Final Words
MSN ran a morbidly interesting slide show today on the last words reportedly uttered by a number of famous people. I pulled a few of them out but you can view all of the rest of them at:
http://specials.msn.com/A-List/Famous-l ... >1=36010
George Washington (12/14/1799)
Historians disagree on these
* "It is well, I die hard, but I am not afraid to go."
* "I am just going. Have me decently buried; and don't let my body be put into the vault in less than three days after I am dead. Do you understand?
* "'Tis well, 'Tis well."
John F. Kennedy (11/22/1963)
"If someone is going to kill me, they will kill me," (on arriving in Dallas in 1963).
Elvis (8/16/1977)
"I hope I haven't bored you," (ending his last press conference).
Other reports say his last words were: "Okay, I won't" (last words spoken to Ginger Alden, who told him on the way to the bathroom not to "fall asleep in there.")
James Dean (9/30/1955)
"That guy's got to stop ... he'll see us."
Frank Sinatra (5/14/1998)
"I'm losing." Other sources say, "I'm losing it." (according to Nancy Sinatra)
Edgar Allen Poe (10/7/1849)
"Lord, help my poor soul."
John Lennon (12/8/1980)
"Yes, I am," (while sitting in a police car on the way to a hospital, after officers asked him if he were John Lennon)
Bob Marley (5/11/1981)
"Money can't buy life." (to oldest son Ziggy Marley)
Bobby Kennedy (6/5/1968)
"Is everyone else all right?" (whispered to his wife).
Babe Ruth (8/16/1948)
"I'm going over the valley."
Al Capone (1/25/1947)
"You can get more with a kind word and a gun than you can get with a kind word alone."

Yes - I've seen that attributed to "notable redneck quotes". I have also seen than credited to New Yorkers on the Garden State Parkway so it just might be a widely used phrase

Can't forget the immortal words of Socrates who said "I drank what?". At least that's what Chris Knight from Real Genius seems to think he said.

Re: Final Words
"oops"
I actually know someone whose father uttered that as his last word. He was on the roof of a 2 story house and took one step too far. Her brother heard "oops" turned around and dad wasn't there. Unfortunately the fall killed dad.

Re: Final Words
Shortly after Custer's Last Stand, Pres. Grant commissioned a famous artist to create a painting depicting the battle. The artist demanded that he be able to work in secrecy and not allow anyone to see the painting until it was completed. He worked for many weeks, making sure every detail was accurate. A public unveiling was planned for when the painting was finally complete.pair8head wrote:I thought his last words were, "Where did all these Indians come from?"green1 wrote:"There aren't enough Indians in the world that can defeat the 7th Cavalry."
- George Armstrong Custer
On the appointed day, Pres. Grant, and many other high ranking government officials, anxiously awaited the unveiling. Finally, the arist revealed his work to the assembled crowd. It consisted of Custer's army surrounded by cattle with halos and many, many Indians having sex. The President was outraged, the crowd was horrified. How could something like this be an accurate depiction of Custer's Last Stand? The artist explained his motivation. "The painting shows what was possibly one of Gen. Custer's final thoughts on that fateful day. "Holy cow!!! Look at all those f**king Indians.""

Re: Final Words
With the invention of the "minie ball" in the late 1840's and it's heavy use in the Civil War - muzzleloading rifles could be shot accurately over many hundreds of yards. Kills were reported by Civil War snipers at a 1,000...even 1,200 yards. I believe Union General John Reynolds (native of my home town of Lancaster PA) was shot early on at Getteysburg in a similar manner.Bicycle Bill wrote:"They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." — Major General John Sedgwick, USA, at the Battle of Spotsylvania (1864).
