(1) I don't like the title because I think takes away from "Meet me in Memphis" which is a great song on an even better album.
(2) Unless all of the songs are re-worked, I will not buy the CD. If there are two new songs but everything else is the same, I will just borrow it from a friend and make a copy.
(3) If it was offered by Mailboat, I'd buy it no matter what.

Hi, YNONINO!
I was sitting next to you in Orlando! You guys were a lot of fun. I'll send you or post the pictures soon.
I like "Buffett Buffet" better. Maybe some people would finally realize that his name has two t's. Most PH's will buy it no matter what, but for the public at large it is probably better marketing to go with something having "Margaritaville" in the title. They may stop and look and BUY if they can connect the album with something they already know.
Hey, Matt - I like your enthusiasm! I can't wait for the album, whatever it's called. I'm sure everyone here feels the same, but I like how you expressed it!

Generally speaking, a label CANNOT own the rights to a song - they can only own the rights to the RECORDED version that Jimmy did when he was signed to MCA (otherwise known as the MASTER RECORDING). Jimmy can rerecord the song and there's nothing MCA can do about it, but he cannot re-release, say, the version of Margaritaville he recorded back in the 70s. In theory MCA paid for that version (even though JB had to pay them back out of his royalties) and therefore own it.YNONIN0 wrote:Jimmy said in a pre-concert interview that this one would not be on Mailboat because MCA owns the rights to many of the songs that will appear on the CD. So it's definitely not on mailboat. Mville.com had Buffett Buffet posted before, but then they pulled it. Maybe it was renamed...in a drunken stupor...
The rights to the song remain with the writer (JB) and the publisher (sometimes the writer, sometimes another company). Interestingly enough, however, once a song has been commercially recorded and released ANYONE can rerecord it and release it on an album, provided they 1) pay a standardized mechanical royalty for each CD they press and 2) all the royalties go to the writer and publisher. *I* could rearrange and rerecord Margaritaville and there's nothing JB could do about it.
As far as the title... it's a song he played early in a few shows on last year's tour....

Title means nothing to me. I just hope it contains many of his classics. I will buy it no matter what. I will play it no matter what. I will lovbe it no matter what. I would prefer it not have any songs from SYKBH. Guess I'm old, I remember the idea of "Best of The Ballads" floating around a while back. How about an album like "Bubba's Ballads"
Again, I like all Jimmy's music, but I must admit cds like A1A, WSCPC, Barometer Soup. CILCIA, HD, etc are in my truck player more than any others (I'm sure I left some off, but you get the idea...)

To me I really don't care what the album is called, although I prefer Buffett Buffet. The problem I have is that instead of taking the band to Key West to record a brand new album with new orginal songs, Jimmy in my opinion, is wasting time working in a studio on rehashing old songs. If you want to change up old songs, thats fine to me, and I do believe reworking some of the real early 70's stuff is a good idea, just based on sound quality alone. Not to mention this version of the Coral Reefer Band is much better. I just feel that reworking songs should be for live concerts and live releases only. I'd much rather have seen Jimmy and the band down in Key West recording brand new material for a spring release date. And come on already, the proposed "new songs" are once again covers of somebody else's material. So now in concert we will here even less Jimmy Buffett songs and more songs from other artists. I'm sorry guys but you can go to a club to see bands do other peoples songs. This does not have a postive effect on the setlist in any way what soever. So now we'll here Sail on Sailor, Brown Eyed Girl, Southern Cross, Everybody's Talkin', Mexico, etc. Not that there bad songs, but I came to see Jimmy Buffett play his own songs, most of which are never played! At least he could have released something like the Rolling Stones 40 licks, which includes all the classics spanning every year of their career, plus 4 brand new written and performed by the Rolling Stones songs! Which is great for occasional and diehard fans alike!

Meet Me In Margaritaville
It's taken MCA this long to get around to releasing a follow up to SYKBH? I always thought they'd do the logical thing and start with Coconut Telegraph through Off To See The Lizard (based on the fact that SYKBH is all 1970s tracks). And do a third one of the 1990s, starting with Another Saturday Night through Christmas Island.
I wonder what kind of caca MCA gave Jimmy over recording old tracks again - since that legally creates a new copyright for a performance - it's a different version, hence why those tunes can be released on a live album like Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays. The publishing stays the same. I'm guessing that this new double LP greatest hits does not contain new versions of tunes - Jimmy has said for a while that MCA was planning on something. Maybe this is it. And if you think about it, they remastered a lot for the box set but never remastered all the albums, repackaged them and rereleased them. That would be a killing there. No, today you can still buy the records for way too much money with no liner notes or pictures in the packaging. MCA is a total rip off. Let there be a proper follow up to Far Side Of The World, whether it's called Buffett Buffet or Hemisphere Dancing or whatever. I've made up my own 1970-2002 greatest hits album, inspired by Forty Licks, called Forty Bottles Of Beer In The Boat (email me if you'd like to see my song selection), and it contains 40 essential Buffett tracks spanning his entire 25 studio albums (where this over 30 albums released stuff comes from I don't know - compilations and live albums don't actually count as a proper album - which would make the count 37 - the three live albums - one a double, which counts as two, SYKBH, the BBB&B comp, all four BBB&B albums and Before The Salt and Before The Beach). Calaloo isn't an album. And all those "import" hits comps. Forget it. Let's hope for a new studio album.

BBB&B was on MCA because most of those recordings were owned by MCA. If Jimmy wants to release the studio version of Margaritaville, he has to do it through MCA who owns the master recording.PA PAR8 HED wrote:Any chance that MCA is looking to capitalize on the popularity and releasing something on their own?
I can't imagine Jimmy would willingly go back to MCA and not use mailboat, especially if he is rerecording songs and adding new ones.
How many post BBB&B releases were on MCA?
Several of the post BBB&B were on Margaritaville, which was just an imprint of Island records before Jimmy finally started mailboat.
Jimmy would have NO obligation to do ANYTHING new for MCA - he's not under contract with them - but nor could he stop them from throwing together a CD of any of the tunes he recorded while he WAS there.
In some cases, artists can buy back their master recordings, but with a catalog like Jimmy's, it's unlikely that MCA would sell.

They can't give him any caca... MCA only owns the sound recordings Jimmy made back when he recorded for them - they have NO rights on the song itself, just the VERSION that was recorded while Jimmy was under contract....
And do we know it's an MCA release? Maybe the original poster could post a LINK to the source...

Margaritaville Records
Margaritaville/MCA's first release was Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads - the box set as well as the comp album. Then Before The Beach, Fruitcakes, Barometer Soup, Banana Wind and the last one, Christmas Island, which finished the MCA contract. Margaritaville/Island was only for Don't Stop The Carnival and Beach House On The Moon.

I just reread the press release... would edit my post but I can't right now...
the press release says it IS an MCA release... which means Jimmy has no say, either in the title or in the release or song selections.
If anything, I bet JB is p***... it steps on his project. My sense is that Jimmy WAS set to release Buffett Buffet but now MCA is coming out with Meet Me In Margaritaville....
Again, if it's MCA, jimmy has no rights to say ANYTHING. He didn't pick the title...
