Alabama Shakes

I had heard rumblings about this band then I saw them on the Grammeys and again on Saturday night live last night. Phenomenal. Kind of like Janis Joplin and Tina Turner got together.

Agreed. But that chick's mouth makes Mick Jagger's mouth look like a dwarf.

A little over a year ago they were hardly known outside of Athens, Alabama. Shortly thereafter, thanks to being featured on the Aquarium Drunkard blog they started to receive some recognition, most notably from Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers. The Truckers took them out on the road with them not long after that (as did the North Mississippi Allstars) which brought them to an even wider audience. By this time last year they were nearly ready to release their first full length album (Boys and Girls) and had gone from opening shows to selling out concerts as headliners, even in England. Their popularity has continued to snowball from there by playing nearly every festival known to man including some very high profile ones such as Bonnaroo and the Austin City Limits Music Festival. I'm sure this Saturday Night Live appearance will only help to increase their popularity. There have already been attempts to lure Brittany Howard away from the Alabama Shakes, including an offer to make her a judge on X Factor but she turned it down.

I saw them in Nashville at a festival in September. They were phenomenal. I've really enjoyed their album.
I knew this girl made of memories and phrases, who lived her whole life in both chapters and stages.
Danced 'til the dawn, wished all her worries away.

She's a long way from a West Nashville grand ballroom gown.

Well I hate that show too. I am both equal opportunity and all encompassing with my ability to apply my hatred.

Another unpopular opinion I'm sure but I've never really cared for any of those kinds of shows. However, I absolutely loved The Gong Show back in the 70's.

The Gong show was very original and great in its ability to laugh @ itself and its fundamental cheesiness.

I'm pretty sure this is the blog post from Aquarium Drunkard that initially got the ball rolling for the Alabama Shakes. This was back when they were still known as "The Shakes". Not only is Aquarium Drunkard a great blog and a wonderful place to discover new music (such as the Alabama Shakes) but Justin Gage (who runs the blog) also hosts the Aquarium Drunkard show on SiriusXM's XMU channel (Fridays from noon-2pm).
