin Costner as already helped with the BP oil spill as six of the centrifuge machines are currently being tested and used by BP in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
I had read an article about his investment in this. Seems he has invested near 45 million and 15 years in this.
