Again, I agree it can be used as a tool. However, I can wait till print or the PBS News Hour spends time on assembling the information. Unless you have family on the ship, is it important to know as it happens? Can it wait till research is done? Most information is just there to fill the short attention span. Goes in, then out. Assembly line.

And I love dawgfan's morning kick offs to start the day. Another female TV reporter tweets what she is covering before (fires, accidents) she even tapes the report. Then she tweets about her mom visiting and what games she's watching on the weekend. You just get inside people's lives a little bit at a time.

I understand. I have trouble getting inside my own life, nevermind some make believe journalist's. I do find it disturbing a reporter is sending information without taking the time to edit or even fact check

Sorry if I am pushing Twitter so much... It is just such a cool new phenom... phenononu...phenomenum -- thingy -- and it is weird that my hubby and I joined it separately on the same day without discussing it with each other ....

I understand. I won't criticize you as an individual for doing it. We make our own choice on how to use the tools available to obtain information.

Two questions.

1 Why the need to know as it happens? I guess I can see someone on the west typing out "...a mushroom cloud is heading east". That could be useful. Which brings me to.....

2 How accurate is "as it happens"? For example, who is the source? I don't see how on the spot twitting can be informative for 95 percent of the crap that happens on this planet. I would rather have the time to do research before transmitting off the cuff news.

I know you don't have to follow useless banter on Twitt. I'm just talking about the very brief thought process, if any, that goes into sending information out. Well, that can happen with any type of communication.

celebrities in the news I could care less about. their personal lives are boring and inconsequential to my life.

but, that's just me. I found the doggie cam much more entertaining than knowing what any celebrity, including Mr. Buffett, is doing at the exact present time.

for those that do have an appetite for such, I'm glad you have twitter.

I get plenty of hard news on the news channels that run 24/7....

it's not important that I get the news as it happens...got enough of that 4/19/95 and 9/11/01.

Twitter will never replace the fanatical monitoring of internet forums and commenting with on every single bit of minutia posted ...... because THAT, my friends, is what is truly important and what makes the internet (a series of tubes according to one former Alaskan politician) go round.

and sometimes if I do start on Pg, 1 or read back pages, I certainly won't retain all that I read.

I finally caved...

I am a Twit. I don't post yet, but I follow Bubba, Daniel Negreanu and Howard Stern.

Daniel Negreanu is a poker player for those who don't know and he's been in a tournament the past few days and has been tweeting updates every so often.

With Jimmy's crew..."hot night tonight, ready to go on stage", not as exciting.

Stern's show is so-so, I like updates on what's coming up next, but they are not frequent enough.

We'll see how it goes.

My opinion is that people have become far too dependent upon electronic technology. It is well known that if our Sun has a violent activity event, it will cause catastrophic failure in satellites and communications (among other things) so what will people actually do, that depend and rely on such tech?

Not to mention such effects will have on everyone else and industry.
Can you say goodbye cell phones and GPS for examples?

Example: There are newspapers going out of the "hard print" business. They cannot economically compete with "online" news. It seems people have given up on reading hard copy data. THAT is what I mean.

If you or anyone else, want to settle for twitter or whatever the latest greatest electronic thingie delivering all the latest celebrity gossip,news, or whatever, and monitoring everyday minutae of people's lives and follow them around, go for it. I am quite sure if the goverment were providing such access to people's lives, many people would be raising holyhell and calling it an invasion of privacy. Yet people are volunteering and want to do it? Ok let them. Leave me out of it

I have no real interest in celebrities or others private lives or keeping up with them and following them around. Private lives are just that, private. I am not impressed with it and want nothing to do with it. Keep your 140 or whatever character news bytes.

Why should I or anyone else spend time posting such data, and allowing people, we do not really know, to have access to it? Meanwhile what else is happening in the real world around us and what are people doing with their lives in the real world?

Think your info is safe? You better guess again. Humans created it and somewhere out there are humans that can defeat it.
