Umm - not to sound like a know-it-all, but to "succumb" to an illness means to die from it. I realize that several tourists have indeed died of a mystery illness in the DR over the past few weeks, but the article in the link you have provided only refers to members of this group of vacationing Parrotheads becoming ill, with no fatalities involved - thankfully!
