How the heck can they have re-recorded the older stuff without Fingers? Fingers plays an integral part in most of the earlier stuff. What, are they just going to keep his part the same and change everything else in the background?
They rerecorded from scratch. Take the instruments that are there and write a new arrangement for the song. Sort of like if a classical quartet did a JB song, except it's the new Coral Reefer Band.

And Fingers is only integral because you're USED to hearing him there. Really, he's just playing a secondary melody that could be covered by something else - pedal steel, for example.

Is this a race to see who can get the release out first?
There is no mention of a Buffett release on the Buffett section of the MCA website - that ends with BHOTM.
So the source of this info comes from the MGM Grand's press release about their concert. Maybe they simply screwed up (big screw up though)!

Clearly, Jimmy has been working in the studio and has been reworking some old songs and covering some others. There is no way they'll be out on MCA.

If there is an MCA release it could only be a greatest hits package as originally released. I'd guess it would pull heavily from Fruitcakes, Barometer Soup, Banana Wind and BHOTM all of which were released after the BBB&B compilation. I hope a potential MCA release would not change Jimmy's plans for what he has in the works.

Here is a question...who owns the rights to songs recorded under an MCA contract, but never released? I'm thinking of PTYD15YOGH. It's sitting in a vault somewhere. Who owns it?

Now I'm intrigued...Is this MCA stepping on Bubba's toes with the new release? Or is this "Buffett Buffet"? I don't believe it was going to be called that anyway, didn't M'ville say it was untitled?

MCA would own the rights to all recordings while JB was under contract, whether they were released or not. Theoretically, MCA paid for the recordings (although the costs are "recoupable" by the label, the ownership doesn't change once they are recouped).

JB would still own the SONG and could rerecord it anytime, but he couldn't release the original recordings.

Just one thought though----Doesnt Jimmy have some sort of Copyright on the word Margaritaville?

You can't copyright a word... he can TRADEMARK it... but in this case, it wouldn't apply.

YNONIN0 wrote:Jimmy said in a pre-concert interview that this one would not be on Mailboat because MCA owns the rights to many of the songs that will appear on the CD. So it's definitely not on mailboat. Mville.com had Buffett Buffet posted before, but then they pulled it. Maybe it was renamed...in a drunken stupor...
REMEMBER, many albums (books, too) have working names and once finalized are given the name they will be marketed with. :pirate:

I emailed the PR contact on the MGM press release and here is the response I got from someone at umusic.com (Universal Music Group):

Thanks for writing to us for more information on the new UTV Jimmy Buffett release!

It will be in stores on April 15th and the full title is "Meet Me In
Margaritaville: Jimmy Buffett, The Ultimate Collection"

Below is some information that was provided by the label.

New versions of classic tracks:
IN THE SHELTER
SON OF A SON OF A SAILOR
SAXOPHONES
HE WENT TO PARIS
KNEES
CAPTAIN AND THE KIDD

Brand new songs:
EVERYBODY'S TALKIN
SAIL ON SAILOR

New live recordings:
DESPERATION SAMBA
A PIRATE LOOKS AT 40
HOLIDAY
PASCOUGLA RUN

If you take this at it's word, and I don't know why you wouldn't, this seems to be the one and only - as bizzare as it sounds.

I post this for what it is worth (roughly 2 cents!)

Really odd...

If that's true, why would JB release on MCA?

"Odd" to say the least!

And Jimmy seems to be behind it.

Never thought I'd look forward to tax day this much!

I really don't give a flying shampoo bottle what the new album is called. It's Jimmy's work,it's on MCA....big deal....it's still probably the same songs and tracks that Jimmy was going to release if he was planning to release it on mailboat (or any other record company that exists).I really like Russ Titelman's work as a producer as I am also an Eric Clapton fan.I have no clue who is producing it.I wonder what Jimmy would say.Who knows....as for the title, the producer, the record company, the type of diesel fuel the 18 Wheelers use to transport the albums I don't think anyone should care....all we gotta do is worry about the due date and as soon as it comes out BUY IT!!!! It's still JB and it always will be. :D sweet dreams ya'll.i'm headin' to the LNC. 8)

About the MGM press release:
There's only enough songs there for one cd.
hmmmmm?

I've been burning cds for friends now for 2 years and calling them "Buffett's Buffet".
Jimmy must have got the idea from me.....yeah right!!!
I think that "Jimmy's Buffet" would be cool too although I don't really care what it's called.

Hey, Matt - I like your enthusiasm! I can't wait for the album, whatever it's called. I'm sure everyone here feels the same, but I like how you expressed it!
Thanks! :D Looking at the songs that MCA emailed our very kind Guest, I cant wait to get my little paws on it! But it has been almost confirmed/expected that it will be a 2 disc set. As of now we only no what is to be on the first CD. I guess, only time will tell!!! :D

They can name it Sh*T Sandwiches for Everyone and i'm still gonna buy it 'cause if Jimmy puts it out you can count on it bein' good. All of Jimmy's music is quite pleasing to the mental palate for me. Ready for Nashville - we'll be poised at the Ticketbastard site at 10:00 AM. Phins Up!

It's not about the music anymore. :( For Jimmy Buffett, it's all about Krispy Kreme and Money.

This whole discussion has made me want to go listen to Tom Petty's newest "The Last DJ". Highly recommended, by the way.
Anyway - I'm just glad I'll be able to buy it the day before I road trip to Atlanta. Needed something new to pass the 10 hours on I-75 Northbound...
