The plane they show taking off is a 747-800, but the plane at the 1:48 mark and the plane in the closing frames is a 787.

Won't be long now, KK! United is getting "their" first dreamliner in about 2 months...

Here's some pretty cool infrared video of the QATAR Airways 787 that'll be flying at the Farnborough Airshow this week

United Airlines has shown off a special livery that will be seen on their Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The swooping gold-line livery is inspired by the Dreamliner livery that Boeing designed and is United’s way of celebrating the two company’s long history together. The special livery will be seen on the entire United 787 fleet.

FINALLY! :-?

Boeing to roll out United's painted 787 on Tuesday
United's Boeing 787 will roll out of the paint hangar in Everett on Tuesday.
Michelle Dunlop, Herald Writer
Monday, July 30, 2012 | 11:00 am

United Airlines plans to webcast the rollout of its newly painted Boeing Co. 787 on Tuesday. The airline's new Dreamliner will roll out of the Everett paint hangar at 5:30 a.m. Pacific time.

United's 787 is painted with a gold line “wraps the fuselage and swoops from nose to tail. The swoop is inspired by the trademark swoop painted on each of Boeing's aircraft and is being adopted for the United 787 in a tribute to the two companies' long history of working together,” the carrier said in a press release.

Boeing will hand over United's first Dreamliner to the airline in September. The airline is one of several set to take initial Dreamliner deliveries over the upcoming months.

FINALLY!

United Receives First 787 Dreamliner
Boeing delivered the first of 50 787 Dreamliners on order to United Airlines Monday, making United the first North American carrier to take delivery of the 787.

The Houston-based airline will begin a month-long training and certification program with the 787 later this week, according to Boeing.

United has not announced when it expects the 787 to enter into commercial service.

"This 787 delivery represents the continuation in the more than 80-year partnership between our two companies," said Ray Conner, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "United now begins a new chapter with the 787 Dreamliner, the most technologically advanced commercial jetliner ever built. It reinforces United's commitment to be the world's leading airline by providing unmatched fuel efficiency and passenger comfort."

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The first Boeing 787 manufactured in South Carolina is flying into service.

The plane that was formally delivered to Air India in a ceremony last week flew out of the Charleston International Airport on Monday.

The plane is the first assembled at the Boeing assembly plant in North Charleston that opened more than a year ago. The plane, the 28th 787 manufactured by Boeing, made its maiden test flight over the Atlantic Ocean last spring.

Boeing plans to produce about three planes a month at its $750 million South Carolina plant by the end of next year. The 787 is made partly from composite materials, including carbon fiber-reinforced plastic.

United’s first Dreamliner travels from Houston to Chicago

CHICAGO—United Airlines’ inaugural flight of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner has touched down at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

United is the first U.S. airline to get Boeing’s newest plane. United CEO Jeff Smisek was on Sunday’s flight from Houston to Chicago and called the 787 the “world’s leading airplane.”

The Chicago Tribune reports that the landing was greeted by cheers from passengers, including some aviation enthusiasts who said they wanted to be part of a historic event.

It was a long time coming, as Boeing recently started delivering the jets after more than three years of delays.

More than 800 have been sold to airlines around the world, which Boeing has said will be more fuel efficient than comparable jets and more comfortable for passengers.

I don't seem to remember anywhere near this much whoop-de-do when they introduced the 777, or going back, even the 747.  I know the 787 is a magnificent airplane, but is it really this much of a game changer?  Or is it because we now have the internet we just seem to be hearing more than we would have back when the 747 was introduced, when most news of this sort would have been only in trade papers and magazines like 'FLYING', 'Aviation Week and Space Technology', or 'Popular Science'?

Not trying to start anything, merely curious.

I think it's probably more the age we live in, with all the forums and blogs and such. Game changer? Maybe, but probably only until the next new plane comes along. Because of its composite fuselage, the humidity and atmospheric pressure levels inside can be kept higher, making long haul flights more comfortable (less jet lag.) Because of all the composites used in its construction, it’s lighter and has better “fuel mileage.” Launch customer ANA now has 16 787s in their fleet and has flown 1.8 million passengers on ~9,000 flights in the past year; they are experiencing a 21% fuel savings over older planes. ANA 787's dispatch reliability is 99.8%... really good for a new plane. Better flight economics will hopefully mean better ticket prices.

Being a Seattle kid, I’ve always been interested in what was flying overhead… I was still a teenager when the 747 was launched… there was nothing like it; it was so big that a lot of people didn't think it would ever get off the ground. Twenty five years later, the 777 was notable because it was the first "digital" plane, designed on computers instead of drawing boards. It was also the first twin-engine wide body… it's still the largest twin flying. Between the digital design and the use of digital Avionics, the triple 7 was a big deal. Both the 747 and the 777 created a buzz, just not the electronic buzz we have available at our fingertips today.

Silly question but —
these aircraft are now in revenue service for several airlines.  Now I don't mean to be a Gloomy Gus, but it's only going to be a matter of time (hopefully a very l-o-n-g time) before one of these birds is involved in an incident.  Just how fire retardant is all this composite material?  I've seen a carbon-fiber bicycle that had been in a garage fire, and if it weren't for the chain and the derailleurs lying in the ashes you would have never known it had been there in the first place.

FAA has grounded them all until a battery issue is taken care of. Hope they figure out the fix and get them back in the air.
