TD Retires

I for one believe Terrell Davis belongs in the PFHOF! I have already heard the complaint that he didn't play long enough. So lets compair TD with some running backs already enshrined. TD ran for 7,607 yards on 1,655 carries and scored 60 TD's (21 in the postseason)...not to mention the Super Bowl MVP and a couple of impressive rings. The last player to gain 2,000+ yards in a season (2,008 in 1998) had the third most prolific season in NFL history. He logged 40 100+ yard rushing games (7 in post season).
So TD played only seven seasons...the last three very sparingly. Compair to Gayle Sayers, who played only seven season (1965-71), whose best year was 1,231 yards. Sayers recorded 4,956 yards rushing and scored 39 touchdows, add in 9 more receiving. Then there are HOF'er such as Doak Walker,1,520 rushing yards 12 TD's and 21 receiving, who played only six years (1950-55), Cliff Battles (1931-37...3,511 yards 23 TD's - 4 receiving ) only seven years and Earl "Dutch" Clark (1931-38...2,772 yards 36 TD's 6 receiving) only eight years. Granted Sayers returned punts and kicks, walker was the first true back that was a receiving threat and battles and clark played in a time of a less sufisticated offense. The bottom line is.... Davis belongs!

Most excellent poll Glenn!!!

TD was one of the reasons I got "into" football when I moved to Colorado...I was one of those woman that always said "it's just a game" and would find something else to do on a Sunday afternoon or Monday Night - now you can't pry me away from Footbal!!

TD's was the first jersey I ever got and I intend to still wear it proudly!!!

Duh..."He didn't play long enough"...either did Jim Brown or Gale Sayers...yes, he belongs and the quality of the man as well as the football player will be missed...

Although I'm a JETS fan, I loved watching TD. He was just fabulous, and he helped get Elway his rings. I just don't think that he was great for a long enough period of time. I have to lean towards no on the Hall of Fame.

On the other hand, the NFL has recently let a bunch of people in that don't belong in the Hall. Based on that, I think he will wind up getting in.

Just a little more to read on such a fabulous man. He said he wasn't "a football player".. he was a guy who played football.

Altho I'm a Pats fan I always respected Terrell Davis especially when Elway was receiving all the accolades. A great player, a class act, and yes he belongs in Canton.

Sorry guys, no way. He was great when he played...But he didn't play long enough. And, sorry, he's no Gale Sayers. A really good player in his time, yep. A hall of famer, nope.

Sorry, TD had a few good years but a HOFer he is not! For that matter it isn't even close. He was in the NFL 7 seasons played and was a factor in really only 4 of the 7, he is the Roger Marris of Football, a guy who dominated his sport for a couple of years and broke some records. With all things considered (Stats, Playing time...) I probally wouldn't have him in my top 10 RB's of the 1990's either and if he was he would be closer to 10 than 1. He had a 2-3 good years where he was the best at his position, the best anology I can make is from the NHL Cam Neely, a great player who was all class, the best and most feared player at his position but he to had injuries that ended his career way to soon. Cam isn't in the Hall YET and I doubt TD ever will. If there was a Hall of Class then he would be a shoe-in!

As far as the comparing him to Gayle Sayers that is tough because at the time Gayle Sayers played he was such a unique dominating player that the NFL had never seen before, he changed the way the game was played and coached. TD was Eric Dickerson with a better team and O-line, TD was great when healthy, he just wasn't healthy long enough!

I vote no on T.D. You can't compare the stats of today vs. those of yesterday. T.D. was on his way to becoming Hall of Fame material but unfortunately for him and the Broncos the bug (injury) bit him.

Jim Brown played 9 years and retired at the top of his game. I don't care how many guys pass him in the all-time rushing statistics, he's the greatest running back ever to play the game.

He belongs in the Football Hall of Fame more than Pete Rose belongs in the Baseball Hall of Fame............. 8) 8)

He played long enough. In the NFL there is no minimum, due to frequency of injuries. I would question if he played at HOF level long enough, however.

Now if we can just relay that to ALL the HOFs many fans will be way
happy.

It really depends on the previous standard that the HOF (or the HOF in any sport) has set. Is it there for the GREATEST players, or just VERY GOOD players.

Remember, every week there are nearly 1700 players in the NFL. Every year, FOUR go into the HOF.
